Give me 3 moves you would make to improve the team either making a run for this year, or rebuilding for the future. (Try to include a realistic foreign signing, a trade you could see working within MLS, who you would pick in next year's draft, who you protect for the expansion draft)

Feel free to be conservative or very imaginative but try to make it realistic, not: Shalrie to Chicago for Calen Carr.

Number 2 Is the best answer I've ever seen..why hasn't anyone in the Revs Org. thought of it. Brilliant. Spectacular. But, alas, I think it will simply go for naught and no one will even entertain it. Amazing...who would of thunk that a simple ? would stir such emotion, such passion. C'mon, you really think no one in the Revs Org would have thought of it? Guess not...

Tried to Rep..but I've given you way to much..must re-load!!

    1. Use Albright as trade bait to land a forward of quality between Dube and Twellman.

    2. Sit down with Nicol and ask him what players he needs and what his budget his in the upcoming transfer window.

    3. Return Figo's phone call.

    (1) Make sure no one in the organization reads the Big Soccer Boards

    (2) Tell Steve Nicol that the franchise supports his master plan and that the front office will buy him what he requests knowing he understands the economic realities of MLS.

    (3) Post a new dress code for game day and provide the Coaching staff with a stipend so they can buy suits, shirts and ties.

    1. Thank Steve Nicol for his service and his dedication to the club, but explain that it's time for the organization to move in a different direction.

    2. Attempt to hire Duke Head Coach John Kerr as a replacement. Proven track record as a Head Coach, familiar with the college game, his teams play attacking soccer, played in the Premier League, played in MLS, played for the USMNT, has ties to the region.

    3. Call Chivas USA and see if they'd be interested in a trading Maykel Gallindo and Sasha Victorine for Chris Albright and Kheli Dube.

I'd get on the phone to Houston to talk about Kai Kamara. We need a big strong, physical forward - now and when Twellman comes back. Thompson, Nyassi, Albright, Heaps, Reis are some of the names on the table along with allocation resources, DP spots, draft picks, etc.

I'd also check to see if Van Den Bergh still needs to be in Dallas.

I'd be more than happy with both of these moves. There are very very few untouchables on our roster. Feel free to make some moves ... for THIS year. I am sick of moves for the future (that haven't yet panned out anyway).

    1) Trade Phelan, a couple Maine Lobsters, a case of Sam Adams and a pint of Ben and Jerry's to Chicago for Chris Rolfe, so he can learn from Steve Ralston
    2) Use the DP/allocation money to pick up a strong (TALL) forward to pair with Twellman
    3) Take a long hard introspective look at myself and wonder why I consider Wells Thompson a starter.

    1. I'd look in USL for cheap additions. Montreal and Puerto Rico proved the gap between the top USL clubs and MLS really isn't that bad, while players like Mac Kandij and Sebastian Le Toux are sliding right into teams and performing well.

I'd say sign someone like Cristian Arrieta, who as a defender lead Puerto Rico in scoring (seven goals, two assists) while maintaining the best defensive record (23 conceded), as well as having experience playing in Italy and in the CONCACAF CL.

Jonathan Steele, a midfielder, could be the solution to some of our present issues in the central area of midfield, and at 23 is the acting USL-1 MVP.

    2. Schedule Open Cup games in Boston and continue to try to pull in some interest from the soccer crowd that's not coming to games.

    3. Send Mansally and Videira to a USL-1 side on loan, cut Phelan and potentially Wells, though he's had a few decent games this past month, and send Castro or Badilla to the DL to open up roster spots.

There is a point in there somewhere...the games at Harvard Stadium would be a good idea, but the non-going crowd will not be wooed by our second-stringers, holy crap, our A-team is gonna have to play those games.

We will be out first round

Forgive my stream-of-consciousness plan for the Revs future. I based my moves on my feeling that the Revs need to tear it all up and start all over, except keep Joseph and Ralston as untouchables.

For my foreign signing, it sounds unimaginative at this point and many people would be critical, but I’m going to have to sign Luis Figo to a DP contract to play LM. I think his impact on attendance would be great, give the team momentum for a downtown stadium, as well as entice other foreign internationals to consider the Revs.

For my trades I tried to identify moves that make sense for teams’ needs as well as salary.

    Trade #1:
Chivas USA receives: F Taylor Twellman, Allocation Money
New England receives: D Jonathan Bornstein, 2nd Rd MLS SuperDraft pick and
M Sasha Victorine (to even up salaries some more, then cut Victorine, because I see potential in Videira)

    Trade #2:
Kansas City receives: M Jeff Larentowicz, D Jay Heaps
New England receives: M Jack Jewsbury, M Michael Harrington

Along with Victorine, I have released Kheli Dube and Wells Thompson, and have decided to retain Amaechi Igwe even though his GA status is gone, albeit at a lower price. I’ve released Zack Simmons because I don’t see a point in keeping a 3rd goalkeeper, and Maurico Castro because I can’t justify his 120k.

    Expansion Draft protected:
    FWDs: Mansally, Simon
MIDs: Joseph, Harrington, Nyassi, Jewsbury, Videira
    DEFs: Barnes, Osei, Igwe
    GKs: Knighton

I don’t think anybody would choose the remaining Tierney, Badilla, or Videira, so I think we’re set there.

Take the best target forward in the Superdraft, possibly DePaul’s Steffen Vroom, to bolster the attack. His name makes it worth it.

Obviously, the forward area is the major concern left. I’d have to take a look at the USL’s crop of forwards, preferably for a target forward in my 4-5-1/4-3-3. I’d dangle Nyassi over Houston’s heads hoping they would dish me Kamara for some youthful wing play. I’d have to consider Necaxa’s Alfredo Moreno, Australia’s Archie Thompson, Honduras’ Sergio Dudich, or Central Coast’s Matt Simon, depending on remaining salary.

Apparently, I need to have 4 Dev Spots filled, so if Phelan, Assengue, Mansally, or Vroom don’t accept a reduced contract, I might have to cut one of my players and sign a rookie.

Up to right now my total salary is at about 2.58 million. That probably works out within MLS guidelines including whatever transfer revenue or allocation money the Revs have.
Trading Chris Albright is in right now, but I couldn’t justify anybody taking on an aging defender who makes 175k. Sucks that his contract goes through 2011.
I also explored trading Matt Reis but I couldn’t find a trade that would make sense, so I guess I would just let his contract expire, then give him a lowball 33k offer to keep his MLS rights. I might be forced into shedding Reis’ contract early via trade in order to afford the forward signing. Reis for Khumalo, etc.?

Even after all this I’m still not that satisfied with my depth at forward, but I think I’ve made some improvements within MLS’ specific salary structure. At the very least I would see signing Figo as a business win, gaining some depth, getting younger, and fixing out current shoddy wing play.

    Final Result:
    Simon
    Figo - - - - Ralston - - - Harrington -
    Jewsbury - - - Joseph
    Bornstein - - - Osei - - - Barnes - - - Alston
    Reis

    Bench:
    GK: Knighton
    FWDs: Mansally, Assengue
    MIDs: Videira, Nyassi
    DEFs: Igwe, Badilla

Rest:
    FWD: Vroom
    MIDs: Phelan, Colaluca, Tierney
    DEFs: Albright, Rookie

DEVs: Alston, Colaluca, “Rook”, Assengue (assuming he complies)

EDIT: Reading others' posts its interesting that we both considered Sasha Victorine and Kei Kamara.

Specific moves are always speculation, but I'd be finding out what sort of market there is for Jeff Larentowicz.

I'd love to see players like Chris Rolfe and Michael Harrington brought in.

One guy who intrigues me is Benny Feilhaber. He needs to play more if he wants to get games with the USMNT. Plus, the Revs have a history of getting players onto the national team and into international deals. Maybe he's the guy the club should make its DP. Spend a season and a half taking a star turn in MLS (and making some decent coin while doing so), then try to make a splash in Europe at age 26. Seems like a good career move for Feilhaber and he's exactly the kind of player the club needs.

Hell, if you are going to start from scratch, sell SJ and use the $ to buy a DP. Trade Rally for a top tier player with more youth. And sell Ries, albright and TnT while your at it. All those players would get you a very good mid career player.
keep the youth and build on that

I've also thought Feilhaber style of play would fit perfectly in our midfield, however, form what i understand he as a really attitude/ego problem so he maybe a very poor fit personality/chemistry wise.

I agree it would be a good move career wise for Feilhaber.

From what I gather, Feilhaber is a bit on the jerky side, but some of that might be youth.

He is getting some games at Aarhus at the moment, but it's mostly a late season trial. He's no sure bet to get regular work with the club next year.

My take is he'd be willing to shelve his European ambitions if the Revs played "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?" with him. Plus, if he comes to MLS and dominates, that's bound to catch Bob Bradley's attention and help Feilhaber in his quest to win the CAM role for South Africa in 2010.

Maybe he's impossible, meaning either he won't consider an MLS gig or the Revs wouldn't want him, but in terms of style of play, youth and career motivation I'm hard-pressed to think of a better fit.

You can be ridiculous about it (see above), or you can come to the realization that there are fans in the city that aren't driving down to Foxboro to see a game. I live in Cambridge and I have a 1 year old, and I typically can't take a whole day on a weekend to find my way down to Gillette and back, but I certainly would head over to Harvard Stadium or to BU after work for an Open Cup game. Now, maybe I'm not the fan you need to woo, because I'm already a fan.... but, it would be nice to see a game in town every now and then.
