In 2006, the year he joined, Denilson helped the Carling Cup side get to the finals at 18 years old. I think that shows exemptional talent for a young player. Also, he played in 10 Premier League games and 2 FA Cup games. Would he have to be a first team starter at the age of 18 years old to show exceptional talent? Huh?? He was hurt for the second half of the last season, so you cannot hold that against him. For the first half of the season, he was the best player in the Carling Cup even though he was 19. I think he had three goals before he got hurt in January - all against Premier League teams. Denilson started four Premier Leage games and three European games in half a season. That sounds like more than "glimpses" of talent to me. Besides hindsight says that he decision to renew was wise. To most of our chagrin, at 20 years of age, Denilson has continued to push his way into the team. How many other 20 year old central midfielders do you see playing in the middle of Champion's League clubs? I think he has had a goal or two and a few assists so far this season too. He has also been called up to the Brazilian national team. I think they got this decision right based both on what he did at the time and what he has continued to prove.
Denilson is definitely a talent, despite having a worse sophomore season than he'd had from his first season with us. Since Cesc gobles all the minutes as our forward CM, the question has always been can he play effectively alongside Cesc. Diaby, who would be better playing in Cesc's spot than out on the wing, has suffered (that, plus his affinity for picking up injuries). Denilson has certainly been willing to play the DMid position, but will he thrive there? If he thinks so, well, we could have our long term partnership, because his offensive and passing skills are so far ahead of Eboue and Song at this point. The issue will be whether he'll be able to hold off Ramsey long term.
wanye_stirrear -- I wrote based on my general impression. I didn't think that he got as many games as he did. You pointed out my errors - kudos. We all hope that he continues to do well.
Well, Denilson cares. The point I was trying to make is Denilson seems to me to be playing out of position. Two seasons ago I thought he was a DMid, but even after last year, I think he'd be better playing in Cesc's position. If he's going to change position, part of his success in doing so will depend on his confidence that doing so will ensure him regular playing time, and to a lesser extent, that the team will benefit. Flamini's expressed dislike for LB is an example of a player not feeling that he can own the position when he makes a switch. I like Denilson. I think if he can adapt to DMid, then we'd have the most skilled on-ball midfield in the Premiership (given Theo's growth this season). I think we need depth in midfield, I'm part of the brigade that believes Wenger has ultimately sold this campaign short by not adding said depth. But given that Wenger didn't, I am now content to sit back and watch Denilson's development. I think it's going to be every bit as exciting as Theo's.
yeah but hes not especially a ball winner and cesc is twice the player denilson is and ever will be from what weve seen i understood ramsey was a left midfielder before he came, he could be used on the wing for the time being
I know Denilson is not the ball winner. But predictions for the future based on the limited games Denilson has seen? I'll wait a season until I make those kind of predictions.
I'm not crying over spilled milk, but I found this article enlightening. Yaya turned down move to Arsenal this summer.
47 games isn't enough? Denilson's natural position seems to be Cesc's position, and if there was an injury, I'd expect him to assume that role ahead of Nasri/Rosicky/Diaby. Against trickier teams i'd rather have Song than Denilson in there - though I still trust song more at cb than dm. I still would rather see Toure move to midfield and have djourou or song fill in at CB - stop gap solution to eliminate the incompatible CB issue, while gaining a stronger presence in midfield. Next summer we can get a dm, or sell gallas (or both) and Toure goes back to CB.
Not over 2-3 years. He needs multiple starts in the first team. Same as we gave Clichy, same as we gave Eboue.
but we can evidently see denilson is not a defensive player his strength is his passing, not his tackling he is cescs backup and we need a player who can hold the midfield or go box to box
Song has the potential and ability to be our DM for the next 5 years if he can get that valuable experience and confidence. I think he has great technical ability and an instinct that many great central midfielders possess. I'm excited to see how he progresses. I think he is a better option to partner Cesc in midfield than Denilson. I am interested to see if Wenger continues with the Cesc-Denilson partnership in the center or if he is going to move away from that and try Cesc-Song. I guess our first big match against the big 4 (injuries aside) will show which direction Wenger will go. I do think trying Toure in the DM role would be a great experiment and I hope Wenger tries it in the Carling and/or FA Cup. I still do think we are player short both in the DM and CB positions and I think we should definately look to add to our depth in January but I'm not holding my breath. Yaya (if he continues to struggle getting games for Barca) or Toulalan would be my targets if I were Wenger but what do I know
lol has he started in the prem yet? cl games wenger regularly rotates players song needs prem gametime regularly
true... but Wenger has said the only two comps he rates are the CL and Prem... so him getting a game is a good sign I think.. but I would like to see him in the prem more...
I think with the lineup we ran yesterday, if we could have passed better, it would have looked very good. I felt like song/denilson/cesc/theo couldnt get passes going because both teams had five in the mid field. I would like to see us play the same lineup vs bolton, who will most likely play 442. Im starting to see the plan for our midfield being play whoever fits the job at the time, not have a set midfield 4 who play every match. If it works only time will tell.
from the BBC Gossip page...Turkey international Arda Turan is being watched by Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, but he could be put off by Galatasaray's £15m asking price for the 21-year-old winger. (The People)
At the beginning of the season I was very disappointed that Arsene did not bring in cover for DM or another CB. After last night's performance, its hard to still be angry with the man because of the glorious talent that he has nurtured up the youth ranks and the fact that we have started out the season with a great start. The highest importance, in my opinion, and I think I agree with Wenger at this point, is to keep the players we have for another 3-5 years. If we didn't sell 1 player, besides the ones that obviously can't make it at the top level (like J. Hoyte, Muamba, Pennant in the past), and didn't buy more than 1 player (besides replacing Gallas in a few years), for the next 5 years, I think I would be satisfied because I believe we would challenge for everything and get trophies if the team sticks together this long. If we could bring in a solid 22-26 year old CB (Albiol or even Metzelder comes to mind) with experience this coming January, then I think our club could be set for awile. I think part of Arsenal's problem in the past is that they have brought in young foreigners with immense talent who have always dreamed of playing for "big clubs" such as Madrid, Barca, Milan etc. But now that we are bringing in some great English talent (Wilshire, Gibbs, Simpson, Emmanuel-Thomas, etc). It is important to integrate them with the foreigners because they are less likely to leave our club in the future because many English players choose not to go abroad. I'm really excited about Wilshire and Gibbs particularly, and I am hoping that they eventually will break into the first team and be Gooners for their whole career.
I've written before that CB is the biggest priority on the team. Like everybody else, I wavered in the whole panic over CMs. But on the whole I still believe this. For as much complaining as we've all done about CMs, from what we've seen so far we _can_ play well there. Otoh, I think it's fair to say we haven't seen a really good game yet from the defense as a whole. And that's where the numbers situation there isn't good either.
