I'm not exactly sure how much we had before we sold Toja, but since FCD sold Toja there's: 500k Allocation from Toja sale 125k Allocation money from Arturo Alvarez trade 125k Allocation money from Abe Thompson trade 400k Major Allocation for missing playoffs(at least that's what it was in the past) -125k for Bruno Guarda trade That leaves us with $1.05 million in allocation money plus a possible $500k more if Dallas sells Cooper. That's ONE MILLION in allocation. You be the scout, how do you spend it?
QUESTIONS: How can allocation money be used? Are the 5 scenarios listed below all valid? 1] Trade for a player? 2] Buy down CAP hit of a specific player contract (i.e. Davino was $400 on CAP, can we use allocation money to pay off part of his contract so that he only costs us 100 or 200 against the CAP?) 3] Use to buy down a DP's contract so that it no longer qualifies as a DP hit to the CAP? (i.e. Cooper gets raise to $700k, use 500k allocation $ to reduce to a CAP hit of just $200?) 4] Use to pay newly hired player to keep reported salary CAP number low? 5] Use to pay higher salaries to several deserving players in order to keep them on the team?
Too...confusing....getting...tired...head. Somebody figure this out and let's get someone good. My vote is winger or striker depending on who stays and who goes.
With that much money, they could bring in several good players. I wouldn't speculate on who they would look to at this point, but I would like to know if you can use your allocation money to buy out a contract. I would gladly burn 400k of this to buy out Davino and say Adios amigo.
if a player on our team is out of contract, can we use allocation $ on his new contract? No? well, that suc<s.... hmm, I thought we used allocation money to buy down a couple of the contracts in 2005 - like Vanney, etc. sigh - tired head
Don't feel bad, Chas, it's easy to get tired head with this crap when they change the rules on what seems like a monthly basis. I just let my pretty little brain rest on this mess until Buzz tells me where to stand. Much easier that way.
as far as MLS rules and regulations go --- on the topic of what's the decision mechanism for a returning overseas Yank, or for that matter an outstanding homegrown teen-ager: which MLS team will he be assigned to??? --- maybe they should re-write the law to read "Commissioner's whim"
Are you sure? Each year the MLS Competition Committee determines how much allocation money is made available to each team. Allocation money can be traded by teams. Allocation money does not count against a team's salary budget and can be used: • To sign players new to MLS (that is, a player that did not play in MLS during the previous season). • To re-sign an existing MLS player, with League approval. • In connection with the exercise of an option to purchase a player's rights or the extension of a player's contact for the second year provided the player was new to MLS in the immediately prior year. Allocation money cannot otherwise be used to buy down the salary budget number of players already under contract to the League, nor can allocation money be used to buy down the budget number of a Designated Player
as sure as I am when someone in the team front office tells me. I think the key line is probably "league approval." Which means "no" unless it's Landon Donovan. FCD might get away with using it on Cooper, but the Hunts would have to make the case to the ownership committee at MLS cup and have it approved. I'm not holding my breath.
With this kind of $$, we could buy most of the Puerto Rico Islanders. I have a suggestion to HSG. I propose we trade our team for the Puerto Rico Islanders.
Hindsight's 20-20 and all that, and CC didn't exactly wow the crowds with stylish soccer, but I think that was the last time I even heard the words Supporters Shield mentioned in the context of FCD. Meh, what's done is done.
CC seems to have done an OK job with our barely-a-territory to the south. (it's never going to happen, but) at this point, I'd be willing to give him a second go. Can't be worse than Hyndman. Wait... nevermind. I don't want to wish ruination on CC's career just for the slight uptick in on-field performance we'd see. Hitch and HSG would find a way to kick us back down again. "Hey, I wonder if Sharon Osborne would be willing to play midfield?" -Hitch. (see what I did there? two jokes in one! replacing soccer with OzzFest, and adding a midfielder when we already have twenty-seven of them! funny, right?)
I'll tell you what they'll do with the "allocation" money/credits... they're going to take the ton they make off selling Robbie Rogers and Kenny Cooper, pile it up with all of the allocation $ and then swim in it. That's profits baby and that's what HSG cares about. Of course it's similar to making money by selling possesions at a pawn shop but hey it's money!
Hire some freakin' scouts and send them to South America. Sign some Colombians, Uraguans, Paraguanans, Chileans, or Bolivians, or whatever. And use the remainder to offer KCJr a deal.
FCD cannot use the alocation money to rework KCJ's contract. Say he is sold for $1.5 million. $500,000 goes to the MLS, another $500,000 can be used to purchase players. The remaining $500,000 can be used for other things, such as scouting. So your idea, Hulka, is not a bad one. I would disagree with "hiring" the scouts. Just let it be known that if a scout sends a player to FCD on a trial, and the team likes him enough to sign him, some scratch will be coming his way. Add in the partial allocation FCD recieved from El Lay for Ruiz. -SD
