    Re: Go Billikens!

Speed is definitely the name of the game this year with the Lady Bills and like some people say "speed kills." Even though it's not a common stat used in soccer I'd love to know what these gals can run a 40 in. And not only are all these freshmen quick, they also have skills too, cause well if soccer was just about speed then Carl Lewis would have played forward for the USNT.

While it's true that we haven't scored on a corner yet I must say that the set pieces in general are much improved. No longer are the days of these lazy floating cornerkicks.......now they are being driven with power and pretty decent accuracy. This is very key and well it all leads to wins.

I'm not sure what a Billiken is exactly, but wouldn't you say it's rather impish ;)

You guys have me worried about playing St. Louis later this year. The Bearcats so far have looked out of synch, and are uncharacteristically making defensive mistakes. While the freshmen are playing a lot, there is very little senior leadership on the field as two senior starters are still recovering from injuries. The outside mids get trapped too often in the middle of the field, while the other teams outside mids blast by them for a cross. The center mids are having trouble working with the outside mids, and the defenders are not getting the help they are used to from the outside mids (while Cincinnati plays a flat back four, the outside mids come back quickly to help, putting essentially six across the back - that's not happening as the new players learn the system). Thus, watching the Bearcats play this year has been frustrating as a fan, even though they are 2-1-1, without yet playing any quality competition. We have let up six goals thus far, with no shutouts, whereas in past years it was very difficult for teams to score on us. The goals we have scored (and we have scored more in the past, but that's because people are not coming back to help on defense, which aids in counterattacks) have been opportunistic, and not due to any great build up from the back - I don't think we have strung together more than three passes in a row yet this season! We play Ohio State on Friday evening, and that will be a good test for the young team, but there is still hope that by the conference opener two starters will be ready to play (and one is an outside mid, which will help considerably). Until then I will be watching a struggling team trying to find its way, but there is enough talent there to become much more dangerous as the season progresses.

Good luck to the Billikens as they go east.

You should be worried - be very worried.

The Billikens are 3-0 and they haven't hit their stride yet. After losing Burke and Kehl to graduation, I have to admit I was worried. I'm not so worried now. The freshmen are for real. I think we'll call them "Hulcer, Guempel, Schuch and Hughes". They are going to score some goals.

In goal, Amanda Martin may not be Meghann Burke, but she's no slouch. Anny Lucier at sweeper - fughetaboutit! - I have a feeling she's going to make us forget about all previous Billiken sweepers. And, yes, as a sweeper, she is going to score some goals (on set plays).

Corner kicks? Look out! We may not have a lot of height, but I'll take a driven ball any day, and we're getting driven balls. We're going to get some goals. Believe it or not, we actually have some people who can finish - the driven balls just have to find them.

All systems are go. For the first time in their history, the Billikens actually have an attack. And the defense is as solid as ever.

    Go Billikens!

The Billikens took care of Southern Mississippi 4-0 on Friday night. The game against Tulane on Sunday won't be so easy. Tulane beat Marquette on Friday night (Green Wave Earn First-Ever Win Over Golden Eagles, 2-1 in Overtime) Tulane is now 4-2-1, having lost to NC St. and Old Dominion.

The Billiken 4-0 victory over Southern Miss was no surprise. After all, Southern Miss was picked to finish 13th in CUSA. Southern Miss was simply outclassed.

Anna Schuch continues to impress, as do Hulcer and Guempel. The defense was not tested.

    Billikens roll

I don't know what Tulane had that allowed them to beat Marquette on Friday. Whatever it was, they left it in Wisconsin. The Billikens dominated Tulane almost as much as they dominated Southern Miss.

It was another beautiful day at beautiful Hermann Stadium on the campus of St. Louis University, and the Billikens rolled over the Green Wave as if they were part of the five strains of bluegrass on the absolutely perfect Hermann Stadium field. You know what they say: if you can't play soccer on a field like that, you can't play soccer.

    SCORING:
13:47 SLU Anna Schuch (Jamie Perry, Courtney Hulcer)
18:10 SLU Courtney Hulcer (Jamie Perry)
25:22 SLU Jamie Perry (unassisted / free kick)

This Billiken team can play. I'll say again that this is the best team the Billikens have ever had. I include the 1999 team that won the CUSA regular season title, as well as last year's team that finished the regular season ranked #25 in the country in one poll. This team is better. I have no doubt.

The freshmen are awesome. Begin with Hulcer, Guempel and Schuch. Add Hughes and Gresco to that. Add a couple of sophomores who've proven themselves, Cigno and Ferguson, some juniors who've who've also proven themselves, Pecher, Perry and Kornfeld, and anchor the back line with seniors like Lucier and Carlson. Throw-in Amanda Martin, a sophomore transfer from Arizona at GK. Mix it all together and you have a Billiken team that's quite capable of giving people trouble.

No doubt about it. They have a good team. I don't see any real weaknesses anywhere, and I see some real strengths (like speed and an ability to finish) that I've never seen in a Billiken team.

The attack is not based on a single player as some previous Billiken attacks have been. There's nobody an opposing defense can focus on because the Bills have speed and firepower all over. It has to be a nightmare for opposing defenses. They can't key on Perry because, if they do, they're going to be picking the ball up out of the back of their net. :D

It's still early. They still haven't proven they can win on the road. And the amount of heart they have hasn't been tested. But they own Hermann Stadium. (The biggest margin of defeat for the Lady Bills at Hermann Stadium is 2 - I guess Duke beat them by 2 a few years back, but the game was much closer than that)

SLU may have been offside 4 times, but not the 4 times they were called for it. ;) Ah, well, I guess it's all part of the game, but it's funny when a liner can't keep up with the game like that. All that Billiken speed is just too much for the linesmen.

As long as we're complaining, I have to mention the stadium announcer, who can't tell Lyndsay Gensler from Amanda Martin. I mean, they don't look at all alike. I could tell them apart at 100 yards even without my glasses.

The Bills also seem to have a few problems with jersey numbers this year. Even with a program somebody could get confused. They can't kid me. That #11 is Anna Schuch, even if the program does say that Schuch is #22. Maybe by the end of the season they'll have the numbers all sorted out.

Hopefully, by that time, the Bills will be in the national tournament. Hope springs eternal.

    Go Billikens!

If you like stats, we got stats.

There's no point in listing the GK records because Meghann Burke has them all. In GK records, Burke is the only name you need to know. She was somewhat indomitable, just like her GK coach. :D

I was surprised to see that Kathy Musschoot, who only played two years for the Bills, and wound up playing for the DIII Webster Gorloks, has the record for career game-winning assists. Go figure. (I know, it's a strange statistic but, hey, what the heck?) With a game-winning asist today, Perry is now one of the players tied at two, as are Hulcer and Cigno.

I'm not too surprised at most of the other names in the record book, except maybe Christie Cigno who, though still a sophomore, has quietly moved onto the all-time lists.

In career goals, Jamie Perry is now just one shy of the record set by ol' number double zero, Trisha Underberg. With her assists today, Perry has now moved onto the all-time list for assists, although no one is likely to challenge the record in that category set by the legendary Jenny Kehl.

    XYZ,

You are obviously very knowledgeable about the SLU program. In looking at your last post, I noticed a name I was curious about.

Do you know what ever happened to Kathy Musschoot? I thought she was a wonderful player and then she just disappeared from the roster and I didnt see that she transferred anywhere.

I thought she was as good on corner kicks as anyone SLU ever had.

She transferred to Webster University, which is a DIII school .
I thought she showed flashes of brilliance but had a couple of weaknesses, most significantly, she had a problem that many Billiken players have had over the years: she couldn't finish.

I don't know how she did at Webster.
The players they have taking corners now may be the best they've ever had.

The Billikens also have the most balanced attack they've ever had.

We know the Bills are awesome at home. The big question is how well they can play on the road. We'll know soon enough; their next six games are road games, beginning this weekend against Houston and TCU.

    Go Billikens!

Well our beloved Lady Billikens hit the road for the next six games. Right now I'm trying to decide which song is worse to have in my head. For the next 3 weeks the obvious song is "on the road again" but for this next week I'm definitely thinking of the old western swing number "Deep in the heart of Texas". After reading what you wrote XYZ, I wanted to quote some stuff but there was just too much information. The squad that Coach Champ has put together this year is damn impressive though. I especially like that tall backup keeper Amanda Martin. What did you say??? She's not the back up........I thought she was the big tall one. Oh yeah that's right............we were a lil confused by the P.A. announcer. Oh wait we weren't confused.......it was only him. :) I was a bit skeptical of us picking up the keeper who gave up three goals to us last year but Miss Martin proved me wrong. Well.....hopefully the Lady Bills can avoid their road woes that have plagued our program in the past and we can return to STL still in the lead of the CUSA and on the road to an NCAA birth.

I, too, have been impressed with how St. Louis has played, along with, surprise, DePaul and UAB. Cincinnati is still struggling, although one of their injured two year starters returned last weekend, played 15 minutes a half against TCU (UC played way down to their competition), and then she played about 22 minutes a half against Memphis. For Memphis she was moved to center mid (usually plays outside left), and this seemed to calm the team down, and they played much better, giving us hope that they can turn things around on the road trip (UAB, then S. Florida). The down side for Cincy is that it appears as if the other five injured players (four of which were starters) will red shirt this year, leaving us very young. We display two major problems - the defense lets up breakaways (all but two goals allowed this year were on breakaways) - it is because they have not yet learned to play together, and to cover for each other. The second is finishing (two of the injured players were the projected starting strikers) - we look like St. Louis used to when finishing. I will report on the weekend games next week - and I post here because I really don't think there are too many others who would like to know about Cincinnati soccer. As I used to live in St. Louis, I will root for the Billikens as well until Cincy visits St. Louis in a few weeks - and XYZ, I believe two years ago, the 2001 season, UC beat St. Louis at St. Louis by a 2-0 score (I was there). Good luck this weekend.

We already know Amanda Martin is a darn good keeper. However she's so impresive that she can make a save while on the bench. I wish I could do that ;)

Yes they did. Cincinnati defeated the Bills twice that year by the same score. The second time was in the CUSA tournament in Milwaukee. The Billiken record against Cincinnati is 2-8-0 overall, and 1-4-0 at home.

I didn't mean to imply that the loss to Duke was the only time the Billikens have lost by two goal margins at home. It was the one I remembered off the top of my head. Playing at Hermann Stadium the Billikens have lost by 2 goal margins 3 times, 0-2 to Duke in 1999, 0-2 to Evansville in 2000, and 0-2 to Cincinnati in 2001.

Actually, three of the Billikens' four home losses to Cincinnati have been by two goal margins. In addition to the game in 2001, the Bills have lost at home to Cincinnati 0-2 in 1996, and 1-3 in 1998, but those games weren't at Hermann Stadium.

The worst loss the Bills have ever suffered was to Cincinnati: a 7-1 drubbing at Cincinnati in 1996, the Billikens' first season.

1-0 decision on the road at Houston. Very nice going! I believe that makes three straight shutouts in conference play.

I sure thought that the we would struggle more in the nets with Burke gone.

I thought so too. But the defense has not been pressured much. (the best defense is a good attack) Besides that, Amanda Martin is a good keeper.

    Billikens Fall to TCU 3-2
    stats

That's a minor upset, not a big one. It appears the Bills may have dominated portions of the game, but they should be beating TCU. Even with home field advantage SLU has a Jones rating about 200 points higher than TCU.
    Code:
[font=courier] Rank W-L-T Rating SE Opp

    TCU 139 3-4-1 1391 90 1585[/font]
The other loss this year was not an upset at all because Princeton is a ranked team (ranked in two polls and having a higher rating than SLU). The tie with Penn is also not a surprise since Penn's rating is about the same as SLU's.

    Billikens Take on Non-Conference Foes
    Drury and SMS this weekend

I don't want to jinx them, but I have to favor the Billikens in those two games.

But then, I thought they'd beat TCU.

    Catching up

The Bills breezed through two non-conference games on the road last weekend. They travel to Carolina for two conference games this weekend.

There's nothing too surprising about the lineups for last week's games. Tara Gresco started the Drury game, and Kim Sinclair the SMS game. Other than that it was the usual suspects.

Is there a keeper controversy? Martin and Gensler each picked up a shutout over the weekend, although they obviously weren't tested much (a grand total of 3 saves in two games). It's good to see Gensler getting some playing time.

The Bills are at East Carolina and Charlotte this weekend. Maybe they can get a little revenge for last year's games against those two teams.
