    "The New England Revolution has become the third team to qualify for the 2008 MLS Cup Playoffs. The results from Week 28 of the Major League Soccer schedule, coupled with the remaining league matches and head-to-head tie-breaker scenarios, have secured the Revs’ passage to the postseason for the seventh consecutive season, the longest active playoff appearance streak in MLS.

    ...

    Following last weekend’s matches, the Revs can finish no lower than fourth overall in the Eastern Conference and no lower than eighth in the overall MLS standings because they hold the head-to-head tiebreaker with FC Dallas, currently in fifth in the West."

    ["Special Ed" from the Crank Yankers program]YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!![/Special Ed]

    I guess Burns was right, no need to feel any pressure. Another successful season in Revland. Making the playoffs is all we need, because then we can "compete" for the championship.

    And while we paid for all the other teams to fill out their salary cap, being the good guys that we are, we let everyone else save the same $25,000 or so that we saved by not using all our cap.

    It's nice that we can all be suitably unimpressed.

    But you know what it would make it really special?

    D.C. United NOT getting in.

    Good to see this happen. Now let's remember, all this is is a step. That's it. This isn't a major accomplishment anymore.

    Interesting factoid that raises questions. Are there other teams that once they make the playoffs will be at 7? or more? And I would assume that the all-time streak is longer than 7, anyone know the details?

    Ah, but this is much better than the past several weeks, where we've been broken by the underwhelming news (CCL, USOC, our MLS league play).:p

    No

    Actually, the SJ/Houston team has made it since 2001 (but they aren't viewed as a continuation), the last year New England didn't make it.

    I'll let someone else attempt that one. But it could only be Chicago, LA Galaxy, or KC.

    No.
    LA reached the playoffs the first 10 years.

    Sounds like something to strive for :rolleyes:

    I'm just wondering at what point, if any, the Revs are going to start playing like a contender. Right now, I can't say I'd pick the Revs to beat anybody. We have been looking bad

    Glad to see them in, now they need to bring it together like they were before the round of injuries we had. C'mon lads, it's time to play!

    Seems like as good a time as any to try (once again) to sheme about ways to improve the playoff system so that the regular season finish position matters more. Currently, with the first round home and away, "home-field advantage" pretty much applies to only one game, the conference championship.

    I'd like to see the first 2 seeds from each division get some significant playoff advantage. A NFL wildcard approach where the top teams get a bye in the first week of the playoffs occurs to me. I just can't think of a good way to implement it.

    I think that is a foregone conclusion. DC's last 3 league matches:

    @LA, L 2-5
    @DAL, L 0-3
    CHV, L 0-3

    DC's final 3 matches:
    @HOU
    NE
    @CMB

    Add in the CCL and they are 0-6-0 and have been outscored 16-2.

    They are currently out of the playoff picture, tied for 5th in the East and 10th overall. I don't see them getting back in it.

    Personally, I kind of like going with single-elimination in the first round.

    Well, at least there's an easy three points at home for them. If Columbus decides to rest their players, they might grab another three there.

    someone remind me of the MLS seeding system again... if it ended today, we'd be matched up with? Chicago? given how well that match up has gone all season, I'd love to see someone else.

    I'm pretty sure we'd play Chicago.

    And don't worry, maybe we are the Buffalo Bills of MLS, but in this case, the Fire are the Angels, and we're the Red Sox.

    Do you really think playing the Revs in D.C. will be an "easy three points" for D.C.??

    I'd like to see World Cup style group play. You coudl do it in the same number (or one more) weeks we have now.

    The first place team gets 3 home games, second gets 2, 3rd place gets one, and the 4th place team shouldn't complain about not getting a home playoff game because they are lucky to be there at all.

    3 weeks of group games and the group winners meet in the finals, or if you want to work an extra week into it, you can have the group winners host the 2nd place team from the other group and the winners meet in the final the following week.

    If they did it this way, the champ would have to play everyone in the division, and the better teams get enough of an advantage to make it worth fighting for, but not too much of an edge. The only drawback would be if the final round had two 2-0 teams playing and two 0-2 teams facing off, but there isn't much you can do about that other than give the 3rd place group team a spot in the Dr. Evil Invitaional SuperLiga for incentive :D

    Yes. We have nothing to play for, and I expect that we won't play for it.

    I think it would certainly be worth a try.

    I have to say that I worry about the apparent REV FO and coaching staff logic though. I'm not convinced they consider 3 home games a reward. Given the size crowds they get, I don't expect they'd want to open the stadium up 3 more times.
