err...Scotland weren't ranked about 60th in the world in 1930.

Brazil were nothing special at all in the 1930s. They took 3rd in 38, but the field was still very weak.

Contrary to popular opinion, England did not sit aloof from the rest of the world, thinking them not worth playing. England played regular international matches. Saying England would have won the first 3 world cup is dubious, but they'd certainly have been among the favorites.

In 1930 the world cup only had 2 respectable teams, who met in the final. Two of the three European entrants were being regularly thrashed by England at the time.

In 1934 Spain, 3-1 winners over Brazil, had been slaughted 7-1 by England only a couple of years before. Winners Italy were played 3 times during that period, with 2 wins and a draw for England.

In 1938 finalists Hungary had been hammered 6-2 by England 18 months before. Brazil did take 3rd, beating Sweden 4-2, a team England brushed aside 4-0 away the previous year. A 2-2 away draw in Milan with winners Italy didn't point to any gulf in class.

The best league is in Spain. And those saying they don't care about the Intercontinental Cup, that's a lame excuse. If you send a team, you care. It's a question of pride. Otherwise don't bother turning up.

You must have heard somewhere that River Plate won more league titles than Boca Juniors.

But obviously you are unaware of the head-to-head results between Boca and River in the proffesional era. (or in the amateur era for that matter.) And you must also not be aware of how many international titles each team has. Boca dominates on both counts, and Boca also wins easily in the hearts of the people.

Boca is a passion. It is bigger than River and bigger than any European team. There is nothing that comes close.

so how many watch Boca on average (not just big games) each week? I'm sure I read somewhere it was about 25,000. That makes them as massive as Ipswich.

There are some unfortunate realities, both economical and issues of violence, that keep families from going to the stadium as much as they would like. But if you walk through Buenos Aires whenever Boca plays, you will see that just about every TV and every radio is tuned to the game. And it is not just Buenos Aires. Boca has the biggest following in all the provinces and they follow the team with as much passion as the fans from the neighborhood of 'La Boca'. You won't find a team anywhere in the world, short of a national side, that has such a following outside its area.

That is why the fans of Boca are called 'La mitad mas uno'. (Half plus one), because fans of Boca Juniors are a majority in the country.

Have you ever heard of a team called Manchester United? It's rumoured that they have fans who don't actually live in Manchester.

ManUre (or 'THE SCUM' if you prefer) is better known for the football fans that hate it. If that is popularity, so be it.

    So anyway......

It transpires from all this that the English league system is the best. #1

La Liga is pretty good too 'coz they've got some fecking impressive squad line-ups like Real Madrid, and Barcelona is in it. Plus Spain is a great place to party. #2

The Italian league is way cool, just name drop.... AC Milan, Inter, Juve, Roma, Lazio but their stadiums are mostly shite, big concrete wastelands with mobs setting off fireworks and the sounds of gunshots and "roll out the barrel" playing on their tinny PA "systems" #3

Germany's Bundesliga -- as expected, meticulously organized, media coverage however equivalent to the coverage of a funeral...... #4

,,, and that's about it really. Mexico too corrupt, MLS too dull with almost nothing at stake, erm, who else, French league has all their best players playing abroad (mostly for Arsenal), er, South American leagues, lots of rubbish blowing over the fields, cages and fences with a few Millwall type nutters trying to scale them, otherwise empty expanses, dodgy stuff.... er.... that's it, folks.

Congrats to the four winners, in that order. If I missed anyone, apologies.

Runner up: American roller derby. Perhaps the single greatest cultural contribution ever made by the Sammies.

For soccer fanatics in the US who think a great Sunday afternoon/evening is watching great soccer, FoxEspanol has a great lineup. It begins with the Argentine League at 2:00pm, following by the Brazilian and then the EPL.

I mention it here because it is a great oportunity to compare some of the best football from both South America and Europe.

Having just watched the excitement of the first 45 minutes of Boca-Racing (which Boca leads 1-0), I think it can't get much better than this, for the attacking attitude of both teams, and the great individual skill.

Right now you would have to give it to the Italians. Three of the four teams in the semifinals of Champions League. A rich history and as many trophies as anyone.

I will say that they are not as powerful as before and that everyone is catching up fast ... real fast. The most exciting league right now is the Premiership. (Especially with Chelsea's new stars!)

I think the Italian league would be much better, if they played each other, the same way they do when they play a team outside of ITALY.

it's so flippin annoying. It was a BILLIANT CL tourney last season, until the flamin Milan derby. UUUuurrurrrrghh!!

Anyways.....EPL all the way. Although, i don't mind watchin the Spanish primera for some SWEET ball control moves and tricks.

To have some flair within is one thing, casue really and truly, most of the pro's could do the stuff you seen in ads and commercials.

The real talent is when a player naturally incorporates it into his game. THAT'S CLASS.

Never forget Van der vaart when he was dribbling towards goal from the right, and fooled a defender by attracting him to his right to get the ball, THEN VDV quickly out of no-where used his right foot and swept the ball around him back into the same position.....all whilst running. It was timed perfectly. CLASS it tell yah.
