Thats a great name for a team in San Diego. The shield/crest could be something similar to Club Vasco de Gama but with American flavor. I personally do not like the Chivas nickname for Club Deportivo Guadalajara nor for a new MLS team in San Diego or whichever city Vergara decides upon.
On the surface, this point could be well taken. However: 1) I didn't say that it was a bad idea because "it [please insert some sort of verb here] euro-poseur," but that there is no real connection between the idea of the Arsenal of Democracy and the potential fans of a Detroit soccer team. 2) Arsenal is a "fashionable" club, and one to which the Euro-poseurs flock in droves. We really can't say that about any of the Dynamo clubs, now can we? There isn't the same glory-hunting cachet with the name Dynamo that exists with Arsenal. And, there is more than one Dynamo club, and only one Arsenal (and NO, the one in Argentina doesn't count!).
i agree, arsenal is fashionable along with the likes of chelsea, man u, and say liverpool. but i do feel that soccer fans in the u.s. are much more familiar with the english premier league than with eastern european leagues. but just because the name arsenal has more recognition/attachment than dynamo doesn't make it a bad choice, in fact it could help attract fans. and the fact that both arsenal and dynamo are clubs in europe make them both equally euro. hey, dynamo detroit would be a great name and i think detroit arsenal would be equally as great (furthermore, i think it would be awesome if detroit just got a club).
Re: UNITED Speaking for the United naming. It usually refers to a combination of teams. If in baseball, the Oakland A's and the SF Giants merged, they would be known as something like Bay United.

Philadelphia Athletic Club The crest can incorporate the liberty bell, or independance hall. I guess any new club can be named (______ athletic Club), and a non-formal nickname can develop after time, for example, the day Manchester United was founded, they didn't say that there nickname would be the red devils, most england clubs have a nickname, but that doesnt mean that its nickname is in their formal club name. another possible name along that format would be: Oklahoma City SC i know that this sound a little too european for some of you though.
Re: UNITED I always thought it was to distinguish between two FCs from the same city/town ("And we're just about to kick off between Machester FC and Manchester FC"). Possibly United also came from the uniting of two clubs. And when the clubs were a bit more creative, you got Rovers, Wanderers, Wednesday, etc. Aston Villa's from Birmingham, and I'm not sure where they got their name. Lots of time it was from a specific spot near the clubs grounds (e.g. the Woolwich Arsenal, right?). Nicknames came later, as noted. And I don't see why adding AC or FC is all that "gay," since most teams are referred to as clubs, even though they aren't so much anymore.
NO, NO, NO!!! No names like Freedom or Liberty! That doesn't just sound like WUSA, but also WNBA...disgusting thought. we don't need another alliteration on the "ph" like Phillies or Flyers (even though they are awesome names!) We could play off the "D" in Philadelphia. Something like: Philadelphia Demons FC Philadelphia Dynamos Philadelphia Independence FC -Spanish fans from the area could identify with Philly Independiente Demons FC is my personal favorite. I think that the city sports fans could identify with this name, seeing that we have the most ridiculous sports fans in the universe. Think about the marketing blitz with that name. I wish I won Powerball so I could buy into the league!

The majority of football Clubs i know of have their own Club House where team supporters can go hang out and practice sports. Most of these supporters also own stock in the Club. Carry on
I agree with VS. Unless you are a true Athletic Club where people pay dues to be a member of your club and use your athletic facilities, then it is not cool to use that term. Maybe we need a club with a huge bar and a great beer selection, that also runs a soccer team. It could be called a BDC (Beer-Drinkers Club) or something. Milwaukee BDC or My Life is a Wreck BDC. You could also have a club where people sit around and eat a lot of food while watching TV. They would be a FBC (Fat Bastards Club). Memphis FBC or Houston FBC. - Paul

Team names: Vancouver Whitecaps (they wore white caps to games) was always cool in NASL, and the team exists and could easily have 20,000 per game. Houston Heat Seekers due to NASA connection and aerospace. Seattle Sounders, again a very good NASL name. Philadelphia Freedom. Oklahoma Twisters is an obvious one. Chivas -- just call it Chivas US. Don't tell gringos like myself that Chivas means "goat". It doesn't help the image. Also, I hope we get a Minnesota team, so we can follow the comedian George Carlin's suggestion and name one team the Minnesota Mice. Seriously, the names are extremely important in getting the right image out. The Chivas team name needs to be attractive to Latino fans on both sides of the border.
IMO I would rather see the name as Chivas San Diego than Chivas USA. I think the gringos (those that don't speak spanish) will find out what Chivas stands for once they see the mascot. Below is a pic of the mascot and the new MLS owner operator.
If you want to literally follow the spirit of "Football Club" and "Athletic Club" and "Cricket and Sporting Club", etc ... then American soccer teams should all end in S.F., which stands for Soccer Franchise or Sports Franchise. Anything else is unfortunately derivative fantasy. Actually, I wonder how many European soccer teams are actually still run like a club? I think quite a few of them are registered as corporations and basically are run as such. So the use of club is just an anachronism in those cases. - Paul

The Phils have been around forever and I can't really say where the name came from, but an old are patch logo had two 1770s revolutionary-era men on it holding a baseball----thus the historical connection with the city. Also the 76ERS!!!!! not the Sixers like it seems the media calls them now---another historical connection to the city. The "Flyers" have been that since their inception in 1967.....don't know where that name came from either but being a purist sports fan I love it. Just get rid of the damn F***ing base black in their now home uniforms and go back to orange. How about the Philadelphia Patriots???? Another historical name for a possible expansion footie team there....

Phil and Phillis (the lame name for the two figures) were the mascots the Phils used when they opened the Vet. They died and the Phanatic replaced them. As for the name..... From the Phillies website: The Flyers were chosen purely from the alliteration with Philadelphia. But you're right, Philly has a rich historical tradition from which to draw from when naming teams. Maybe Philadelphia Militia.
How about The Philadelphia Benjamens(Franklin, famous philadelphian)... the promos would be killer... its all about the Benjamens baby...lol For the Oklahoma team I realy like the old Roughneck nickname Chivas sounds cool but to know that its a goat kills it for me... HEY, no goat jokes and me being from MS. I always thought Chi should have been named the The Chicargo Bravest, since the first time I heard the name Chicargo Fire I thought they were honoring the Fire Department but to only later find out they named it for a horrible fire that ravaged the city(who wants to name a team for a disaster, isnt that a bad oman!) I would love for NO to get a team... as long as the colors were purple green and gold... maybe the New Orleans Quarterman (for the French Quarters), I also like the Cresent City FC.
