Actually we have another match no matter what.
If we win (not likely at this point =/): against Brazil for gold
if we lose: against Germany for bronze

Un-f*king-believable. Another wrong cross goes in, 4-1.
US is surely better, but they are also incredibly lucky.

I did see wrong crosses going in, but two in 10 minutes, never...

And look what Sawa missed now...

A decent perfomance, but still many things to work on. They look scared to hold on to the ball sometimes, when they have space and better options. Also our keeper is horrible.

I thought she looked really confident in the first half, but the second has just been terrible... and wtf is with running on and off the ball with a forward standing right there, we've already lost and it's giving me a heart attack.

The keeper should hang herself before Germany puts 5 past her, lol.
It was funny how they almost blew that final goal too.

They did what they could guys. At least they are entertaining then the mens. US womens football has always been good. So, its a pretty decent score.

Quite true, and at least the final goal was a bit of a moral victory. Hopefully they can still go into Germany with confidence.

I don't think that 4th is that bad considering some of the opposition that they had to face. We beat Norway 5-1 (a team that the U.S. lost to).

It appears that more playing opportunities for women soccer players will be opening up with the rebirth of a women's league in the US.

    http://www.mercurynews.com/breakingnews/ci_10548138

".....The Bay Area's start-up women's soccer team took three world-class veterans and a promising defender in the international draft that will be announced Thursday.
The team, which is expected to announce its name and where it will play next week, took Brazilian midfielder Formiga with the first pick of the Women's Professional Soccer draft held this week.
The club also took Canadian forward Christine Sinclair, a former college player of the year from Portland, and Japanese forward Eriko Arakawa and Brazilian defender Erika. All recently appeared in the Summer Olympics in China....."

    Hi all,

I'm a big time Nadeshiko fan from Canada...didn't realize they had a thread here @ BS (I'm usually in the women's soccer section).

It'll be interesting if Sawa, Arakawa, Ohno and Miyama end up going to the US next spring. I think there's interest, but there's a long way to go as the players, clubs and JFA know practically nothing.

Please check out a fan site I created about Japanese women's soccer...would love to learn more/have more insight from various fans regarding all things Nadeshiko!

Arakawa already has a spot with the Bay Area team of the new US women's league. I believe that Sawa has one also, but I can't remember where. She is well known in women's soccer circles because of her play with the Atlanta team. Doesn't Miyama have a spot? I would be surprised if she doesn't because of her great performance with Florida State in last year's NCAA championships.

    That's what happens when you field a keeper who's 5 foot 4.

Yes its Aya Miyama invited to LA.

But arent you confusing her with Mami Yamaguchi ? She's the Florida player, a FW I think, and now plays in Sweden. Miyama is the regular MF international, and is home-based. As far as I know, she has never played in the USA, but I could be wrong.

Re: Official Japanese WOMEN'S NT Thread [R]

Yes without question Japan was the sensation of the tournament. Unfortunately I managed to get a web feed and saw the full length of their total dominance and tragic loss to England on penalties, despite a dazzling 62% v 38% possession share (how lop-sided can it get ?).

So I prefer to remember other things from the tournament, and I made a list - posted elsewhere here -

Some things I picked out from reviewing the FIFA.com video highlights - these clips make it look like a really amazing tournament:

    1. Most crowd atmosphere and most goalmouth scrambles (watch the one near the end), the opening game NZ v Canada.

    2. Memorable goal (one of many) - Brazil's free kick in its 2-2 tie with Nigeria - a perfect banana from 35 yards, perfectly placed.

    3. Memorable display - the first half of the Japan-France game - these goals owed nothing to luck - some are a joy to see twice. Perhaps the headed goal is the pick.

    4. The biggest celebration - the home team NZ winning in its final game, even though they had been eliminated - they looked like they had won the tournament. ;)

Apparently 164,000 fans have attended the first 24 games, with a few games getting over 10,000 through the gate.

I wonder of the final can get 20,000 ? Lets see, it is in NZ after all.

You're right. I stand corrected. It was Yamaguchi.
