ABC did not air WWC trophy presentation After the Women's World Cup Final ended, ABC decided not to air the trophy presentation because 1: The game ended past 3 PM ET, 2: They were obligated to head out to golf during that hour after the game ended and 3: It would have taken 20 minutes for the trophy presentation to start and ABC didn't have time to wait 20 minutes. Thoughts? BTW Could someone please post the TV ratings and how many people watched on TV the 3rd place match and the WWC Final as soon as the info is released. Thanks
Re: ABC did not air WWC trophy presentation I saw the trophy presentation. You did not miss much. Germany pick up most of the of silverware. Sweden players look really sad when they got their medals. Germany player were all very happy. The stadium was half empty, most ot the people left, I would have left also, I was rooting for Sweden. Being total selfish, the presenation would be a 1,000 times better if the championship medals were hanging around the Team USA players' necks.
jp: the usual. i still want derek rae or mike hill (or bob ley, and i know he wants it but has to sit on OTL), but he gets the job done. wendy: the best thing about the olympics is that the first retirement pushes her out of the booth. probably for chastain or foudy. di cicco: someone had a muzzle on him because he was real ready to rip april during the germany game and couldn't. shame on the puppeteers. heather: got the job done, much more so in the looks department than the speaking skills department. terry gannon: very, very impressive. smooth delivery and seems to have really done his homework about the game since "victoria" paysee's feature on david beckham last year during england-sweden. can show rob stone the exit sign at his convenience as studio host for any soccer on ABC. jorge ramos: seemed to have a hairball on lilly's goal against sweden, otherwise i guess that's just his style. the woman whose name i can't remember: so-so. i guess you're not gonna get all that many people to do that sort of thing in spanish at this point. monica gerardo would have been nice? pablo: superb. either did his homework or did a very good job of disguising any lack of knowledge. called it straightforward and simple and that's just fine for me. and the "GOLAAAAAAAAAZO AZO AZO" is always welcome on my TV. mayorga: i don't know much spanish but at the very least he respected the level of play and gave it a fair shake. seemed genuinely impressed by the play of the better teams, especially prinz's volley against argentina.
JP: Quality stuff. Mitts: Terrible - mute the TV when you see her! Among the pronounciation gaffes: Lunenberg, Swensson, and numerous others. Tony: Arrogant pr!ck, wanted to give coaching advice to everyone. Apparently, he's the best coach ever to walk on water. Just ask him. Wendy: Irritating. A step behind the entire time, lacking insightful commentary. Biased. Tisha: Bland. Not good, not bad. The rest - no complaints.
Did anyone tape the weekend matches (I guess you did, Jonathan!)? My VCR recorded ABC Family Channel instead of Telefutura. Olson Twins! AACK!!!!! I wonder if Pablo Raimirez achieved golazorgasm on the game-winner! (And, dcajedi, I guess Jorge Ramos called the bronze-medal match? He seems to have hairballs all the time!)
JP: The gold standard for US soccer announcers. A - in this tournament, because he wouldn't press Wendy for analysis. Wendy: Not critical, or even very analytical, of the USWNT's choice of tactics or substitution patterns. Many of her player evaluations (both of Founders, younger players and foreign teams) were hard to agree with. Didn't show much familiarity with non-WUSA players on teams other than the US. For me, she just seems to lack credibility, like she isn't being completely forthright about what she is seeing. C -. Tony: OK, so he's a bit full of himself (After all, he did win the Olympic Gold Medal and the WWC). But he is very very good at dissecting tactics. For example, his commentary on the China games was very insightful. He laid their flaws bare. A -. Tisha: I liked her. Sideline reporter is an unforgiving gig. Not many people do it well, and she did quite well for a rookie. Solid B. Beth Mowins: Much better with Tony than with Anson, who just preferred to clown around in the booth and talk only in coach-speak. The best soccer PBP I've heard her do. She put her knowledge of the WUSA to very good use. Excellent broadcasts of the China matches in group play. B +. Erika Herskowitz (sp?): She seems very nice, but she was in over her head. D. Tom Stone: Not bad, really. He has a lot of personality and enthusiasm for the game. He overpowered poor Erika, however, in the one game I heard them do. C. STUDIO: Terry Gannon: ABC's go-to guy for Olympic sports like figure skating and track and field. He's always solid and well-prepared. B +. Rob Stone: The "puppy dog" of the Mouse Ears family of networks. Very enthusiastic. But sometimes he gets overly enthused and just seems to slobber all over the set. B -. Heather: Well, as an outside defender for the Charge, she's great. And we all know she's easy on the eyes. But she needs a lot of work. Stop blinking, for one thing. Enunciate. This is all basic stuff. Substantively, you can't expect to hear any kind of biting analysis from a person who hopes to be on the next Olympic team. She's in no position to question April or the team leaders. C - for a game performance in an impossible situation.
This may be borderline heresy to some of you , but I prefer Jack Edwards and Ty Keogh... She went out on quite the limb and sauteed Heinrichs' decision to put four injured players on her WWC roster at halftime of the Germany-Argentina game. That took ball$ to do. Said in as many words that the lack of depth would eventually come back to haunt the U.S. And it did. Paul
ABC's coverage of the final got a 1.4 rating in overnight Nielsen TV numbers, an 89% decline from the '99 final, per Rudy Martzke of USA Today in this morning's edition. Paul
As it did in 2000. What did they do, use something like 14 or 15 players for five matches in about a 13 day span? I'm still awaiting justification for Carla Overbeck being included on that roster.
Pretty much in line with most people's expectations. I expected a 10 rating if the US were involved, but a 1 rating if the US were not. The final rating should be around 1.0 or so, give or take 20%.
Link to the article: http://www.usatoday.com/sports/baseball/playoffs/2003-10-14-tv-ratings_x.htm This article doesn't say how many amercians watched the final on ABC.
Actual Numbers Please So what would be the estimate then of the ABC audience size for the WC Final? Was it more or less than 1 million total? Sorry if this was mentioned before, but since I normally don't pay very close attention to television ratings, a rating of 1.4 doesn't mean very much to me unless I know how many people a rating of 1.0 represents. I have to say that even though I am far from fluent in Spanish, I really enjoyed the matches that I got to watch on TeleFutura and Galavision. I really liked the fact that Univision coverage included the national anthems of both teams. I also look forward to watching the German coverage of the WC Final including the trophy presentation after I receive the video from one of my good friends in Germany.
Re: Actual Numbers Please One rating point equals, I believe, about 1.03 million viewers, according to Nielsen's ratings. So figure about 1 1/2 million Americans saw the final. Paul
Re: Actual Numbers Please This is more or less an approximation....every.1 roughly equals 100,000 viewers. So 1.4 is probably hovering around the 1.4 million viewer mark...give or take. But that should be a decent ballpark figure.
Germany and Sweden An article from the KC Star. The first part is about Julie Foudy and the WUSA. The second part is about the television reception of the WWC in Germany and Sweden and a (deserved) swipe at SI. http://www.kansascity.com/mld/kansa...0@yahoo.com&KRD_RM=5utqrqnnuontussqllllllllll|Jo|Y
