I'd call this a shock result, and possibly the biggest shock since the AFC Presidents Cup began.

Really what this means is WAPDA is ahead of Abahani as the best second placed team so far. With the AFC bylaws you need a rocket scientist to figure this out. Here's my humble analysis:
Since all groups don't have four teams, AFC has decided that for groups with four teams all results with fourth placed team will be cancelled for the purpose of comparing the best second placed finisher amongst the three groups. So, WAPDA is second with 4 points and goal difference of 2 in the Nepal group (Regar has the same points and goal difference, but have scored more and hence, the group winners); Abahani has 4 points but a goal difference of 1.
For Myanmar fans, Kanbawza needs to beat the team from Cambodia convincingly (3 goal margin to be safe), beat or tie host Dordoi in order to get at least 4 points and a goal difference of 3 or more. It is very likey that the team from Bhutan will come last losing to all and concede dozens of goals. So, for Kanbawza it will not matter how many goals they win by against Bhutan. As crazy as it may seem these (I believe) are the rules. Last year, based on these tie-breakers Kanbawza did not qualify even though they scored most goals and overall had enough points to be the best second placed team.
    Hopefully Kanbawza will make it.

Well, i can see Kanbawza and Dordoi getting 6 points each against the other two teams, leaving these 2 to play each other for the winners spot.

Leaving 2nd place on a 6 points total assuming its not a draw. So it's going to be tough.

    I don't think so.
For example, in Semifinal of AFC President Cup 2007, Regar-Tadaz has been beaten by Mahendra Police Club (now Nepal Police Club) with score 1:2.

if Dordoi will top Group C next month, then the situation will be exactly the same as last year AFC President Cup 2008 edition group stage, where all Central Asian teams are topped their groups.

This kind of shows where the strength is at this level - certainly seem to have one up on the SAFF region anyway.

What i would like to see AFC do in the future, is turn this competition into a 2 group format featuring 5 or 6 teams per group with winners going into a final - all could be played in one host country and played over a 3 eek period.

This would give the opporunity for the lower ranked teams to get a couple more games and would really show us a true winner - at the moment, we have some teams playing negative football - that's certainly the opinion of WAPDA followers anyway - looking for the slim 1 points and hoping to qualify through the back door.

That is sad for fans of these countries who don't have teams representing them in these competitions.

I think Lao Army FC could play in terms of quality. I've not seen their games but since Laotian players are probably the best or 2nd best in the lower side of Asean, their league, even if not professional, should be somewhat playable to develop these players. I guess they didn't want to participate, as they often pull out of tournaments.

    Dordoi hit rough patch

It’s time for some serious introspection for Dordoi-Dynamo.

The Kyrgyzstan champions, who lost one and drew another league match at home, will be desperate to get their act together before their AFC President’s Cup campaign kicks off on June 10.

The two-time continental winners lost in the pre-quarterfinals of the Kyrgyzstan Cup to second division club Jivoe Pivo on penalties 4-3 and were held 1-1 in the eighth round of the domestic league by leaders Alai.

Sergey Dvoryankov’s charges were put ahead by Russian import Maksim Kretov from the spot eight minutes before the hour but former international midfielder Dmitry Krohmal restored parity for Pivo also from a penalty. Both the teams were locked 1-1 at the end of regulation and extra-time.

Dordoi-Dynamo were trailing due to an Azat Baimatov strike for Alai but Ghanian Daniel Tagoe scored the equaliser for them in the stoppage time.

They are now second in the nine-team standings with 16 points, three less than Alai but Dordoi have played two games less.

2008 AFC President’s Cup runners-up Dordoi will host the Group C games of this year’s edition. Other teams in the pool are Myanmar’s Kanbawza, Cambodia’s Phnom Penh Crown FC and Bhutanese outfit Yeedzin FC.

    STANDINGS: 1. Alai 19 points (8 games), 2. Dordoi-Dynamo 16 (6), 3. Abdysh-Ata 14 (6), 4. Jashtyk-Ak-Altyn 14 (8), 5. Sher 9 (6).

BISHKEK: Dordoi-Dynamo coach Sergey Dvoryankov is hoping that his team’s experience at the continental level will help them qualify for the semi-finals of the 2009 AFC President’s Cup starting here on Wednesday.

The two-time champions will host the Group C games, which also includes Bhutan’s Yeedzin FC, Myanmar’s Kanbawza and Cambodian outfit Phnom Penh Crown FC.

“Our immediate goal is to win the group and make it to the semi-finals. This can be achieved because we have more experience of playing in this competition which our rivals lack,” he said on the eve of his team’s opener against the Bhutanese side.

Russian Maksim Kretov, who is Dordoi’s top scorer in the domestic league, will miss the group stage since he joined the club after the AFC President’s Cup registrations were over.

In his absence, Dvoryankov will use the services of Ghanians David Tetteh and Daniel Tagoe.

Kanbawza coach Aye Maung said that his players are ready for the event and their target is to qualify from the group as winners.

“Our football league became professional only this year but the team is in good shape and our target is to reach the semi-finals,” he said.

Phnom Pehn Crown FC and Yeedzin FC will make their debut in this competition while Kanbawza were eliminated in the group stage last year.

Defending champions Turkmenistan’s Regar-TadAZ and Turkmenistan’s Ashgabat have already qualified for the semi-finals winning Group A and B respectively. Best runners-up team from among the three groups will complete the last four line-up.

Match reports are are now on the AFC webpage. For Kanbawza, Soe Min Oo had a hat trick; Khin Mg Lwin had one. Just from the report, it appears that KZ scored first and then went down 1-3, then scored three goals - ALL goals were scored before HT. Wow. Also, from names it appears that the two foreign players for the Cambodian outfit served the team well by scoring all goals (Roger 2, Oscar 1).
Another observation was there were only 3 subs listed for KZ. Key players including Kyaw Thi Ha and Soe Myat Min were not - did they even make the trip?
The result is somewhat mixed as I had hoped that KZ needed to win by at least a 2 goal margin to keep their chances alive to qualify to the semis. Chances are Dordoi will beat Crown comfortably - I only say that because I simply don't know how this team plays, hence giving Dordo the benefit of doubt. So, my calculated wish is KZ simply take the next game against the Bhutan outfit easier (assuming they are last, their results against the rest of the teams won't count) by resting some player winning comfortably and then go all out for a win against the hosts. Hope Crown can help us with a draw.
A couple of interesting ties ahead!

Soe Myat Min did not make the trip I think. He's injured and out since the game against Yadanarbon in which Kanbawza lost. Kyaw Thi Ha is a pretty nippy player on his day. I enjoyed his performance against Malaysia in 2007 Asean Cup, he was menacing. Myanmar drew because he and Yan Paing couldn't finish.

As for the result, I expected Crown to be challenging. Kanbawza is not in good form, as you could tell from reports of the way they play in the league. Key players are out. And even if they are fully charged and on-form, I think Crown are no easy push-overs, they are a pretty established club with foreign players.

Although Kanbawza is not exactly the best team in Myanmar currently and does not represent the new league correctly, they are made up of all Burmese players so I guess they do represent Burmese football. Gone are the days in which a Myanmar club team (used to be under gov. ministries) had at least 7 of the best players in the country. Now good players are evenly divided among the new professional clubs.

Let's not be over-confident against Yeedzin FC. But I agree that if they go all out on that match, the players might not be on full alert against Dordoi, and it seems like if Crown could score 3 goals, Dordoi would definitely score if KZ continue to slack.

BISHKEK: Four goals from striker Mirlan Murzaev helped Dordoi-Dynamo begin their 2009 AFC President’s Cup campaign in style thrashing Bhutan’s Yeedzin FC 7-0 on Wednesday.

In another Group C game, Myanmar’s Kanbawza overcame Cambodia’s Phnom Penh Crown FC 4-3 in a thrilling encounter.

Mirlan Murzaev’s perfect freekick in the second minute gave Sergey Dvoryankov’s side a lead.

The Bhutanese were reduced to 10-man when their goalkeeper Hari Gurung was given his marching orders in the 15th minute for bringing down Ildar Amirov inside the area and Murzaev easily converted the resultant penalty to make it 2-0.

Ghanaian David Tetteh made it 3-0 in the 29th minute while substitute
Artem Mulajanov scored the hosts’ fourth two minutes after replacing Amirov a minute into the second half.

Murzaev header five minutes after the hour mark completed his hat-trick while he netted the team’s sixth goal 14 minutes later on a Tetteh pass and the Ghanian completed the rout with a 87th-minute strike.

Despite the big win, Dvoryankov questioned Murzaev’s team spirit saying, “Murzaev thought that he is playing alone by totally ignoring his teammates.”

In an action-packed first half, striker Soe Min Oo gave Kanbawza the lead in the seventh minute only to see Koua Oscar making it 1-1 13 minutes later.

Two goals in the space of nine minutes by striker Lappe Roger gave Phnom Pehn Crown FC a 3-1 lead but two more goals from Soe Min Oo and a strike from defender Khin Maung Lwin earned full points for Kanbawza.

The main issue for Kanbawza FC is that they joined this Cup only with the 17 players and some of the players are not eligible to participate in the Cup, because these players are not on the original player list that Kanbawza submitted to AFC. Kanbawza FC replaced some of the players because of the injuries and fail to inform the AFC, how can they be so careless!!!!

KBZ website indicates we beat the Bhutanese team 4-2. Were they taking easy? Clearly not a good sign for the next game against Dordoi. Let's hope Crown ties them later. But KBZ must play to win
