True. But Walcott had not shown he could cut it yet at international level until the Croatia match. He got criticised by many after the Andorra match. Before WC2006 most England fans loved Lampard and criticised the selection of Hargreaves. A year later the situation was completely reversed. As for Owen, he has been scoring but has not really hit top form yet. If he does and is still excluded then things will look more bleak for him. Crouch, Defoe and Rooney have all been in good form recently and scoring so their inclusion is not really controversial. Heskey has different characteristics to Owen in that he does not score himself but enables other to do so. Obviously the Press will write off Owen playing for England again but players do return after missing out on squads. Examples of this are Barry, SWP and Heskey. It's up to Defoe to finally make a good claim for himself in the England side. If he does not provide a threat then his position will be closely scrutinised.
half of the pub i was in was still ripping into walcott about 20 minutes in to the croatia game. to be fair i did s************ to myself when he kicked the ball into his own foot and fell over.
How is it fickle to agree that the team played well in Croatia and deserve to start again in the next match??? I don't even know what you mean by 'locks' but they should both start the next game for definite. Theo in Andorra was one of the few plus points in a frustrating game Scoring a hat-trick should make you a 'lock' for the next game anyway.
I wouldn't say Heskey is a "dead cert" but I do think at the minute he's deserving of a place in the squad. He did really well when McClown brought him back in, strangely though as a strike partner for Owen. I think a lot of England fans have trouble getting their head around the concept that your best team is not necessarily your best XI players. Not that I'm accusing anyone on this thread of that, but you see it all the time in the Lampard/Gerrard debate too. What do you all think of Capello's comments about Owen: I take it this is Capello saying Owen doesn't bring enough to team play.
My only problem with that statement from Capello is the question of how Defoe, in turn, deserves the inclusion...They are both scoring goals for club, and Owen has a knack for scoring for England....Defoe, doesn't..
Maybe because Defoe has started well as a partnership with Crouch and they have set up goals for eachother. I still feel Capello's comments are a little harsh as Owen is a team player and towards the end of last season did well in a role behind two forwards for Newcastle. He also made a comment about Newcastle's form, so maybe he feels he can't judge Owen fully as he isn't getting enough attacking chances to show his off the ball work and work for the team in areas that a forward needs to show these qualities to gain a place in Capello's squad.
On the plus side Owen only needs 10 more goals to be England's all time top scorer. You'll probably never get better odds on that than you would right now, so it might be worth a bet. He's still only 28 and could play for another 5-6 years for England (if he gets back in obviously). I actually think in terms of team play, Owen is a lot better than people give him credit for. He's adapted his game and last year when playing behind the front two was almost working as a playmaker for Newcastle. He very rarely gives the ball away, others like Beckham give it away like a cheap slag.
I don't fully buy Capello's comment concerning Owen. I think there is something bigger looming as to why he has not included him. The last time around, Capello stated his fitness was the concern.. Now, all of the sudden, "it's not just about scoring goals"....
It's possible and after the France game the press tried to create some friction between the two by misquoting Owen. I guess It's pointless to speculate on it though.
A lock means undroppable. If you think opinions of players should do a 180 after each match then fair enough. I disagree. Of course if Theo gave an interview you did not like before the match you would endorse him being dropped. There are footballing reasons for retaining the same side as the Croatia match. There are also valid reasons for bringing back those who were only missing through injury. Or trying out certain fringe players.
Nobody is saying anyone is undroppable or a 'lock' on here are they? Especially players who have shown brief quality just in recent games. If a player plays well he has a great chance of playing in the next match and would deserve it. Don't think that is a great shock. I doubt Theo would give an interview like that whilst injured just before a big international game. He seems a very intelligent young man and would put the team first. Valid reasons, I'm guessing England player of the year 2007 award for exceptional performances in that great year for all involved in English international football is the valid reason for someone coming back then..........
My only problem is that if Capello really believes what he says then it should apply to everyone, notably Lampard. All too often for England he has used a goal to mask a poor game of doing little. Sadly the fans bought it. If Capello really believes what he said then Lampard needs to pull his finger out each and every game. He was okay against Croatia but not better than his peers have been in previous games.
Thanks revelation. More like notably Beckham. Capello is supposedly judging players on performances since he took over and what they do in training. Lampard was excellent in Croatia in a new role set up by Capello and did everything he asked of him. Should have been given an excellent goal too Capello has already said everyone begins with a new start so his or anyone elses performances under McClaren and Sven are disregarded. Also fans 'bought it' if Lampard scores a goal. Yeah right he has been insulted and treated disgracefully of late by the idiot crowd
I just can't see how Defoe is justified and Owen is not. Really that simple. I'm not an England fan, I'm not a fan of Owen, but the guy still is amongst the goals on an absolute rubbish team.
Even when England are winning and top of the group, the manager still gets criticised left, right and centre. It really is the impossible job.
'twas ever thus. I'll admit to being very uneasy about Gerrard and Lampard in the same line-up, let alone together in central midfield, but after masterminding the stuffing of Croatia, I think Capello deserves the benefit of doubt. The potential abuse from the armchairs, however, were the gamble fail, is too hideous to contemplate and he knows it.
i'd be worried if people were actually booing the team, but they weren't. they were booing ashley cole, which is fine by me.
