The only downside is Onyewu will be managed by the guy who cracked Tab Ramos's skull in 94. Does Leonardo even have any coaching experience?

Good one, maybe Lando can convince Gooch to give Beckham a training... "accident" injury.

    no, that would be terrible....

Belgian media reporting this as well now, looks like a done deal.

Congratulations to Gooch on a well-deserved pay-day, couldn't happen to a nicer guy.

    None.

He doesn't even have the coaching license yet that is required to be a manager in the Serie A, but they made an exception for him because he won the World Cup as a player.

Well played, Mr. Gooch's agent. You earned that commission.

You too Mr. Gooch, nicely done in South Africa.

Good for Gooch. Hope he is able to take advantage of a great opportunity and secure some serious minutes week in and week out.

Not happy. Not happy at all. And its a f***in' brilliant move.

I hate everything. I wish it would rain fire on San Siro. I could punch a baby unicorn in the eye.

No, not even the slightest bit happy.

Senderos and the geriatric Nesta should prove an easier challenge than the kind of rivals he'd have found at Real. ;)

It's ok. Just remember the days of JOB.

Ok, maybe that's not a good idea. He was injured most of the time. Retired at 29.

Let's think about the renovation that has been Rick Ankiel's career.

    Damn, another bad one there.

How about this: Mark McGwire swatting homerums left and right at Busch II???

    Still no good?

Then we can agree on this: 82 Cards... Whitey ball... Willie, Ozzie, Porter, etc...

I would like to give a shout out to Newcastle United for treating Gooch as a scapegoat. Had you not done that he may have wound up staying with your club. And had that happened, he would be playing Championship football this year rather than Champion's League football.

    Many thanks.

But seriously, it's a great move for everyone involved. To be honest, Milan should have spent the money to do this last year.

Now, please just let me be angry.

Great News, as a USMNT supporter I don't know how to take this. On one hand I'm ecstatic about him going to a big club, but on the other hand what does this mean as for his playing time. He got regular playing time at Standard Lèige, I don't think we want Gooch riding bench with the world cup coming up.

talk about the slow play....This guy has spent more time looking for a new team then anyone i can think of and it paid off. I'm glad they didn't settle.

also assuming he starts with performance bonuses, does anyone think he will be the highest paid (gross) player in US history (excluding Rossi ;)????

I wonder what his deal with Gladbach would have been compared to AC, lol?

Again, I don't think Gooch and his agent would have selected AC Milan if they didn't have assurances that he will start or be given every chance to start. They know, like you, how important playing regular minutes will be for Gooch building up to WC2010.

Senderos was only there on loan from Arsenal. I expect that Thiago Silva will start the season as top choice, and the second spot in the central defense will be a competition between Gooch, Bonera, Nesta, and Kaladze. I'd say that if Nesta stays first choice, he'll be rested often, and some rotation would occur. Bonera hasn't been any good last year and Oddo was awful at Bayern. Kaladze can certainly give Gooch stiff competition for a starting spot, but in his current form, Gooch should see playing time at least in Coppa Italia matches and in some Serie A games as well as late group stage CL games if they're dead rubbers. Of course, despite all the confidence Milan has shown in Silva, he has yet to play one competitive minute for the club, and could prove to be a flop as well.

Considering the shambles that Milan's defense was in at the end of the last season, Gooch will at the very least be give the chance to prove himself at Milan in the early season. If he fails to cement a place in the first team or in a rotating defensive pairing, it won't be because of a lack of opportunities.

As a Milanista and an American, my footballing worlds have splendidly collided and I can't wait to see this work out, yet remain fearful that it may not.

His competition for CB: former LB Kaladze, the geriatric Nesta and Senderos. I think Gooch should be able to steal one of the starting spots, don't you?
