First Round 16 match today: Salzburg 5 - 1 Austria Wien Leading the table after 13 rounds, Austria has now lost three straight to fall off the pace. His teammate Zickler won the Bundesliga scoring crown with 16 tallies last season...

Altach continues in the Relegation spot since Runde 8.
Marc Janko made history in the game of his team against Austria Kärnten. With scoring is 23rd, 24th and 25th goal of the season, achieving a classic hattrick, he broke two records at once. First the internal club goal scoring record of Oliver Bierhoff, by the time as Austria Salzburg, from the season 1990/91. Second the Bundesliga half-season record of the legendary Anton "Toni" Polster, who had 23 goals after the half of the 1986/87 season. Janko still leads in Europe's goal scorer sheet, now having scored incredible 25 times in 18 games. Even though Janko is now hunted by several European clubs, Hertha BSC, Schalke, Tottenham Hotspur, to name a few, a transfer seems unrealistic because the 25 year-old from Lower Austria still has a running contract in Salzburg until 2011.

Leading by a commanding ten points with six matches remaining, Salzburg had a minor setback this past weekend, losing 3-0 at Ried. Meanwhile, Rapid Wien made up three points by winning the Vienna derby 3-2 over Austria Wien. But after 31 rounds, Salzburg is still in the driver's position. Standings After 31 Rounds Salzburg 68 Rapid Wien 61 Sturm Graz 54 Austria Wien 54 Ried 48 Kärnten 41 LASK Linz 31 Kapfenberg 29 Mattersburg 23 Altach 23 Austria Wien currently sits out of the European spot zone, but they've got another avenue to qualify via the Austrian Cup. As the only Bundesliga representative in the semifinals, along with three Erste Liga teams, including their own amateur squad, Austria Wien advanced to the finals where they'll face Trenkwalder Admira, currently second in the Erste Liga. Austrian Stiegl Cup Semifinals Austria Wien (Amateurs) 1 - 3 Trenkwalder Admira Wiener Neustadt 0 - 1 Austria Wien
Round 32 Austria Wien 0 - 0 Mattersburg Altach 1 - 1 Sturm Graz Kapfenberg 2 - 1 Ried LASK Linz 0 - 2 Rapid Wien Salzburg 6 - 0 Kärnten Both Salzburg and Rapid won, so Salzburg still has a seven-point lead atop the table. That's a pretty comfortable distance with four rounds to go. Pretty hard to imagine Rapid stealing the title at this point. At the bottom of the table, Mattersburg and Altach are tied on points. It's going to be a real battle between these two to avoid relegation. Marc Janko scored two of Salzburg's six this weekend, taking his total to 37 Bundesliga goals this season. He's still four short of Hans Krankl's record.
Round 33 Rapid Wien 4 : 2 Salzburg Ried 4 : 0 Mattersburg LASK Linz 2 : 0 Altach Sturm Graz 2 : 2 Austria Wien Kärnten 0 : 2 Kapfenberg Well, it's not over yet. In a must-win match, Rapid did just that at home to Salzburg. Immediately after Marc Janko tied the score at 1-1 just past the break, Erwin Hoffer went on a tear, scoring a hat-trick within a 25-minute span. Hoffer also recorded a hat-trick at Salzburg last spring. In the last three weeks, Salzburg's lead has been trimmed from ten to four points. With another three rounds to go, it's now become interesting at the top. In the relegation battle, both Mattersburg and Altach lost on the road, though Altach has to feel they could have earned the point needed to climb above Mattersburg. They held LASK Linz scoreless until after the 90th minute. Salzburg 71 Rapid Wien 67 Sturm Graz 56 Austria Wien 56 Ried 51 Kärnten 41 Kapfenberg 35 LASK Linz 34 Mattersburg 24 Altach 24
Ried played an interesting part in the title chase, as just a few weeks after beating Salzburg and making things a little uncomfortable for them, they defeated Rapid on Sunday as well. Since Salzburg had won on Saturday to give themselves a seven point lead, the fact that Rapid didn't keep pace meant that Salzburg clinched the title with two matches to play. The only two questions remaining are whether Sturm Graz can make up the two point deficit on Austria VIenna to get the other Europa League (UEFA Cup) spot, and whether Altach can keep from being relegated. Since Mattersburg has a three point lead in ninth, a better goal differential, and a pretty favorable schedule, I think Altach is in trouble. BTW, I haven't been able to follow things around here for a while, and my time to look in on Austian/Swiss football has been limited. When did sport1.at become so terrible? It used to have tons of analysis and stats and stuff on the Bundesliga, but now, even with my horrible knowledge of German, I was bored in about 20 minutes. Does anyone else agree?
