You may want to check your stats.. check the goal difference for EVERY team that has won the world cup and tell me it is positive or negative. If it is positive (as they ALL are), it says that the team has a stronger defense than a stronger offense. In other words, the team scores more goals than the other teams score against them. capisce?? LOL
every brazilian squad both argentine squads italian keepers of the 70s maybe, i will give you West Germany's Bodo Illgner (he was the one that nutmegged by Rincon in 1990)... i was a fan of his when he was at real madrid for the most part i will agree with you about good defenses, but good keepers....sure they are sufficient but not neccesary
sorry, but i have to disagree The goalkeeper is technically part of the defense true, you don't need the best goalkeeper in the world cup or a whole championship to be the best team, but you certainly can't have the worse goalkeeper and expect to win anything. Calero was one of the worse goalkeepers in the Copa America 2007, and hence we were one of the worse teams in the tournament. A bad goalkeeper is enough to send a team packing home.. just ask Pachuca.. Calero is WAY past his prime. I am willing to bet money that if Lara puts Calero as our starter goalkeeper he will make mistakes that will cost us points and we won't get to WC2010 with him. (and it is not like we have an easy road ahead)
i dont like him either... he has been past his prime for more than 6 years, but i truely think that was it from him last night and even if it was not, really there are worse things to worry about bc calero can at least do the minimum, he can turn in a clean sheet, whereas all of our fowards fail to do the minimum of what is expected from, i.e score so, i dont see it as an issue because as bad as he is, he is passes the exam but it is a non issue because that was it if bolivia comes and calero is in the starting line up then i will be the first to admit that i was wrong
Actually, i can prove your theory wrong: We have one of the worse offenses in the WC qualifiers, and it is just because of our defense and AGUSTIN JULIO that we are still in the run for WC2010. If it wasn't for Julio and all his saves we would be thinking about WC2014, not WC2010 so i don't think you can say a goalkeeper is not as important if not more important than a good offense.
yes julio has done a lot to keep us in the game, youre right but all anyone from an opposing team has to do against julio is to shoot at his goal from upclose he has no feline point blank instincts....on the other hand, rufai is all point blank instincts feline abilities and no ability to stop long shots and crosses toghether they would make one amazing keeper, which is where ospina comes into the fold.... ospina is excellent with long range shots and crosses and he also has feline qualities at point blank range i would have ospina as No. 1, Julio as No. 2, and Zapata as No.3
Julio stopped some amazing balls in Bolivia where the ball is very fast because of the altitude.. he's also saved a lot of close shots.. overall he's been an amazing, well balanced goalkeeper, except for the mistake he made against Paraguay i'm not sure about Ospina when he comes out.. i saw him make some pretty silly mistakes when he was in Nacional.. i think he needs some more experience in Europe to be #1.. but i think that time will eventually come. another GK which is very good is Breiner Castillo.. he was one of the reasons why Tolima was the best performing team before the octogonals last season

Julio cometio UN SOLO error en todos los partidos de las eliminatorias y nos costo un partido, pero salvo muchisimos otros partidos con sus atajadas, si no fuera por el ya estuvieramos fuera del mundial . Julio = 1 error, muchisimas salvadas. Tal y como lo dije, Lara nos engatuzo a Calero en la seleccion con ese partido contra Haiti.. ese no se va a retirar, aunque ya lo deberia haber hecho hace mucho tiempo. Calero es un arquero en decline. No hace mucho, un error suyo dejo por fuera a Pachuca de la Libertadores, y la semana pasada las Chivas le encajaron 5 goles... y quien se puede olvidar de la goleada que nos metio Paraguay en la Copa America donde se comio varios goles?? Eso de que tenemos que arrodillarnos y aceptar todo lo que decidan los ineptos como Pinto, Maturana y ahora Lara nos tiene por fuera de todos los mundiales. De una cosa estoy seguro: Con Calero como arquero, NO VAMOS a IR A MUNDIAL.
eso ya es una realidad confimada por Lara.. Calerito va a ser titular. Calero detesta a Pinto porque el despues de los goles que se comio contra Paraguay no lo volvio a poner de titular (justamente) y metio a Robinson Zapata para que jugara en el partido contra USA. Calero va a ser titular porque es parte de la rosca de Lara, no porque se lo merezca.
