Well, that wasn't pretty. So much for "no comment."

    Well that certainly wasn't subtle.

When you don't say the previous coach committed NCAA violations but you don't say he didn't, it ain't hard to read between the lines.

Most of you know how I feel about recruiting internationally so you can imagine my surprise in reading an AD's comments that sounded like they were written by me.

I kinda imagine the interview between Briz and Weaver went something like this:

Weaver: We don't want to deal with this gray area, to be polite, with international players anymore. Can you win with mostly American players?

    Brizendine: Uh, yes?

Weaver: That's what I wanted to hear. I'm glad we're on the same page HEAD coach.

So what we are getting to is that Va. Tech rid themself of Oliver because of certain improper acts that occurred while recruiting international players?

Then, in all reality, aren't the assistant coaches as responsible for letting these recruiting violations happen as the head coach. Obviously Oliver was the one with the international pull, but are you telling me that Mike B. didn't have any hand in getting the international players admitted/funded/cleared/whatever?

It just seems odd to fire one staff member and not the rest for supposed violations that happened under their watch...

although the timing makes it easy to hire an assistant...

I'm sure he did, but the Weiss was ultimately responsible for the direction of the program. If Briz was willing to take recruiting in another direction (no brainer move for him, really) then that is an easy hire for the AD to make.

Let's be honest, if the guy can get even a minimal commitment from the the athletic department and adds some passion, commitment and competency of his own, the school/conference/competition should recruit itself.

This is not basketball. I am sure Oliver was 100% responsible for recruiting the German and international players. That is his turf. Assistant probably focused on domestic recruiting.

I can tell you with 100% certainty that this is correct. Oliver did the international recruiting in Germany and Ghana through his own connections. Briz had basically no part in this.

So no where did Mike B have to file paperwork with the school regarding these players and suspect anything fishy going along. Maybe I am wrong, but it would seem some sort of paperwork would go along with this and completing those documents would probably fall in the hands of the assistants...

I could be way wrong here, I just can't imagine the assistants had no idea of what was happening.

You are assuming way too much. There has been NO proof of any wrong doings by Oliver or anyone in the program. Only thing I know and you know as well is that the athletic department wants to focus on domestic recruiting instead of international recruiting. There could be a number of reasons why that is the case--possible violations are pure speculation without merit at this point.

I'm sure the "resignation" had a lot to do with being charged with assault against his daughters.

As I said on the thread about his arrest, Trevor violated the cardinal rule of the non-revenue coach and athlete, which is to stay out of trouble and not embarass the school.

The schools are complete whores and will put up with a lot from the programs that make money but they tend not to be so forgiving when a program isn't bringing in any revenue and college soccer falls under that criteria.

That said, I wish Trevor well in the next step of his life and hope he finds a coaching gig at the club or college level soon.

As for a replacement, allow me to suggest one the program's all-time greats: Bruce Murray.

He doesn't have much college coaching experience (none as a head coach) but he's been a very accomplished youth coach and he has tremendous background as a player. He played in the WC, in England for Milwall and, of course, was part of two NCAA trophies at Clemson, where he won the 1987 Hermann Award.

So between the time Bruce Arena left UVa for DC United (early 1996) and John Rennie retired (after the 2007 season) there was no turnover among ACC men's soccer programs.

Now there are three in less than two years including two suddenly in the past couple of weeks.

Weird that after so much stability the ACC has this much turnover, even though there are valid reasons for it at each school.

And yet thoughout all the turnover, George Tarantini somehow keeps his job.

Wow. Talk about a varied background. Coach of the Washington Capitals NHL team in the 1980's, fired and replaced by his own brother, goes on to be GM for who knows how many NHL clubs, and now college soccer coach.

    Oh, wait...

    :D

That was Bryan Murray, who was replaced by his brother, Terry.

The Caps current coach has Bruce for a first name but his last name isn't Murray. Also, a couple of coaches ago the head coach was Bruce Cassidy.

    Nice try, though.

Of course!! It's all coming together now. That Murray guy (not to be confused with that Cassidy kid from the Partridge family) who along with Chevy Chase Maryland (just down the road from the Washington Capitals) provided inspiration for aspiring golfer Danny (be the ball) Noonan who later turned his focus to playing soccer until the right coaching opportunity presented itself. Must be time to put the cap back on the whiteout jar.

I don't know if this has already been posted, but Humboldt State, a D-2 program in California is looking for a new head coach. Andrew Cumbo departed to to take over at Cal State East Bay...East Bay is also entering D-2 play after playing a season at D-3.

Just looking at some names from the list of top 25 teams on soccerratings.com of coaches who might be interested in the Clemson job arguably one of the best jobs in the country for soccer potential and $$$. Here is the list in order of finish last year:
    • Wake Forest - No
    • Maryland - No
    • St. Johns - Too much New York/New Jersey in Dave Masur
    • Creighton – Interesting. Does Bob Warmingget a little itchy after 8 years in his 2nd go round in Nebraska ? Like Larry Brown always looking for the next thing.
    • Akron - Porter has started something great with back to back tremendous recruiting classes, but it is Akron after all. If they come calling he would have to take a look.
    • Indiana – No
    • Loyola (MD) - Mark Metrick quietly dominating the MAAC, but that is probably not enough.
    • South Florida - Keifer has gotten to the Elite Eight and won the competitive Big East. A much better tradition and $$$ from camps.
    • Notre Dame – No
    • Northwestern – Another interesting scenario. Lenahan has worked a miracle in Chicago and seems to be settled. Lack of scholarships and university support though could get him thinking
    • Michigan State – No, first year coach
    • Tulsa – McIntosh took a good look at SMU last year. Might use this to stir up his own situation at Tulsa.
    • UC-Irvine – First year of success for UCI and George is a California guy.
    • North Carolina – No
    • Michigan – No – Burns a Michigan guy.
    • Boston College – No Kelly a northeast guy and probably not far from calling it a day.
    • California – Cal has Grimes stamp all over it and seems to be fairly settled. Would think if he wanted to jump that SMU would have been the one.
    • Harvard – Not a lot of experience at head coach but good pedigree. Probably will wait for Dad to retire at ND.
    • UConn – No.
    • UC-Davis – No. Good coach but new to the party.
    • Dartmouth – Clemson went the Ivy rout before. Jeff Cook seems to quietly get it done year in and year out. Could he create a dynamic enough team after grinding it out in the Ivies ?
    • UCSB – No. Von Steeg with a great thing out west and College Cup is coming.
    • UCLA – No.
    • Boston U. – No.
    • Virginia. – No.
    Some others:

Noonan, Brown. Well respected for his training and knowledge. Getting into the now or never in terms of leaving. Would Clemson go to Brown for a coach twice in a row ?

Andrulis, George Mason. Done a good job with Mason getting that back in the dance a couple of times. MLS experience sets him a part from others.

Murry, CASL. One of the all-time greats at Clemson but with limited coaching experience at the college level. Risky, but will they bring home a prodigal son ?

Trask, UIC. – No. Sweet Home Chicago.

Great post...now we should throw Bob Bradleys name in the mix as well. I also see Shaun Docking trying (but not getting this) and also think Bruce Murray likes too golf too much and is way to lazy to grind for 24/7/365 in the ACC.

Hes tenured.......and doesnt do well, I would think Clemson wants to win a national championship. Im comparing Murray to Sasho and Viddy not Tarantini.

    I blame myself.

I prayed that the worse coach in the ACC would get the boot. However, I underestimated God's lack of college soccer knowledge.

GOD - AN ACCENT DOESN'T MAKE A GOOD SOCCER COACH!!

    sheesh! ;)
