I think I like this better than any of the poll choices except Union. At least there's a good meaning behind it. Still, I think a year name will work best for a team starting in 2011 because "Elevens" has a nice symmetry with the number of players on the field.
should we be starting a sounders-esque campaign to get this going? i dont think theres ANY argument against this name, whereas with other names there are some big arguments against each one
Official Name: Philadelphia 2010 (FC/SC) Nickname: Zolos I think this is the best option I've heard so far.
Plus, the team nickname then stays as "Zolo" where as the other names would kill it (except for AC / SC that is).
I actually really like Philadelphia + Year. Its traditional like city, but has a more significant meaning. I would also however suggest using the year of the city's founding, not the teams
One other thing about 2010.... It's a very sanitized name. It has a very specific meaning and, on a personal level, is a very solid way of validating the power of the fans. The date isn't just the start of our franchise but is the culmination of years of hard work by everyone involved, not just SoB. 2010 is our beginning and as the name of the team will keep us focused on why we love and support this team.
From listening to everyone else's thoughts, there are clear issues with all four names (AC, SC, City, Union). Philadelphia 2010, however, avoids most (if not all) of the issues people brought up with those other names. It is very unique to not only our team, but our fan base. I see it as a reminder of the work it took from the fans, the city, the state, the league, and the ownership group to finally get a soccer team in Philadelphia.
Not sure if in the German League they say City + Date + FC/SC or if the date is mostly just on paper, anyone know? Either way I wouldn't be against it but I do think since we already have the 76ers that 2010 would be a better option for the date and that an FC/SC would be preferable on the end.
Seriously! This is a supid name for a soccer team. I hope more people vote on the 19th so this name is not picked.
According to wikipedia: "In 2007, TSG 1899 Hoffenheim decided to adopt the use of the short form name 1899 Hoffenheim in place of the traditional TSG Hoffenheim." Obviously not the rule, but just an example of where the year is the preferred label
for the german league there isnt a standard naming template, but most of the clubs incorporate a combination of the city, state/region, year founded, and some prefix/suffix(ex. FC, TSG, TSV, BV, SC, Vfl)
Thanks for adding to the debate. Good insight. ... I'm really interested to hear some issues people might have with picking this name.
