True. Nobody should ever ever ever call a Juninho FK a lucky goal. What they should do is call Valdes unlucky (that's me trying to be nice.)

Anyway, look at this post of mine I found from 2007. ;)

MOTM has to be Marquez, he neutralized Benzema and made the assist for the goal.

Since I'm neutral in the matter, how do you see next season's Champions League final against Köln?
Can the back line of Alves-Puyol-Vidic-Lahm hold off Köln's lethal strike partnership of Podolski and Eto'o (I still can't believe Köln got him on the cheap) or do you expect Asenjo becoming another victim of the "Etolski" strike rate of 4+ goals per match?
    :p

Imagine if that did happen, even for one match at least? Some sort of Big Soccer contest that Barcelona participates in. It would probably be an early round Copa Del Rey match. Lucho would be required to go and cheer for Hendrix at whatever second division team's stadium that Barcelona were playing at....let's just forecast that it would be against Espanyol. :p

I wish I could just post this still picture. Look at it as it loads. It's absurd that the ball is going to go into the goal once Juninho kicks it. Those goals are always the result of the goalkeeper having one idea and refusing to let it go in the face of reality.

This one was a lot more difficult to stop than the Ronaldinho FK against England. The R10 FK was swerving in towards play while the Juninho one looked like a cross into the box initially and then swerved towards goal.

You can't blame Valdes here and none of you would be if you weren't still bitter about the Espanyol game. It was a brilliant FK, one of the best you'll ever see. Of course some 'keepers would've come close to stopping it wheras VV was nowhere near the ball and made a fool of himself. But in the end that doesn't matter. Unstoppable!

    Agreed!

A yellow was fair. Messi over-reacted.

Yeah but Lyon dominated the first-half. You should be very happy with a 1-1 draw.

What about it? what does that have to do with Juninho's brilliant goal? Im talking about Lyon vs Barcelona.

What is your definition of Dominated, Dominate, Domination?

Hey guys, long time not been on this boards.

But what is going on with Valdes, the disaster Saturday night and last night's error.I guess everyone goes through a bad patch at some time but we cannot afford a low confidence keeper at this critical phase of the season.

I saw Valdes very nervous after that goal. Every CK or FK you could see him hesitate. Unfortunately, there's not much we can do about it right now. Txiki can do something for next season though.:D

Fair point, but I don't know that Juninho even tries that FK if it isn't VV in goal. I mean, he probably does try it on 3 out of 5 keepers, maybe that ratio is higher because it's a CL game, but against an elite keeper, maybe he elects to cross it into the box.

However, the real issue is the nagging perception that VV isn't a quality enough goalkeeper for the status of a club of Barcelona's size. Whether that shot was unstoppable or not, it doesn't help that perception when he takes those awkward steps forward and watches it sail helplessly over him.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that we will never know if any goalkeeper alive could have stopped a Juninho special, but it sure does look certain that VV had no chance of stopping it.

And believe me, I'm pleased as punch that FCB got the away goal and it ended in a tie. You can check back on any predictions I made through this last run through La Liga, I never take goals for granted! (OK, maybe a couple times. But just a couple. :D)

The problem with Valdes on the Juninho goal wasn't him saving it, that's besides the point. The main issue is he looked at the pretty colours on the ball and let it arch over him whilst he fell into the net. In essence he didn't even try to save it, if he did no one can say anything but the fact of the matter is he isn't good enough to be no.1, he'd be a good no.2. A complete mistake of a man.

Not exactly a performance from a club being labeled as "The Best Team in Europe" that I was hoping for but after the two last la liga results I'll take this result, especially after getting dominated for stretches in the first half and going down a goal. With the nervous defense we displayed I was releived to go into the half only conceeding one goal. Going into the second half it was telling that after Henry's goal that Lyon didn't seem to have any different style to display, summed up by Derek Rae saying "they don't have another gear". They hardly showed any attack whatsoever and for me completely showed a lackluster performance compared to their first half.

    le sigh.

it seems my frustrations with the game are felt by everyone else.

Let's be honest here...if the team scores 2 or more goals, then the VV blunder is looking a lot less important. Lyon pulled off the textbook "Beat Barcelona" game plan to a T:

    • Play physical (with lots of little fouls)
    • Apply pressure
    • Play the passing lanes
    • Execute effective counter attacks
    • Have a keeper that plays out of his mind
    • MOST IMPORTANTLY: score first

Eto'o frustrated me...but so did a bunch of other guys. I sincerely hope these dudes get their act together....once or twice is a coincidence....three bad games in a row is turning into a habit.

I'm just glad we got the away goal.

    Is that you, Alphonse??? :D

Good list. Also, le blame is also on le schedule. Everyone's looking a little tired. I think we need a rest for MEH and have Bojan and Keita and (gulp) Guddy get a start perhaps. Like Pep did in the first 6 or 7 rounds of La Liga.

    Guddy Keita
    Hleb Henry Bojan

Then MEH it up at halftime or 60 minutes.

Agreed. I was screaming at the TV for Pep to sub Eto'o for Bojan or (dear God I can't believe I'm about to say this, please have mercy on my soul) Guddy.

Dude just did NOT have it tonight. Messi didn't either.

I think the combination of fatigue and the kind of pressure Lyon was applying really hampered Barcelona in the worst way.

Ahh well, I have full confidence that the team will be able to hold Lyon off at the Camp Nou. They won't have the home crowd or the energy (IMO) to put up another 90 minutes of pressure like they did at home.

True, and remember this was a Lyon starting XI that for the most part had the weekend off duty while our boys played an exhausting derby, mostly with 10 men.

We've looked tired since the int'l break. Injuries to Iniesta and Abidal haven't helped either. Unfortunately, Atletico is no place to bench the big guns.

i don't really know if its the fatigue factor... given the fact that we had a much better second half and it was Lyon who looked the tired side. that's despite the fact that most of Lyon's starting 11 were able to rest last weekend, while and messi and friends played the full 90 against espanyol. that's a testament to our superior conditioning. also i dont think Pep will do a lot of squad rotation in the next few games, although we can still afford to do so. i think he'll try to play the starters as much as possible until we get back on the winning track.

I wonder how the real fans are feeling right now, having to watch that old man raul put an end to their european dreams each year for the past 5 if we are going with history, the guy is rubbish but only the real fans who haven't noticed it yet or won't admit it.

If your post is any indication, the Real fans feel like coming in the Barça forum and letting their frustrations cloud any ability to post coherently. Wanna try again?

I have been saying this since I don't remember when! VV can be a good bus driver!

He did extremely well the first half of the season (for an average goal keeper) but now you can see why we need world class keeper just like the ones top European teams have. A goal keeper can decide a game, proof? Iker last season! Barca is doing well having home growing players to play for the first team but VV is our weakest link.

Bojan should have played instead of Eto'o but I'm sure eto'o being subbed again, he won't take it lightly! Actually I don't see any players complain once they are subbed but eto'o! does he understand that he should give a space for young players to develop and being part of a big team you assume that you won't play full game each time?

Anyway, Lyon is not a threat, probably we will be the only spanish team that will make it to the next round!

Messi played brilliantly for Argentina against France and hasn't been great since he came back. He seems to get a bit too frustrated recently. I suppose it's understandable. If Crynaldo or anybody else was getting quadruple marked, I'm sure they'd be just as frustrated. The problem is that we're failing to use the space he opens up. Mainly because Eto'o is a donkey. He may have scored a lot of goals but you can't trust him to put away the simple chances. That's the problem with being a donkey.
