Was he even injured or was he just rested so he can be in top form? That's what gets me about Benitez's Liverpool. Screw trying to win the league you haven't in two decades, rest the guy then play him in 3 days for a CL tie. That is not the kind of mentality I want coaching Madrid. Juande saying "go all out for Betis, then we'll get to Liverpool" is however.
Babel's pace could be a worry, especially in the last 15 minutes and if we're going after a goal. As things stand, with Gerrard being unfit, Torres having a poor record against us, the only true threat is Alonso.
Even if Stevie "the diving" Gerrard (TM) wasn't injured, he'd still be losing a lot of match fitness missing all those games.
I just have this gut feeling that he went out with the supposed injury just so Liverpool wouldn't have to take the chance of him getting injured with the national team. One bullet dodged. They knew they didn't have to play an FA cup match so would be getting extra rest. They had a weak portsmouth and mancity at home, so better to dodge those seemingly easy matches and make sure your star plays. Two bullets dodged. Yeah I know, conspiracy theorist. Can you blame me? The past four years haven't been kind. My only hope. I hope we mop the floor with him and their "tournament only" coach.
You know what I love about this nickname? Between Cannavaro, Pepe, and Heinze, we are apt to see a LOT of our players in Gerrard's face coming up from taking dives which weren't called. I LOVE the intensity, especially from Heinze and Cannavaro, getting in diver's faces like they're about to go 10th round Rocky Balboa on their booty!
Old red nose drunk again attacks our club. His obsession with Madrid is heart warming. I hope Inter knocks manu out, we knock liverpool out, then Benitez (being forced to actually compete in his league! Tragic!) actually gives them a run for that handover a premiership title this season.
http://www.rediff.com/sports/2003/apr/08foot.htm This might reduce your hatred for ferguson. It just might.
Well Madrid fans are singing his praises at least... Don't know why he's not a more well known player tbh. He oozes class and elegance and should be more famous than he is.
Hatred? Kids these days... I dislike and like to make fun of the red nosed drunk. I don't hate him. What that post did not do is make me like you more.
Good move by Ramos to hold closed training sessions for the next couple of days. We’ve been prone to get distracted by outside influence ahead of the big matches. One thing is for sure, unlike last year, Real Madrid will not be outcoached in this tie. Both coaches are bright, and have vast experiences in these kinds of competitions.
I wouldn't take Torres' goal scoring record against us too seriously. He was a younger, much less mature player back then. He has blossomed into one of the best strikers in the world since he moved to Liverpool. What is actually encouraging is his poor scoring form in the past few games. Alonso, if he starts, will be very influential player for them. He is one of the most undervalued players in Liverpool, and why they seemingly attempt to rid of him almost every summer is beyond me.
Plus, wearing an Atleti shirt dooms you to failure in hilarious fashion when it comes to playing Real Madrid. It's crossing the whole League history, pretty comical to be honest.
What I really dont want to see is Alonso getting time and space outside our box for one of them rockets he likes to pull off.
Not really, towards the end of his time with Atleti Torres had 5 years in Primera under his belt, which for most other players is the equator of their careers. I don't think Torres has "blossomed." He's made progress, to be sure, but I don't see it as dramatic or anything like that. He's had a very bad time with muscle injuries this season. He can always score here and there, but his game has no rhythm. I suspect that, for him, this is going to be one of those 'lost' seasons when by the time he's 100% either it won't matter or the season will already be over.
Torres has become a much more mature player in the year and a half he has spent away from Atletico. He did have 5 years of Primera experience, but lets not forget that he started when he was 17 or 18, and then was made club captain two years later at the mere age of 19. It's a bit unfair to say that he was given a proper development in Ateltico. He was given so much responsibility at such a critical age. At no point in his Atletico career was he considered to be one of the top 10 strikers in the world. Removed from all that pressure and responsibility and surrounded with similar talent, he has become a much more lethal player than he was ever in his career. I think, during his time at Atletico, many would say that he was a player with tremendous unfulfilled potential. Now, I don't think I can name more than two or three strikers that I would place before him. He had never scored more than 21 goals in a season prior to last season. He moves to Liverpool and knocks in 33. That's no coincidence.
