Re: Philadelphia City (Debate) So people not from Philly identify with the city itself, but once you throw "city" onto it, it becomes offensive and exclusive? Calling the team Philadelphia City will not deter a single person from going to a match.
Re: Philadelphia City (Debate) I honestly do not mind the name, but the only issue I possibly see with it is that the team will be located outside the actual city. Could be confusing for some less soccer-savvy folks.
Re: Philadelphia City (Debate) PCFC/PCSC and I'm ready to vote. Philadelphia City by itself... ehhhh, not sure yet.
Re: Philadelphia City (Debate) That's got nothing to do with the name. I've been to plenty of Revolution games, and I'm still not sure what sport they think they're playing.
Re: Philadelphia City (Debate) i understand this thought, but people that are fans of Philly sports don't say they are supporters of Philly from a specific region. they say they are philly fans. that would be no different. People would just say, I'm a fan of City or come on City or Let's go City. Out of the 4, i like this the most. Come on City, Come on City, Come on City!
Re: Philadelphia City (Debate) I like this post. It makes total sense to me. However...I think soccer fans will travel anywhere to see their team play. I also don't think the city of chester is not getting a slap in the face. I think the city officials are just very pleased that the team will be another way to grow the city in a positive manner. I don't think it excludes people. and if it does, in time no one will care. Like Hockey, no one cared about it in Philly except hockey fans until the Flyers won the Stanley Cup and now look at it. I think soccer will be the same way for people who are not already fans of the sport. But like I said, I prefer it over the other 3.
Re: Philadelphia City (Debate) No, still baseless. Representing the city of Philadelphia is covered by the Philadelphia part. That covers both the city and the region. The team would not be playing in the city, nor would its fan base consist of just people from just the city, nor would it need to differentiate itself from another Philadelphia team that does NOT play in the city. You can save Philadelphia City for 2058 when Philly gets itself a second team that plays within the city limits. Then "City" would make sense, as the new club would differentiate itself from the team playing out in Chester. For now, it's baseless Europosing. I don't like any of the names in the official poll, but City makes my eyes bleed every time I see it. In the end, it's not my team, so don't mind me. "City" annoys me, and I felt like venting. Whatever the decision, I hope you guys get the name you want. More importantly, have there been any whispers as to whether you guys will get your Philly flag colors, regardless of which name is picked? Between the scarves and the various uniform mock ups on this board over the years, the light blue and yellow is already entrenched in my mind.
Re: Philadelphia City (Debate) But if they're from Philadelphia, either the city or the metro region, they identify as being from "Philly." Wouldn't they be more inclined to say Come on Philly, Come on Philly, Come on Philly? "Come on City" sounds exceptionally forced when a more ingrained and locally identifiable two-syllable alternative is at the ready.
Re: Philadelphia City (Debate) Not to start a thing (not my nature), but if you go anywhere else and you don't live in the city limits and someone asks where you live, you say philly. I have to, because I'm originlly from here. when I go home no one has ever heard of the township I live in, which is about 10-15 minutes outside the city, so it just became easier to to say philly. I think its kind of the same thing. but I do some what agree with the "Come on City" thing. I was actually thinking that after I posted it. I still think all 4 are somewhat rip-offs of Euorpean clubs but I prefer city. But no matter what the name...I will be right there chanting it.
Re: Philadelphia City (Debate) Do you say you are from the "city of Philadelphia" or "Philadelphia city"? If not, then I don't see what your story has to do with this potential name. "Philadelphia" is going to be in the team name regardless of the nickname chosen. So, you already have the very name you identify with. That's not at issue.
Re: Philadelphia City (Debate) No worries on starting a thing. And it's like that everywhere. People are from "Cleveland" and "St. Louis" and "Seatte" even if they live in the suburbs. That's where the "Philadelphia" aspect of the team name comes in. The team should absolutely be called "Philadelphia" even though it plays in Chester. It's a Philly team, plain and simple. But I just don't see how/why it should be called "City" when it doesn't play in the city of Philadelphia, and the name "Philadelphia" represents the entire Philly metro area, not just the city itself. It's completely backward. The "Philadelphia" part of the name already covers everyone who is from "Philly." Tacking the term "City" onto the end of it is a mixed (and inaccurate) message.
Re: Philadelphia City (Debate) I'm taking everything back and voting for the name Philadelphia Bullies. Not only is it fun, but every other city on the east coast views philly as a violent, bully-esque city (especially when it comes to the fans). screw it...lets embace it and have some fun!
Re: Philadelphia City (Debate) Philadelphia City sounds a little off to me. A name that makes sense as well as sounds good is important to our teams future. I agree with some previous posts that it sounds a little bit forced. Maybe leave it for another MLS city that will have two teams playing in close proximity. Adding Football Club (or if we must - Soccer Club) to the end of our official name makes City and Union sound significantly better imho. Just like teams elsewhere in the US and world, we don't have to say these words when talking about our team, it just describes the team more to non-soccer fans and looks good on paper/tv. Off-Topic: As I have posted before, my preference is Philadelphia Football Club. Apart from people that would prefer Soccer Club, this name seems fairly non-polarizing to me and a good compromise. Lots of advantages over most of the rest, imo: Says what sport, does not alienate fans not from the actual City of Philadelphia, leaves it up to the fan-base to generate a nickname, doesn't sound forced, no issues with the local Unions, and most importantly - it rolls off the tongue naturally.
Re: Philadelphia City (Debate) I'm a lifelong city dweller who works in the burbs and has little use for logic or sense outside of work. Of the choices presented it's the most poetic. "Philadelphia City" sounds good. "City" connotes urbanity, diversity, constructed beauty, constant motion, grit, toughness, team spirit, ambition, a little insanity, and it'll look good on a shirt. What more do you want in a soccer team?
Re: Philadelphia City (Debate) Out of the 4 that were leaked to the public. I like this one the best it is not my favorite overall but if the majority of the SOB's want this one, I would vote for it.
Re: Philadelphia City (Debate) The issue is that when they roll out their City kit in the same powder blue color as Manchester City, people will just think of Philly as the MC nut riders. While I am lukewarm on City, the likely primary team color and moniker City will relegate the team to obscurity behind the richest club in the world.
we would be MAN CITY nut riders if MC was any good. in 10-15 years, Philadelphia City will field a better squad than MAN CITY
MAN UTD is the richest soccer club in the world (all of sports too). MAN CITY is the 15th in the EPL table. this is such a gross error, you should not be on this forum
Re: Philadelphia City (Debate) no offense... but you keep saying this and quite frankly I don't see why you just vote what your own mind thinks is the best? everyone on this board is blowing up with confusion and debate over what should be done when it comes to the name... so although a majority wants the name city maybe it certainly isn't a mandate.... I mean if Bryan's facebook status is any indication he barely knows what he wants himself.... then again maybe I'm just a little peeved cause I'm not really a supporter of the City name... (unless that does in fact win the vote that is)
You obviously haven't seen what City has offered Kaka then. City have far more to spend than United do.
Re: Philadelphia City (Debate) I would agree. I'd hate to see something win this poll because a bunch of non-interested folks vote for what they think more fans of the team want. I mean, since there's relatively little consensus (and the closest thing to a consensus is 2010, not even in the regular poll), it's probably best for everyone just to vote for what they think is best and let things fall where they may.
A problem that I got with 'City' is that its just a rip-off of Manchester City and has really no other significant reasoning behind it. And if the Philly team will have the light blue and gold team colors we all hope for, that would just amplify it.
