Davies had to shield the ball against a central defender, who was bigger than him and had the benefit of closing on him, since passes weren't into space where both players would have had to make runs but into feet. So, to extend the football analogy, this was closer to an underthrown ball to a WR, where a safety can read the QB and break on the ball as it is delivered and then either hammer the receiver or intercept the pass. As I said on the US "attack" thread - against tightly packed defenses, passes have to go into a corner for a quick chase. Long/medium passes into feet rarely produce results because the player immediately gets double-triple teamed, even if he is able to settle the ball. To wit : Hiddink sat his fast winger Bystrov vs. Spain (Torpinski was suspended) for Saenko and played into Arshavin's feet against a set Spanish defense and Andrei had no room to operate. Russia was shut out. But when Arshavin had space, he was killing the opposition. The same player. Different tactics.
I think this is the more important point-- sure I think Bob didn't do Charlie any favors with the tactics (but Charlie will have to learn to adapt to that-- he's not good enough to build a team around him), but that doesn't change the fact that no one ever passed him the ball in a dangerous sitution. Except for that 3v2 break where Charlie made a total hash of it. Then again, I hesitate to blame Charlie too much because I too expected Ching to pass the ball to the OPEN player, not to the COVERED player. Anyway, a bad half from Charlie to be held up against two excellent substitute appearences (in the Olympics and against T&T) for him. He's doing OK in a US uniform. I do not, however, expect he'll get the call for Feb 11. He's not in game shape.
Sad to hear that Charlie did not make a very good match. To bad for him that he just starting up his pre season training.
He's definitely got a fair chance to make the team, imo. Kljestan, who was man of the match, started out pretty poorly with the National Team but has gotten better of late. He's done fairly well in the past in other national team set up and has a skillset that is pretty well-suited to the international game. I look forward to seeing him and Jozy Altidore develop as players. They could form a very good strike force in the future.
Word has it Gambia N.T. is trying to call up CHUCKd and hes considering the switch .... too bad FIFA has all those silly rules
I don't think the lack of training was the problem as most of the players were not training. The problem was the style of the play. The game favored big center forwards.
He's over 21 and has appeared for the US in the official World Cup qualifying matches. But the Gambian passport can secure him a "home status" in several Euro nations, such as France and Spain. That could be the origin of the said rumors.
F.Y.I Sweden won against Mexico last night with 1-0. Is Charlie going to play an other match with USA before the Hammarby LA camp next week?
The US doesn't play again till they play Mexico Feb. 11. And, at this point, we don't know if Davies will be called in for that game. When does the Hammarby camp start?
Ok. The Hammarby camp will start 8th to 22:nd of feb. First pre seasonmatches will be against Allsvenskan team GAIS the 13:th (friday...) and Houston Dynamo the 18:th and a match the 21:st against a not yet named team. - - Charlie comments from the USA match: http://www.hammarbyfotboll.se/se/aktuellt/artiklar/?articleid=33367 "How is your role in Hammarby different from your role in the national team=? In both teams, the main mission is to score goals, but after that there is a pretty big difference. There is more pressure on me in tha national team and I feel like I am trying to do to much there. In Hammarby, I have found my role and I learned to know my teammates type of play so it is easier for me to perform well in Hammarby. In the national team it is all about finding the flow in the game in a very short time since you dont get that many chances. In Hammarby my mission is to make the defenders have to spread out and make a lot of runs, and be creative in the offence. In the National team I have more defensive tasks, to fall down some and put pressure on the oponents.
That quote is good, especially this part, "There is more pressure on me in tha national team and I feel like I am trying to do to much there. In Hammarby, I have found my role and I learned to know my teammates type of play so it is easier for me to perform well in Hammarby." It really looked like he was really nervous and trying to force things. That might be one of the reasons he did not have an impact game.
Let's not rush to conclusion after 45 minutes in an off season friendly. I've seen CD suck for almost a full season that was frustrating, I've also seen him do a great season, and that is what's up ahead as soon as season starts. I'm sad to say I don't know enough about the USMNT but it would be crazy to oversee a talent like CD. He's got many good years ahead!
don't worry-he was maybe the most famous amateur in the US before he came your way. The USA coaches know that one game, good or bad, is just one game.
Don't worry Charlie. A legendary writer has your back. Guess who wrote this? "Charlie Davies was the standout. I like this kid a lot, and hope that he continues to get minutes. He seems to really have a good feel for where he should be on the field and is able to dig out a lot of balls on the endline. His substitution troubled me." Ah the brilliant football mind of Jamie Trecker. He also said that Danny Calif spent the whole night covering for Marvel Wynne. Pure comedy gold.
CD dreams of making the squad against Mexico: http://www.hammarbyfotboll.se/se/aktuellt/artiklar/?articleid=33371 I would translate it for you if it weren't for the fact I'm heading out in the cold winter night. A mission for those trying to kill the last dying minutes of work. Talk to you later!
Thanks. Quite boring quotes unfortunately. - I've always dreamt of playing against Mexico. - It's one of the biggest matches in our qualifying, and Mexico are our biggest rivals. I've always dreamed of playing in a match like that, an important game against Mexico. The atmosphere is always great for these games, and I'd be thrilled if I got a chance to play.
I agree, he should be less politically correct in his statements: "I hate mexicans, I really want to break their legs." Just a joke, I didn't mean to offend anyone! It will be interesting though to see if he makes the squad, I prefer him being in the competitive environment of the USMNT instead of starting up training with Hammarby, there's plenty of time for that.
