This statement is contradictory in my book. You don't care too much about the NT but yet you seem to have the knwoledge to know what is best for them and post about? You might care for them more than you think...;)

Most players in the Nutella comercials never seem to quite make it or "breakthrough" for the NT despite the hype around them. I would sight several examples but that would take me some time but one comes to mind is when Kuryani was let off the NT by Low, most German fans said, "Ahhhh...It's the Nutella curse", as he is one of thse players. It has become one of those "Urban Legends" for German fans.

    Re: Jermaine Jones update

I watch most of their games but I love soccer in general and I like club soccer more than NT soccer. I prefer attractive soccer, so yes, if Germany plays like at the Confed Cup 05 and the World Cup 06 I like them; if they are falling asleep on the pitch I don't have a problem to say that the opponent deserves the win. This doesn't keep me away from having an opinion though.

And I never questioned that nor will I...

My point was; You might care for them more than you think.

Funny...someone should tell Jones the US is much more PC than Germany before he thinks the US is all "Miami Ink" and "Family Guy".

    He made this error:

    .

Come Jack, i expect better! ;) :D Nice interview. Gives a little insight of who Jermaine is. Interesting that his Dad is from Mississippi. That's where I was born and live half my life. Funny too that it was in Greenwood. I have family in the MS Delta!

If at least one grandparent served in the SS or Wehrmacht it's not called "poaching"...

You must understand that the concept of nationality in Central Europe is different from Britain and its former colonies. And in Poland it's not any different. You cannot determine whether someone is German/Polish, etc by the requirements for someone being American. In the same way I cannot determine who is American by means of applying German law.

    Re: Jermaine Jones update

His 3 performances with Germany were rather "mediocre". But this was not because he was a bad player. He just never fit into Loew's game.

Frankly, I think he would have been a great addition to the German NT roster for 2010.

Fortunately, as a member of the US National team, he won't be under very much scrutiny.

You and FA are wrong. Firtst, she made about 6 points in that thread. I am reacting to the single line I quoted.

You guys are missing the point and need to read more carefully if you think I am reacting to quotes by Germans on THIS board. I commented on the point that "some Germans (not here, but perhaps on other boards or press, though she doesn't specifiy where) think you shouldn't switch..."

Lastly, I know switching after having played for another isn't the EXACT same thing, but it's under the same umbrella. Given that Germany has benefited from foreigners (Wermacht Repulicaners or not hehe), they should probably not complain too loudly about Jones...not making a big deal, just pointing out issues about the umbrella of switching in general, I wasn't bringing up exact comparisons. Why? Cuz this ruling only seems to have affected about 10 guys in the entire world, so of course there aren't going to be exact paralells, but the issue in general about being born here or there and then moving, and playing for a new country is the umbrella issue, and why I think Germans shouldn't be too outspoken on this issue.

OK, not gonna touch this, just quoting it to show the mods that "pot/kettle" opinions like this are out there :)

    Re: Jermaine Jones update

Firstly, I didn't comment on the Jones issue. I am fine with him switching allegiances after being snubbed by Loew.

The first part of my statement was over the top. But I am just annoyed to hear about Podolski, Klose, etc. over and over again through the lenses of American law. Once again, American and British law are different from German/Polish/Austrian law etc. This is not an opinion but a simple fact. The Polish-born immigrants who came to Germany before the Iron Wall fell were granted German citizenship immediately as they were regarded as "Spaetaussiedler", since they had at least one ancestor who was a German citizen before or during WW2 (Jus sanguinis). The children of Turks who have been living in Germany legally have not been given German citizenship until recently (2001) - finally I must add.

    Re: Jermaine Jones update

OP, I read the line you quoted and I understood it just fine. The problem is that you chose to focus on that extremely generic and indirect representation of one possible viewpoint among many (a representation of a viewpoint that--as stated--might just as easily entail disapproval of the very German players you're referencing, I might add) while ignoring the other 99 percent of that poster's comments, which are extremely generous.

As for Emperor Norton's post, he was responding to you. The fact that you're the one who threw the stinkbomb prevents you from being able to complain about the smell.

    Please drop the issue.

Well, at least Jones managed to piss off most of Germany with this interview.

    Even Schalke fans are disappointed.

It's not like most Americans think we're all still Nazis anyway, so...

When he was at Frankfurt he became a God for the fans there despoite not being "blond and blue-eyed". He became a Bundesliga captain aged 25 despite having tattoos.

Odonkor has tattoos and is black and I don't think German fans have ever loved a player more than him so Jones should really ask himself if there could be another reason why he's such a controversial figure?

He also doesn't seem to know the length of his contract either. He's under contract till 2014 at Schalke.

    Re: Jermaine Jones update

I am sorry for the smell. Having read the article in the Times and then reading the accusation of poaching players from Poland for the 1000st time (so it is surely wrong to single out Optimus in that regard) I just got incredibly annoyed as the history of Germany and Eastern Europe is rather delicate and quite complicated. After the war, there were millions of Germans who were trapped in Eastern Europe and Asia. And they couldn't go to Germany as there was no such thing as freedom of movement. And in the 80s and 90s they were allowed to go to Germany and I don't like it when this immigation of about 5.000.000 people is simplified into poaching football players from Eastern Europe....

And that was my last soccer-unrelated post in that thread.

(And I take back the "Iron Wall" from my penultimate comment.)

The german sport magazine "Kicker" says that Jones ist the best DM from the Bundeliga:
    1. Jermaine Jones
    2. Thomas Hitzlsperger
    3. Josué
    4. Sebastian Kehl
    5. Zé Roberto
    6. Torsten Frings
    7. Sami Khedira
    ...

A lot of times, when you are vastly outnumbered demographic wise like Jones is, those feelings can come virtually out of nowhere. It's natural to want to feel like everybody else around you... I think the German media is being harsh. He never said that Low didn't choose him because he was black and had tattoos, just that maybe some people didn't like him as much because he isn't a perfect German.

The context of the NYT article, at least in English, wasn't as aggressive as the German papers are making it out to be.

And let's not forget that Jones' command of spoken English may not be perfect. A telephone interview is never easy in a second language.

(That said, his English is still probably better than most Americans..)
