this writer is one of those hoping to make the detroit ignition. i thought this was funny: as if that 1500 a month is guaranteed for the next couple of years, genius. well done. who needs a college education to fall back on. you played at belmont abbey - you're going to be a star!
Ask XSL Commish Loftin, who tried out in Kansas City after working at a grocery store stocking overnight. Then KC, Milwaukee, Chicago COO, now this....
Yeah, there is a real shortage of players. Apparently, there are pirates in Somolia that are kidnapping good indoor soccer players and holding them hostage.
No one really WANTS to play indoor soccer instead of outdoor, do they? There are a lot more options for American players than there were ten years ago. That said, there are plenty of other good ex-college players out there, but most make a lot more money at a real job than they would playing indoor pro soccer. The vast majority of guys make squat. The league minimum for even our top domestic league (MLS) is ridiculous. Most guys are taking a huge pay cut to play soccer professionally, especially indoor. It is nothing like baseball, basketball or football.
Me too. In fact I loved it so much I eventually stayed and was a Contiki tour guide for 5 years. Although these young men might not fully understand what the heck they are getting into, I'd love for them to live the dream. That being said, it looks as if they are thinking of dropping school all together. Despite my numerous attacks on the structure of our education system, the value of an education is simply awesome as a launching pad for the future. If it was my kid I'd say go to the PDL and keep your amateur status. But hey, maybe it'll work out spectacularly for them.
because the supply outstrips the demand. if guys wouldn't play for $12,500, they wouldn't pay $12,500. 'huge pay cut' from what? what they were making in college?
Follow your dreams and never looks back. College is an extremely overrated and over priced aspect of American life. Sports does discrimante against age, college does not... you can always enroll in college and pursue that lamb skin but once you start to hit the middle or late twenties you can't get nearly as much attention or respect as youngster. Young players can be molded, trained & retaught where as an older player doesn't have same learning curve.
Too many people who leave college or pass it up while they're the traditional college age never end up going or going back. College isn't for everyone but it's an extremely important and valuable experience for many. There's plenty of time for a talented player who starts playing pro indoor soccer at age 22 or 23 to have a long career.
All the more reason for the person to have a college education in the event pro indoor soccer collapses.
Unless I'm missing something, 3 of the 4 teams have a pretty full roster, with Detroit more than half way there.
