    I'd try this...

    GK: Given

    LB: Finnan
    CB: O'Brien
    CB: Cunningham
    RB: Carr

    LM: Duff
    CM: Healy/Miller
    CM: Holland
    RM: Reid

    CF: Doherty
    CF: Morrison

That's 4 (or 5) changes, as well as moving Duff to the wing. Kilbane did well, but couldn't get the crosses in.

As it's friendly I don't think Duff will start. The team will be purely experimental and perfect opportunity
to look our hot young prospects. i,e Butler, A Reid, Miller, (Maybe) O'flynn (shame about the injured Thornton)

    Carr or Finnan
    O'Brien
    Dunne
    Killbane Or finnan
    -------------
    S.Reid
    Miller
    Holland
    A.Reid or Killbane
    ----------
    Morrison
    Lee Or A.Reid

Butler and O'flynn on for the 2nd half.

Mind you, this is the way I would like to see it,
so, more than likely it in't going to happen this way.

I don't think Cunningham should play, since he's suspended for the Swiss match. I would say Colgan will get the start ahead of Given, too.

    I'd play...

    Gk - Colgan
    Lb - Finnan
    Rb - Kenna/Carr
    Cb - O'Brien
    Cb - Dunne
    Rm - Reid (Steven)
    Lm - Reid (Andy)
    Cm - Miller
    Cm - Healy
    Sc - Connolly
    Sc - Morrison

That means Morrison, Healy and Stevie Reid all play twice, this will help them build up their fitness as they all looked a little short of match fitness on saturday. I hope he calls in another right back (Kenna) as, with O'Shea likely to be playing centrally against Switzerland, we need options at left back and playing Finnan for the whole 90 minutes makes sense to me. If he doesn't bring in another right back, hopefully Carr, or more importantly his manager, can be convinced to play again.

Bring Butler off the bench at half time and whoever else came up from the U21s (Barrett? O'Flynn?), aswell and give them all a half. Could also use people like Doherty and Quinn off the bench too. It's a pity Thornton is injured alright.

Because there are 4 players out it should give some fringe players a good chance!!

    It reckon we could see:

    Colgan
    Carr O'Brien Breen Finnan
    Reid Holland Kilbane
    Duff
    Doherty Connolly

I wish this was the case:

    Colgan
    Carr O'Brien Dunne Finnan
    S.Reid Miller A.Reid Duff
    Morrison Doherty

The 2nd one is quite experimental, but we need to check some new options in midfield, with Andy Reid getting forward & linking with the front 2, Thornton would be in there, but I think he is injured.

And it seems he's not drafting in anyone from the U21s. Very disappointing I think, I never thought of all the things I'd slag off Kerr for that reluctance to blood youth would be one of them.

What's the point of this match then? I mean, basically we'll go out there with mostly players that didn't play on saturday, against quality opposition like Turkey we'll be destroyed with a reserve side, and that's not even factoring in the needless risking of injuries as the match really serves little to no purpose.

There are probably only a couple of U21 players (Miller & Reid) who would have got selected.

I think this is an important game, a chance for Kerr to try a couple of things before the big one on Basle. Its not a time to start playing 11 young newcomers.

    Hi

What do you think Irelands starting lineup will look like for this match?

This is how I think Turkey is going to line up:

    .................Rüstü

    Fatih....Alpay....Bülent....Ergün

    Okan....Tugay.....Emre.....Ibrahim

    .................Tuncay

    ..................Sükür

We are missing a few players (Nihat, Bastürk and Ilhan) so this is not the strongest Turkish team possible.

Players you should look out for: Tuncay (best turkish talent) and Emre

I'd of picked Miller Reid and Butler.

But what can Kerr try? It's unlikely the clubs will allow their players to be played twice in three days with one of those matches being a meaningless friendly, so we'll get at most a half out of those who started on saturday, if even that.

    We'll end up playing...

    Colgan
    Harte
    Finnan
    Dunne
    O'Brien
    Quinn
    Reid
    McPhail
    Kinsella
    Connolly
    Doherty

And the Turks will probably end up putting 3 past us.

I'd much rather see Miller play instead of either central mid fielder, or Reid (Andy) tried instead of a second division player, as those are the players who in the long run we'll be looking at to do a job for us. Otherwise it's a fairly pointless exercise, unless Kerr somehow manages to convince the club managers to allow their players play, and even then the risk of a Keane like injury out weighs anything he'd gain imo.

Too true. Turkey have some great young players coming up. That guy Tuncay was great against the US earlier this summer. He has some talent.

I'd love to see Miller in too, I saw him against Germany U21's and he looked really good. Supposedly he's getting the odd game for Celtic as well now. There are still several players in the team above with a point to prove though.

I don't really believe in the meaningless friendly thing, the more games the Irish players play together against good teams the better IMO. Especially with such an important game up next.

Father Ted, yep Tuncay is great. He is a real goal scoring machine. He is current topscorer for our U21 team and turkish league topscorer with 5 goals in 4 games and he made 2 assist in our game against Liechtenstein last saturday.
You can watch his great assist here if you are interested (the goal is also very good):

Can you download Duffs great goal against Russia somewhere on the internet? Id like to see that one again.

    Score predictions anyone?

My optimism has run out: Ireland 1-3 Turkey.

If it was a full strenght side I'd be confident, but given the amount of players likely to be rested, I'm going for a Turkey win, 1-2 or 1-3.

My guess at the team is:

    Colgan

    Finnan
    Breen
    Dunne
    Harte

    Duff
    Kinsella
    McPhail
    Kilbane

    Connolly
    Doherty

+ plenty of subs. Crowe, Murphy, O'Brien will all get run outs. Duff will not play the full match.

    Ireland vs Turkey

Contrasting fortunes accompany both teams for this friendly. The Irish drew their Euro Qualifier with Russia whereas Turkey trashed minnow Liechtenstein.

The Turks will face tougher opposition tonight, but both teams will approach this game with a mind to keeping their important players safe from injury..as they have far more important games approaching.

Fringe players may figure for both teams...for interested punters...it would be wise to go accept the 1/4 ball handicap if still available.

Our Verdict: Back Turkey and accept the 1/4 ball handicap.

ps. Backing Turkey on even handicap is still worth a wager.

    good luck!

If someone could provide in-match updates, it would be appreciated. I have class, and won't be back until well into the second half.

For what it's worth, Fanatik (Turkish sports paper) is reporting the following line-up:

Türkiye: Zafer, Fatih, Bülent, Deniz, Ergün, Tayfun, Emre, Hasan Þaþ, Ahmet Yýldýrým, Gökdeniz, Okan Yýlmaz

This is pretty weak squad. I think Ireland will win.

The only countries to benefit from this match will be Turkey and England.

I really don't see what we will get out of it.
I have never seen a friendly match played 3 days after a qualifying match before. It simply doesn't make sense. Ok turkey will have the benefit of playing against a british type team.
and Ireland will only get further demoralised because we will get stuffed. Make no mistake Turkey are a far better team than Ireland and we will be missing the one man who could possibly score a goal against them (robbie). I can't see either Doherty or Connolly having much luck against the turkish defence. Duff will be kicked to pieces and Breen and O'Brien will be shown up Breen with his lack of pace will be caught out by the fast turks and O'Brien's positional sense is all over the shop. Our midfield will be stronger than Saturday's though (I don't know why Kerr left out Kinsella..surely our strongest midfield is Kilbane or Duff on the left kinsella and Holland in the middle and healy on the right.
Ok kinsella is getting on but he is still our best option for now.

by the way why can't any of those newspaper hacks get their head round the qualifying permutations.
I've read so much rubbish in the papers even on monday when they had time to work it all out.
if we assume russia beat georgia. that leaves switz one point ahead of ire and rus.

if swiss beat russia. we need a draw to finish second.(we can't win the group even if we beat switz)

if russia beat switz.. we need to beat switz to finish second (we can't win the group).

if Switz and russia draw. we can win the group by beating Switz but a draw is no good at all.

if georgia beat both albania and russia.
then we will need to beat switz to finish second (if switz beat russia) or first (if russia beat switz or if the russia v switz match ends in a draw)

    however if Georgia beat Russia but fail to beat Albania then ;
    1) if Russia beat Switz we need a draw to finish second and a win to finish top.
    2) if Switz beat Russia or the match is drawn then we will finish second even if we lose or draw to Switz but if we beat them we will win the group.
