I suppose the real question now becomes, what do Garrett and jokeefe think of California's Proposition 8...
"Sources tell us that the likelihood of the soccer stadium in the Somerville will be a go in the near future. Making the stadium that size, to me, is a sign of their plans for the ancillary stuff like concerts and the like. I mean I'd like to think the Revs could fill (or at least mostly fill) a 35K seat stadium but I'm a little skeptical.
25k with the ability to expand (like what Toronto have) is something I wouldn't mind. 35k to start, however, is a bit odd. We'd be playing in a half-full stadium consistently. It's not like the article says a capacity of 35,000 either, but a 35,000-seater
I was just thinking that, have it at 35K for things like Brazil, Mexico, and the Beckham game. Which I suppose is a good thing. Keeps the soccer events in the soccer stadium. I still think its too big from a Revs perspective. Nathan did you really think there would be terraces? My first question....is Briggs gonna run security?
That is too big from a Revs perspective. Keep it around 20K and either use Gillette for the "big" games or enjoy the possibility of actual sell-outs.
maybe they have a plan to sign aguero, anderson, krkic and banega for the opening of the stadium in 2012
It would be uncharacteristically ambitious of the Revs. Then again, I don't know the marginal cost of adding 10K seats to a stadium. Maybe it only adds 10% to the cost. Or maybe they're trolling for college football games. Or maybe....they've done enough market research to validate that 35K is a plausible size for the Revs.... (for sale: bridge, Brooklyn NY. PM me for details) Or maybe they can't do without the barrel of cash they get from Ocean Spray and Lumber Liquidators and are bringing the seat tarps with them.
Isn't one of the biggest reasons that the Revs want their own stadium is to create demand for Revs' tickets? To convince people that if they want to attend a game they have to buy tickets now and not wait for the future because tickets may not be available? A 35,000 seat stadium will not do this. Putting 12,000 people in a 70,000 seat stadium in Foxborough creates no urgency for people to buy tickets -- if the place is empty today, it'll be empty for the next game, too, so why get tickets today when there will be plenty available next game? Then those people put off their purchase that next week, and the following week, and they often forget completely. If the Revs build a 20,000 seat stadium, it will usually look close to full capacity on TV, and word will spread that if you want tickets you have to get them now and not wait.
The number of times I've heard Revs fans make the above statement: hundreds The number of times I've heard Revs officials make the above statement: zero I think that assumption is baked into the conventional wisdom of BigSoccer that we never question. (But I still think 35K is probably a typo.)
That philosophy has yielded lower than expected attendances at every SSS save LA (Galaxy not Chivas) and Toronto. Colorado, Chicago, and Dallas all thought people would be lining up to get in every night. That hasn't been the case. If the 35.000 figure is right, they probably want to host huge concerts in the Boston area and maybe more important US games like the Gold Cup final or games against Mexico, Brasil, etc...
I've at the very least seen FO officials whole-heartedly agree to this statement a few times at tailgates and Jonathan Kraft mention it on WEEI in 2006 and 2007. I missed his last "owners interview", so I don't know what he said then.
He said Patriots Place is great and the Pats will miss Troy Brown. Oh, and that he got into soccer during the '94 World Cup. This is the way I'm thinking about this, if the number is correct. 35k gives you ample space for things like concerts, big-event soccer games, and other sporting events. We've already seen MLS teams put an equal (our Inferno friends would say unequal) importance on non-soccer revenue streams with their stadiums. I think the Revs could bring in probably 20K (maybe 25K, maybe) by moving into the city. 2/3rds full is better than 1/1,000,000th full.
It is odd, and personally-speaking, I think it would be a huge mistake to build a stadium that size: something around 20,000 would make much more sense.
