It appears money is money. I just think it is funny because the team is probably forbidden from rafting in their contracts. I suppose office employees can go.
Doesn't look like we'll have a jersey sponsor any time soon. http://www.denverpost.com/rapids/ci_11577205 If we're fairly close to the same place we were last season, that means no sponsor.
I know the thinking on the sponsor is to make a good financial transaction. I hope the Rapids look at it more as a branding deal. Make some money, by all means, but also make certain that the advertisement your asking your players, staff, and fans to wear is one that they were not unlikely to wear anyway.
Dick's sells a wide variety of kayaks, canoes and a lot of related equipment useful for 'rapids', they also sell soccer gear for all ages and in Colorado they have/had a decent selection of Rapids gear (not so much elsewhere though). River Runners whitewater rafting company sells river rafting trips that I'm sure do involve 'rapids' but their connection to the Rapids seems contrived/tenuous at best? Fly fishing guide service next (at least the players would be allowed to participate)? They already have had skiing lift ticket combination deals I believe.
Who knows what the right sponsor is! To me it seems like a family driven sponsor that families know in the Rocky Mountain region. Too me thats bullsh|t. But I guess its money. Focus on the Family < Qwest Haha
It won't be Qwest. Apparently the Rapids haven't built a relationship with them- despite the fact that every other professional sports team in town is getting major advertising dollars from Qwest.
Frontier Airlines... we could be the start of their coming out of Bankruptcy spending spree! Each shirt can have a different animal on it. It would add to the exciting mascots we have. We could have tons of new mascots. Wow, we could also do a rock-paper-scissors contest at 1/2 time each and every game.
http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/g...uniforms/sports_alltime_ugliest_uniforms.html Glad to see the NASL isn't forgotten! In @ #8 & your fav @ #9. I wonder if somewhere in South Africa, Jomo has this jersey in a frame on his wall! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Colorado_Caribous_players http://www.daylife.com/topic/Jomo_Sono/photos/this_month/1
No Doubt. Maybe Plush should work out deal with the Rapids as a shirt sponsor to the team and use money to upgrade the roster! Have the Rapids been charging the state of Colorado for all the advertising the state has been getting from the shirts? There's got to be a couple hundred dollars right there.
$2-3 million a year for the Amway shirts? Really? If that's the going rate, why the hell isn't Jeff Plush seeking the same sort of deal? I don't care if it's a non-Colorado/Rocky Mountain region company... $2-3 million covers the majority of the player contracts for the season. $2-3 million sounds high, but if that is indeed the going rate, Plush doesn't have the luxury of being picky/finding the right match. To me, his response that "There have been offers but they are waiting for the right match for the Rapids" really says, "There haven't been many offers and none of them approach the $2-3 million a year range." Short of a condom company or something else in poor taste, $2-3 million a year should be a no-brainer for the Rapids.
I don't get why so many people are upset that Colorado doesn't have a jersey sponsorship yet. Do you really want them to make a bad decision that will last for the next 3+ years. I'd rather have them wait a year and then get a decent sponsor. I would be much less likely to get a Rapids jersey with an "Amway" type company on the front.
My thinking as well. Traditional American sports fans don't really "get" the sponsorship on the Jersey thing and to put a company like Amway, which is already the butt of so many jokes, on the jerseys would just be embarrassing! What's wrong with "Colorado"? I love Colorado and am proud to have it across my chest when I put on a Rapids Jersey. There is NO chance I would ever buy a shirt that said "Amway" or "Best Buy" across the front. Chipotle however... yum!
I'm only upset if they are looking the other way after being offered $2-3 million. There's a number, a line at which it makes sense to take the money regardless of who the sponsor is (within reason). Amway's a joke, so what? San Jose is going to see $7-9 million dollars over the next three years that the Rapids won't. You can't tell me that wouldn't affect the bottom line for the Rapids. To me, it just tells me that the Rapids probably haven't gotten an offer that approaches that kind of money.
I hear ya. SKE isn't in this for the love of the game. The goal of any business is to make money. If they are offered enough money I'm sure they will take it. They should, but I just don't understand the desire for the fans to see them sell advertising space on the jerseys. The fans won't see the money. They won't spend an extra $2 million on players. They won't give out 285,000 free $7 beers. Perhaps I'm ignorant in the ways of the business of soccer but what good does it do the FANS to have some cheesy advertising on the front of a shirt?
I like the Frontier suggestion above for a jersey sponsor. You would also think that "Coors" would be an awesome sponsor, I guess one side or the other is not interested. I would buy a Coors jersey. What about "Rocky's Autos"? they advertise all over the place. Or maybe one of Stan's other sport teams could sponsor the Rapids, our jerseys could say "Denver Nuggets" on them.
Maybe they don't they spend $2M/year on players, but having the extra revenue makes it far more likely that they spend more than they are now.
I believe that people get upset because it is just another indication that the Rapids haven't gained the following in the communtiy that many in these boards would like them to have. It says that no company finds the Rapids 'worth' spending $1 - $2 million per year placing advertising on their shirts. If you look at the 4 remaining teams without jersey sponsors: KC, Dallas, NE & Colorado, all are in a similar situation in terms of community support. We're not necessarily doing horrible, but we aren't generating the 20,000 rabid fans per game that places like Toronto, DC, LA do. So, companies will be hesitant to fork over a ton of dough for advertising if they believe it won't reach a wide enough audience.
Doesn't the MLS salary cap prevent the Rapids from spending significantly more money on salary? Without a DP slot, more money for salary is a non-issue! I really don't think it would effect the "on field" team in any way. If they sunk extra revenue into youth academies, scouting, advertising or the PR Department.... that would be great! I'm afraid, however, that there is no reason to believe that any of that would happen. Personally, I'm delighted that the Rapids haven't pimped out the front of their shirts to pad SKE's bottom line. I think it shows some class on their part. With the current business environment I know it won't last for long but I hope we can hold on to a classy "Colorado" across the front for as long as possible!
Actually that was a mistake in an article. Its 2-3 a year for 3 years. Correct, the only thing this money could be spent on in terms of player signings is a DP, which we don't have a slot for.
Interesting article here on the San Jose jersey sponsorship deal, which takes a good macro view of why the sponsorship deal was an uncommonly good deal, considering the other factors influencing the world economy.
An inside source told me that Coors is one of the companies that has been in negotiations. I'd be fine with that.
I think Coors would be great as a shirt sponsor so long as they don't remove the Tecate from the beer vendors.
