I was just wondering who people thought were the fastest players, with and with out the ball. For me its:

    W/o Agbonlahor

    With Messi

Joffre Guerron - currently at Getafe (ESP), MVP of Copa Libertadores 2008.

By the way this is in the 2nd period of overtime, and yes, he did start the match.

Cruyff always says you don't need to be fast if you can read the game which is a fair point to some extent.

Anyway, fastest player in the NL right now is Eljero Elia, left winger for Twente.

Back in the '90's there was a player for Holland & Feyenoord, Ulrich Van Gobbel. He apparantly he would have been fast enough to compete at the Olympics.

Furthermore I read somewhere that he is so fast that he is now on the run from police for some car fraud scheme!!!

I never saw any games of him other than one national game at WC94.

Can any Dutch or Feyenoord supporters back this up???

Weird, check out the Bentley details.

19.6 mph to the ball and 21.3 with the ball. Must have got them mixed up.

Even if they are mixed up, I have a very hard time believing Bentley is faster than Agbonlahor (21.1 mph to the ball). Bentley must have had a 50 meter foot race near the start of that match.

As I said in my opening post it is taken from an individual head-to-head match and it does not take the situations into account. The figures are only the top speed they recorded during that one match as opposed to the actual top speed of player. The with the ball figure can be higher and 'slower' players might appear higher in the list as a direct result.

Abou Diaby, whilst running with the ball, absolutely destroyed Agbonlahor in a dead sprint back in November at Villa park. Agbonlahor is fast, but his small stride makes him look faster than he is.

Bernard Mendy is very fast as is Eto'o and Gerrard.

I think you're mistaken Van Gobbel for Glenn Helder, the former Arsenal left winger. He was a gambling addict and ended up living in his car. I think van Gobbel is a born again Christian!

Marc Overmars AKA Zoof Zoof was probably one of the quickest players Holland's ever had. He didn't even need any particularly good moves to get past his opponents, he just shot the ball past them and then outran them.

Did a quick wiki check on Van Gobbel and it says he is on the run... whether this is true is another thing

    You could be right.

Though Ronaldo did lose his footing here, but considering Overmar's age it is quite impressive.

Klose was faster than him during his trials at Bayern.

Back to the topic at hand; I would say David Odonker. Though he didn't have much football ability elsewhere other than crossing, he is (was) ridiculously fast!!!

That was his last ever professional game, no?

Although, that was when Ronaldo was 19. Since then he has got a lot faster after bulking up and presumably doing a lot of sprint work.

Yep. Even whilst running with the ball, Diaby comfortably out sprinted Agbonlahor to the extent Gabby tried to hack him down.

    Steven Gerrard ofcourse.
Not only is he one of the fastest CM's in the world, any player that would be quicker than him will lose out to the speed of his anticipation and awareness.:D

Is that why he's always falling down before defenders touch him?
