This is perfect. You are implying Mexican club teams are superior to MLS on a Revs board - with a Superliga reference in the same sentence. Oh man, thanks I needed a good chuckle!

yep your right, the mexican leagues got that over us.

And what does it mean when he's able to score at a greater rate in Italy than MLS?

There were plenty of people who thought that a) Beckham would walk all over MLS or b) be washed up. Guess what? Neither was true. A Beckham that can still play at the highest levels wasn't able to just carve up MLS defenses.

Seems to me that the difference between MLS and (better) leagues is tactical rather than athletic. As a result, one player from Europe, however special, generally wouldn't dominate here, whereas a whole team most likely would.

So Beckham, without a supporting cast of creative attackers to make the runs, etc., isn't enough. He's good for the occasional pinpoint pass, or beautiful free kick, but that's about it.

Works in the other direction, too: consider how effective Brian McBride was for Fulham, given that he was pretty frequently shut down by journeymen defenders (e.g., Pierce) when playing for the Crew just previous. That's no knock on McBride, it was just interesting to me how successful he was over there given his good, but not outstanding stats here.

Which explains why European coaches have been so successful in MLS. Superior tactics. Just ask Frank Stapleton.

Which explains why soccer is such an interesting sport: the in-game tactics are determined by the players on the field more than the coach, who can generally only affect things indirectly.

Some coaches aren't good at it, some have little to work with in terms of the tactical awareness of the players he has. The instinct to do the right thing in a dynamic situation and the ability to instill that sort of instinct through training are very different things, which is why some of the best players have not been good managers and why some of the best managers were not top-level players.

oh you mean the same frank stapleton who brought bradford all the way down to the 3rd division? wow, that is quite a red herring you've found.

    bump again

According to anonymous people in the comments section of an article about this on Soccernet, Beckham leaving means MLS has failed.

He actually had a pretty good supporting cast on offense (including Bayern Munich's 3rd forward!) - it was their defense that stunk.

There were some predictions that if LA got a free kick around the area, you could ring one up on the scoreboard.
The same people will probably say that MLS has failed even if he doesn't leave.

You nailed it about LA's porous defense. LA had Carlos Ruiz, Donovan and Beckham but then there was a massive dropoff which resulted in them missing the playoffs.

As far as the people saying 'MLS has failed', what exactly are they using for their measuring stick? I'd be interested to find out how they define "failure."

Anyone who thinks MLS has "failed" regardless of anything short of the whole league going belly-up in its entirety, is a Gade A, King of the Hill, Top of the Heap Idiot. End of story.

LA were bad because of a lot of reasons. Yes, they had some pretty good players in Beckam's entire time there, including Joe Canon in goal and several players who had earned US caps, not to mention Donovan, who, as painful as it is to admit, is the best American player today. They were crap because they were managed by idiots who were still stuck in the 1996 mentality of "big names" instead of solid mid-level Americans. You need a bunch of good, solid players at the Jay Heaps/Jeff Laretowicz level who make mid-level money. The Gals only had guys making either top or bottom dollar, with little in between.

ha...I love that it's "until July", which gives him about a month in MLS, then the August transfer window sends him back to mighty Europe

Beckham apparently also intends to exercise his contract's option to own an MLS franchise after his playing days are over. I sense Jordan/Wizards fail.

Not to mention that even if he ends up staying with the Galaxy for part of August, which I doubt because the deal is probably already done to send him back to Milan, he'll end up playing for England during that time.

Don't worry - we won't even have the chance to see him once he comes back. LA is suppossed to play Revs at home on Aug 8th, and England has a game on Aug 9th. (unless Capello does not call Beckham in)

and US has WC Qualifier on that Sunday as well.

Whoops - my bad. The US Qualifier is on that Wed 8/12.

And I cannot find a specific schedule for that England game - it came up as a graphic during one of the ESPN updates concerning this - but I am wondering if it was wrong/inaccurate.

    Guess we will see.
