He received a yellow against Guatemala in the first game of the last round.... then didn't receive one @Cuba, Trinidad and Tobago, and then home against Cuba.

He didn't play @Trinidad and Tobago or home against Guatemala.

So he gets one now and is still suspended?

What exactly are the rules on this?

I'm not sure what the exact rule is...but the ref didn't help Timmy out any seeing as how he had just taken a blow to his knee. Had Tim laid down, he could've easily killed off two or three minutes. Instead, he tries to walk it off and gets a yellow. That's crappy.

He got the yellow for throwing the ball away towards the corner.

Not pleased he'll miss the el salvador match, but, all things equal, it's not the biggest thing which might have come out of this match. and, for what it's worth, i thought that this was a minor issue in the officiating and not terribly onerous; especially with some of the nonsense to which the US has been subjected in the past!

I'm pretty sure that two yellows at any point during qualifying means you're suspended for the next game. I do know that they carried over from the last round into this one. The slates will of course be wiped clean after qualifying is over, so no carryover into the WC itself.

I was looking for the exact language on FIFA's site but oddly I cannot find it.

He got it for running up to take the free kick, then stopping and backing away.

That was my interpretation. I thought Tim stopped because the ref was issuing the yellow.

Showing yellow for throwing the ball away would be even more poor, if that's the case. Tim threw the ball before Batres had even settled the issue with Marquez, so it had no effect on delaying the game.

Yes, he did. I just re-watched the game and the replay showed what live-action showed: Howard ran up to take the kick, then stopped. Batres then pulled the card out, Howard sort of waved, then kicked the ball.

Wasn't this the similar to what happened in the Argentina game - a second yellow for throwing the ball away while Argentina was subbing?

Getting Guzan some experience in a hostile environment might not be such a bad thing.

Terrific. Guzan or somebody gets a game. This is good.

I think the yellow was for time wasting (i.e. not taking the kick), not for throwing the ball away.

On the other hand, how does Oswaldo not get a yellow for hoofing the ball into the stands after Bradley's goal?

Edited to add a quote from USSoccer.com:

My take was that he took the run-up to test out his leg before he took that actual kick, and the ref interpreted that as time-wasting. He was still walking around pretty gingerly up to that point (as well as afterwards).

Guzan can handle the job. He's stuck behind Friedel, but has looked pretty good in his starts in the Uefa Cup.

    I agree.

He took a run up to test his leg but when he did not kick the ball the ref pulled the yellow for wasting time.

I very poor decision by the ref considering Howard had just been spiked so bad the ref deemed it a red card.

Now let me ask... where did you read that it was for throwing the ball away? I say this because, no intelligent person could watch the game and think that THAT was the reason for the card. It looked crystal clear to everyone that it was for time wasting when he refused to take the goal kick fast enough, but you seem confident in something that seems completely implausable, so you must have read it somewhere. Where?

We've all played enough football to know that most often, yellows are given for an accumulation of infractions perceived by the match official. Howard throwing the ball away could have been seen by the officials as an infraction allowed to go unpunished and then Batres acted when adding the two (or maybe more) time wasting acts as enough to warrant a card.

I still think Tim should've hit sat down and let the trainers come tend to him. It would've given him time to recoup and he wouldn't have drawn a card. I've reffed before, and there's no place in my book for a card like the one given to Timmy.
