So to combine the two trades and removing Gomez

    Rapids sent:
    DP slot for 1 year
    2009 1st round pick
    Mike Graczyk
    International spot
    Part of Gomez' salary

    Rapids got:
    Ivan Guerrero
    2010 2nd Round pick
    Salary Cap considerations

and 3 goals and 6 assists in 2009.

I'll give Bravo, Smith, and/or Plush credit. Not a bad recovery from an awful original trade.

Anyone think the Rapids will actually use the DP slot this time?

    *Raises hand*

I think they will in the summer transfer window. There are a lot of solid players on free transfers this upcoming window. That or they fork out money to sign some notable players who have said they won't mind playing in the US!

Who knows, the Rapids most likely won't use it!

I'd give it better odds than another Obama nomination with tax problems. :D

So not a bad deal. Rapids get a two way producing player. Who makes 150kish. Most DC fans are very disappointed by the trade!

Just to clarify, the official release fromt he Rapids does have Graczyk but does not have Colorado getting the originally reported salary cap considerations. The blogger who posted that news on the DC board has said that he misidentified Colorado as getting the considerations when it was actually DC (in the form of us paying part of Gomez' salary).

All in all, a decent move to recover from a bad situation.

Many on the DCU side seem very upset by the deal, many sorry to see Guerrero go.

A backline of Guerrero - Gibbs - Harden - Ugo could be a definite improvement over last year (although Guerrero will lose a good bit of time playing for Honduras in WC qualifiers).

That's when Harvey's long term deal will come in handy.

Let's just hope this isn't another Jose Burciaga Jr. acquisition.

Ivan Guerrero is a good player. He is clever. He has speed. He can cross. And he is feisty. He can play LB or LM. He immediately becomes Rapids 1st choice LB.

Gomez leaving probably relieves Emperor Smith of lotsa heartburn. However, he brought it on himself by behaving so immaturely.

The Rapids will not use a DP slot in 2009. And a 2nd round draft pick for a 1st round pick is never a good deal.

Nevertheless the Rapids got a 1st choice player in the transaction and have diimmed the Gomez reflection from their slate. Still there is the money. $$$ are probably a wash with Guerrero ~$150,000.00 + ~ $200,000.00 to cover Gomez. Bad deals are never full recovered. But a fresh start!!!

I'm glad everyone else is happy about Gurrero, because I don't ever remember being all too impressed with him.

Though maybe I'm mixing him and Perralta(?) up a bit...

WJMarx I agree with you. The money part of this doesn't make it an ideal situation. However, if we have the DP spot back, maybe Smith has a big move up his sleeve. Michael Owen might be done with Newcastle. We can only dream.

Getting someone who can start and bolster our back line is always a good thing. The skeptic in me cautions that Burciaga was supposed to be a starter too. We will have to see.

    40 days to go...

Burciaga was kind of big and slow, not much of a defender, or much of a defenders mentality (scrappy, fiesty). On the bright side he did have a helluva left foot.

Guerrero has speed, grit, and class. He's playing at a high enough level to be in the mix for WC qualifying in the Hex. He can play LM or LB. Both well.

He's not Burciaga Jr. (you guys got fleeced on that one).

Mostly I'm excited that something actually happened. The last couple of weeks have been excruciating with the team in Commerce City and NO real info coming from the Rapids. It seems Guerrero has had his problems however. I believe we are his 4th club in two years. Does anyone recall the circumstances of all those moves?

LB was a problem for us last year and the opportunity to use a DP slot on a striker (wishful thinking) sounds like an excellent move. Plus anyone who gets to play with Palacios on Honduras is super sweet.

Good News! But I disagree with Marx and I disagree with Hibbie. We may very well use the DP slot in the summer transfer window if a good goal scorer is available who wants to be here. I don't understand why people keep saying we need help in the back (Guerrero, Gibbs, Ugo, Hardin, Harvey, Kimura), plus a quality keeper. Ever thought about what happens when Casey gets hurt and Omar is out with Jamaica?

He left us via the expansion draft. Osorio wasn't all that familiar with him and didn't protect him because of age and salary, despite the protests from the assistant coaches. It's another thing that Fire fans are bitter about from the Osorio era.

Guerrero is a quiet guy who will always work hard. Don't worry, he won't be another Burciaga.

Of course you are kidding or stupid? Until 3 weeks ago, no Pickens, no Hardin & no Guerrero. That is why there was deep concern regarding Rapids backline! The concern has eased, but, still fragile Gibbs, mediocre Ihemelu, and largely untested Kimura & Harvey.

Wow, this beat my expectations for this trade, that is for sure. I'm impressed that the Rapids were able to land a player of Guerrero's quality when it was widely known that they really just wanted to get Gomez off of the roster. Granted, I think this means that the Rapids probably are paying the lion's share of Gomez's salary this year.

Guerrero was solid and consistent for DC. Definitely better than Peralta, who started strong for DC, but became a liability as the season wore on.

The Rapids have made some lemonade here out of a pretty sour batch of lemons. Obviously, this trade's real impact will be assessed as the season wears on, but on paper, the Rapids solidified their defense, got rid of a depreciating asset, and regained a bargaining chip in the form of their DP slot (whether they use it or trade it, or sit on it - my money's on the latter).

We can thank Marcelo Gallardo for sucking, that is for sure. This doesn't happen if he's fit and ready to play for DC this year. Vaya con Dios, Marcelo. He had some good moments, but definitely wasn't worth the price tag.

Marx ... Well, I wasn't kiddidng, and last time I checked there was still a rattling in my head. Granted there is less concern in the back now that we know Hardin is on board, Gibbs is on the mend, Ihemulo is not mediocre, and Harvey and Kimura had more starts at their respective positions than anyone else last year (I think). Oh, and Guerrero time will tell, but something tells me he will be a real contributor when he's not playing with Honduras - a team I think has a very good chance of going to the World Cup. You haven't said anything about the great depth we have up front, or did I miss something? (rattle-rattle)

My apologies for the icon, I did just click on the picture without reading the pass-over (snide)
