Not bad for a team that hasn't played a minute in MLS yet.

Qwest Field, which will host the 2009 MLS Cup, opens the season on national television March 19. (Seattle Sounders FC)

    Good on Seattle! :)

However, the only disturbing bit of news from that press release is that for the first time ever, the MLS Cup final will be televised on ESPN/ESPN-HD rather than on ABC/ABC-HD. That's certainly a step backward. :(

    GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!!

Isn't ESPN cable only? Or do you mean you're going to watch the Quakes in person up in Seattle. :D

Too lazy to read. Does it say anywhere that they aren't going to bring in grass?

But merely average for a team piggy-backing on the NFL.

No slight to their fans or owners, but that gridiron stadium is the reason for much of your list.

Yeah, I'm a little bit jealous. However, I would rather have grown up with the MLS, warts and all, and experienced the lows of the Clash and highs of the 2001-2005 Quakes.

Not really. We're in a primetime slot now on the biggest sports network in the US if not the planet. The slot change alone will probably improve our ratings over a midday slot on a slowly dying network like ABC. Besides, almost everyone had cable or dish these days anyway.

I went to Qwest field when Celtic played Man Utd - summertime in Seattle is pretty awesome if you're going to a friendly

I had to change the title. I just refuse to entertain the notion that MLS Cup 2009 isn't in some way Quakes related.
    I guess I'm a power abusing mod.

A good run at the playoffs. Playing all that crap in the middle of the season with an expansion side looks like Seattle forfeiting the season to me.

They haven't even kick a ball yet? How can you say that? And it's not like the fans last year did not forfeit the season either on this very forum.

Don't recall any fans forfeiting the season last year on here, but even if they did fans aren't the FO. And they don't have to kick a ball yet. Look at what our team did, when we played FAS and the Timbers we started second stringers. Unless Seattle wants to lose to Barca and Chelsea by scores of 10-0 then they won't have that option. They'll have to play starters thus wearing them out that much more during the season and opening them up to 2 meaningless games worth of injuries. Smart idea for an expansion squad (and they'll still lose those games by pretty lopsided scores if I had to wager anyway even with the starters, doing wonders for their marketing machine).

They did. I was the won that demanded playoffs while the majority was satisfied with finishing last which we did.

Our situation was so much different than Seattle's that it is really not worth comparing. As was said earlier, that list of games was pretty much Qwest driven. However, I seem to remember that we are promised the all-star game once we have our new stadium.

If it was Qwest driven what is wrong with the Coliseum and Palo Alto?

According to many on here, there's tons wrong with the Coliseum since it has to be in baseball configuration during the summer.

And we don't have a working relationship with Stanford like we do with the Coliseum. Stanford's rent I suspect would be outrageous in comparison to Oakland.

Which is all besides the point. What would be the benefit to the Quakes to have a top level team like Chelsea come in and kick our asses?

The wow factor of seeing the best players in the world. What more do you want? I want to see a Messi, a Drogba, a Ronaldinho, etc. Also the $$$$ for this club since they really need it.

If there is a lot wrong with Oakland then why are we getting Gold Cup games?

Because no one really cares about the Gold Cup?

As for the wow factor, IMO that wow factor would be blunted when the Quakes (or Seattle in this case) loses by some ridiculous lopsided score. All it would do in the end is make MLS and the Quakes look bad. Hardly a great way to grow the league or team fanbase with more of this Beckhamesque flash in the pan crap.
