To be fair, we don't know what instructions Bob gave to Boca. It seemed that in the Spain game, both he and Spector pushed inwards in an attempt to clog up the middle, and inviting crosses which were easily headed out by our towering CBs.

That's a good point. We always forget Spector can play LB too...and DM. I think the only defensive position he can't (or hasn't) played is 'keeper.

Bocanegra is a better defensive LB than Castillo by far

Castillo is a better offensive LB than Bocanegra by far

This is huge because it give us options depending on who we are playing.

This guys is overrated as a left back IMHO. He does not defend good. He is better suited as a winger. Mexico do not need him as they did not need Torres. They have plenty of depth there. Mexico needs strikers.

"Castillo said he’s been following the US in the Confederations Cup and is aware that left back has been a question mark for US coach Bob Bradley. “They have a lot of good players. I don’t think I’d come in and be handed anything. But I’d like a chance to compete” for a starting spot. Castillo added that he has chatted about playing for the US with fellow Mexico-based Mexican Americans Jose Francisco Torres of Pachuca and Michael Orozco of San Luis."

That's the right attitude kid..... See the light and get away from the "dark side" :p

Can we please put this nickname to rest? Certainly his performance during this competition has made it obsolete.

Now Sunil needs to make the phone call...what the heck is he waiting for?

"Castillo said he hasn’t heard from the US Soccer Federation since FIFA’s rule change and he’s waiting until he does before he petitions FIFA to switch National Teams, a formality that must be completed if he’s going to play for the US."

Sunil is probably on his way home from South Africa

The rules changed the day of the Costa Rica qualifier..

I can understand the higher ups of the USSF being very busy with other items since the rules changes. They've had 2 World Cup Qualifiers, 5 Confederations Cup games, and 2 travels across the world.

Bob Bradley has had zero time. That's very understandable.

But it would be criminal not to call him within a few days of being back this week.

Why does no one seem to have a problem with this? First Jermaine Jones and now Edgar Castillo? Both of these players made their choice, and it was not our team. I'm sorry things did not pan out for you in your first choice, but don't come to us saying how you'd really enjoy playing for us when things don't go your way.
Obviously we sorely need a LB, but who wants to play second fiddle for someone who didn't choose our team to begin with? I hate this rule change, even if we're "benefiting" from it. I don't care if we found out that Kaka had an American father and wanted to switch alliances, it would still all be the same. I'm sorry to re-open a can of worms, but...How is this any different than Rossi (whom everyone seems to despise)? It's not; not even in the slightest. Yet we scold him at every opportunity and welcome these guys with open arms.
If these guys end up playing for us, I will not boo them nor will I speak another word of hate while they don the Red, White, & Blue. I will, however, point out the hypocrisy of a majority's point of view. Personally, if I were Bradley, I would tell them to come on down! You want to play for us now? Oh man, that's great! Give them one game so they're cap-tied then tell them to, for the lack of a better phrase, to go "F" themselves.

Also if he does switch once Guzman gets fired (they all do) he will not have a future in Mexico. They have what they call a Gentleman's Pact among the owners that blackball players that disrespect any team. I think they will blackball Castillo, he might have to ply his trade in MLS. I also hate this new rule change. I do not get what they are trying to do here. It will just mean more mercinaries (Jones).

I don't know how I feel about a player who, when given the opportunity to explain reasons he'd want to suit up for the USA, chooses to emphasize this.

I'm sure it will help his career. I'm sure playing for the US helps every nat player's career. With that said, I don't want to think that that is why they're suiting up. I'm pretty certain that's not what was motivating 11 guys last Sunday.

I'm sure this will become official during the Gold Cup.

It shouldn't take very long at all.

It's too bad that this wasn't possible sooner. Given the chance to be on the Gold Cup roster for the USA team would be a big boost for his possibilities.

I hope he excells, Jermain Jones heals perfectly, and we decided to use Castillo. With a Castillo coming up from the back, and having Jones/Landon/Dempsey in the midfield.. there is a chance to have a better passing attack. Maybe formulate some consistent threat form the run of the play.

And who knowes with the Counter Attack option right now being only Donovan and Davies... Castillo might be a great option coming up the rear to put in a cross.

I saw this guy play a lot for Santos last year. He was superb. Quick, clever, and deceptively strong. He's an attacking left back, and he will take people on and fly down the wing. We do not have a player like that, besides the failed DaMarcus Beasley experiment.

He got sold to America, not sure how he did there, but that club is a real mess recently.

He was crap for America. He's going back to Tigres and he'll play for his old coach. Hopefully that will bring back his form.

Castillo is a very talented player but is struggling at the moment. He'll get is form back and hopefully the USSF comes calling.

You ever know anyone who got divorced and then remarried an was much happier the second time around?

Does it make you love your new wife any less because you married someone else before?

    Life is complicated.

Besides, the United States WAS Castillo's first choice. But, he was never picked by the US so when Mexico came calling he accepted. Can't really blame him for accepting the El Tri call when he had been ignored by the US.

Now they've lost interest and he has a chance to play for the US again. Why not take it? I don't think he'll be any less devoted to the US because of his prior experience with Mexico. In fact, he may be MORE motivated because of it.

I agree. Lets extend this to club level too. I say form now on if the MLS drafts you that's the only team you can play on! Transferring just shows a complete lack of loyalty!

More than anything, I think they are trying to protect the African Countries that have their young talent pulled from them and cup tied early............once those players come of age they aren't playing for England, France, Etc afterall...and the African countries are left scrambling.

Why does everything here have to be so complicated? He's a natural left-footed winger/wingback and he's eligible to play for us. We should look at him. If we think he can help us, we should cap him and use him. If not, then there's really not a whole lot of get up-in-arms about.

If this Confederations Cup has shown us anything, it's that we can compete with the big guys for a short period of time, but ultimately suffer from our lack of depth and versatility. So we should make the most of our options and seize opportunities when they come along.

I have somewhat of a fear that Castillo is nothing more than Jonathan Bornstein version 2.0.

But as was previously stated, we need the depth.

I honestly don't think he's as good as Bornstein. And he's nowhere near what Pearce was when he was getting regular minutes with his club team.

But I agree - if we can get him into a camp, we should.

WHAT A GREAT IDEA! Because, that is not a completely ridiculous statement, it makes perfect sense! That would be like me saying, you know what? I'm a French citizen now because they'll pay me more money. A LOT MORE MONEY, AND THERE'S NOTHING YOU STUPID AMERICANS CAN DO ABOUT IT HAHAHAH! Then as soon as I went bankrupt: You know I was just joking, right? I really love America, can I have my welfare check?
