Yeah but they do give a shit about what France thinks about thier right to secede from Canada. They were all up in arms about Sarkozy's recent statements. But their language is far from Creole. You have to go to Louisianna or Haiti for that.

You say "They" like the entire province was angry at Sarko. The Separatist movement in Quebec is dead. The small number of remaining Soverigntists are just very outspoken.

I wouldn't call it dead, last time such a blanket statement was made was right before the '95 rebirth of the movement and subsequent flop.

There is still a good 25-40% of the population who support separatism at some level or another and I don't think that it will simply turn over and die but rather fade out eventually as a new generation emerges who had not seen the previous oppression. Its definitely slowly losing track but to call it dead would be to undermine its capacity to still make waves as a movement.

They probably get more revenue from their sponsors, who like to see people in the stands, then they do from the additional couple of dollars in non-discounted ticket sales.

It also makes the Impact "seem" bigger, when you say that they're playing at 95% capacity or whatever. I seem to recall a report on MLS padding the attendance in 2006 or so, and it was similar stuff.

Eeeek. I hate it when we say "separatism is dead". It will never die. Support for a sovereign Quebec will rise and fall but it will never totally die and it may very well bounce back and once again threaten the country with partition.

    From MLSRumours:

Additionally, we just received the following anonymous email which seems to back up two earlier reports.

I have a very reliable source within the Montreal Impact front office that tells me that Montreal is almost set to be 1 of the 2 teams that will enter MLS in 2011. Right after he told me so, I heard the news of the possible bid withdrawal from Barcelona Miami. He also stated "We are in active discussions with MLS concerning our possible entry and the way we are gonna pay it..." MLS seems to be very interested in the upcoming concacaf game at the olympic stadium and that could be a sign that what my source told me was indeed true. I wish to remain anonymus because obviously, I was supposed to keep my mouth shut on this matter.

You're quoting MLSRumors? You might as well be asking The Shelts for inside information, or perhaps Donald Rumsfeld and Dick Cheyney for location information on the weapons of mass destruction. Perhaps you will be attending Paris Hilton's symposium on cold nuclear fusion in Atlantis next weekend...

Please, please dudes... This is the opportunity Montreal fans were dreaming of for letting our voices be heard. Anyone going to that game tonight should be willing to chant out loud 'M' 'L' 'S', in 'Go habs go!' style. Can you imagine the message we would pass as fans if we get the whole stadium to chant in? Let's spread the word and do this right before kick-off and all the way through it. Let our voices be heard, it's the chance we were waiting for!!!

    'M' 'L' 'S'!!!! Go Impact!

It's on FSC in the states, and on CBC Bold up in Canada. You can also catch it on tape delay on regular, old CBC.

with 56K sold and a 2-0 victory against last years Mexican Champions, How the MLS are considering Portland, St. Louis and Miami is beyond me. Montreal should have been built a brick walkway to get into the MLS.

MLS needs cities like this, do whatever it takes to have Montreal in this league.
Toronto is an example, Seattle not far behind, giving it to a city like St.Louis or Miami would be another SJ.

Question is, if MTL is able to pull in 50k+, why didn't Saputo have enough confidence in paying the required $40m?

While I don't agree with Saputo's decision not to pay MLS' asking price, i don't see how your question is relevant.

Saputo stadium currently seats 13K, the 55K figure is from the Olympic stadium.

It's relevant. It shows the strength as a football market.

Saputo is still not confident enough to make business case out of it, and pull the trigger.

After last night I am willing to welcome Le Impact de Montreal to the MLS.
Most teams would have shut up shop and stopped playing after the early goal. Montreal kept the pressure on the Mexican side the entire time and deserved the win.

As for the 60,000 people that packed the stands, Montreal did a smart thing. They sold them through school fundraisers and door to door. Some will say this is very Bugs Bunny, but it can create a footprint over time. I wish some of the MLS sides would do this.

Nothing is stopping you from attending MLS games, wearing jerseys, buying flags to hang off your house, using an MLS team licence plate holder, bringing MLS up in conversation with your buddies.

Knowing some of the things Saputo has done in the past, and the type of guy he seems to be, I would argue that it wasn't confidence in the market that made the deal fall through. To me, it seemed more like a question of pride. Saputo thinks a lot of himself, so he thinks that MLS should be bowing down to him, and not the other way around. Garber disagrees. At this point, I don't think it was about the money at all, merely about the power.
