Post game attendances here (full capacity in brackets). A lot of stadiums seem empty in the first round... August 27 Esteli @ Montreal - 13,034 (13,034)
i dont think there were more than 5.000 fans on the alajuela game, i was expecting at least 10.000 13k people on the esteli game :O
Montreal is a non-profit organization...it gives a great deal of it's tickets away. But atleast the people showed up, however one can only speculate as to whether the masses would have shown up in such numbers if they would have to pay a full price ticket to get in. Aside from the hardcore fans, I really think that there would have been a diminished crowd if that were in fact the case. But regardless, the people showed up in great fashion...kudos Mtl.
I was at the game Montreal played vs Esteli. No tickets were free, in fact the cheapest tickets are 10$ and you don't even get a seat, there's a zone behind the nets for 10$ for standing only. The game Montreal Impact played vs. Real Esteli was 20$ or more.
Tickets were not free in Montreal. The giving tickets away era is over. The vast majority of the 13 000 that attend most games have payed for their ticket and no the average price is not 5$. Most tickets sold are 20$ and more. The Concacaf matches are actually more expensive.
If this is in fact true, then I retract that portion of my statement (whihc subsequently was most of it).
Attendances posted by CONCACAF so far... (rounded to the nearest hundred, not by choice) Leg One: Montreal vs. Esteli - 13,000 Jalapa vs. San Francisco - 1,500 Joe Public vs. New England - 2,100 Alajuelense vs. PR Islanders - 900 Cruz Azul vs. Hankook Verdes - 5,000 Tauro vs. Chivas USA - 500 Metapan vs. Marathon - 1,500 Preliminary Round: Leg One Average: 3,500 Last night New England drew 4,000
I remember reading a blog of a young man who visited madrid, visiting the 3 major stadia in the city. he was able to catch a RM game, it was a qualifier for the CL against some Scandinavian team...i remember he described the stadium as seeming completely cavernous and eerily silent. He could hear the players shouting on the field. What's the point of this commentary? That at this stage of the tournament, it is expected that attendance be less than stellar (also considering it's the first year of the tournament, and not very well organized at that). Granted, there were about 20,000 at the Santiago...but taking that into the ratio of the stadium, it's fairly comparable.
Chivas vs. Tauro - 1,821. Pathetic Esteli vs. Montreal - 1,000 - They didn't play in their home COUNTRY, so that's not too bad all things considered. Last night Marathon had a decent crowd. LOUD and decent in size. Their stadium is HUGE, so though it was empty on the ends, there were still a lot of people in that stadium. I was impressed considering the everybody else but Montreal. I didn't see the PR match, I was sleeping. Still if They did better than 4,000, MLS really blew in terms of just about everything while USL thrived. GO USL!
I don't think there were more than 4,000. It was raining all day in PR and it turned away a lot of people.
Yeah, I forgot about that weather. I have noticed the USL numbers drop down into the 2k's when the weather is awful. Either way, 2,000 would still be better than Chivas.
It is always expected to have low attendances in the preliminary stages of any tournament so let's hold on onto saying what is the profit of the CCL. As the tournament progresses, it will really depend on the teams playing. Saprissa, for example, would probably not have a packed stadium until the final if we make it that far. Reason being is that we have constantly made it to at least the last 4 (Saprissa & Alajuelense has the CONCACAF record of making it to the last 4 with 15 appearances each). Plus, this year's final was the third final we have been in 5 years. If, say, Joe Public were to even make it to the Quaterfinals, though, I am pretty sure they would have a packed stadium for every game. It depends on the team and who is playing as well how successful they are.
no reported attendance in Puerto Rico. Bummer, screws everthing up. Hankook Verdes vs. Cruz Azul - 500 Marathon vs. Metapan - 2529. Looked like more to me. Either way, 2529 rocking fans standing and chanting and singing the full 90. Still waiting on Pumas and San Francisco. If anybody knows what Puerto Rico drew we can continue to track the average.
I'm not even going to bother reporting attendance here anymore. CONCACAF reported Pumas vs. Harbour View as 1,000 attendance. Anybody who saw that match knows that's horseshit and was the best attended match of the Prelims. They also reported Hankook Verdes vs. Cruz Azul at 500 when we all know there couldn't have been more than 100 people in the stands.
According to CONCACAF... Cruz Azul vs Hankook Verdes - 5,000 Tauro FC vs Chivas USA - 500 Joe Public vs New England Revolution - 2,100 Montreal Impact vs Real Esteli - 13,034 LD Alajuelense vs Puerto Rico Islanders - 900 Metapan vs Marathon - 1,500 Deportivo Jalapa vs San Francisco - 1,500 Harbor View vs UNAM Pumas - Canceled ************************* Chivas USA vs Tauro FC - 1,821 New England Revolution vs Joe Public - 4,000 Real Esteli vs Montreal - 1,000 Puerto Rico Islanders vs LD Alajuelense - Unknown Hankook Verdes vs Cruz Azul - 500 Marathon vs Metapan - 2,529 San Francisco vs Deportivo Jalapa - 1,000 UNAM Pumas vs Harbor View - 10,000 An average of 3,052 fans per game and a total of just over 45,000. That is basically rarely filling up a small World Cup stadium.
You know exactly how legit some of these attendances are when they are rounded to the nearest thousand. Still, Pumas drew more than 10k. The side the camera to pointed away from was more crowded than the side it was pointed at, and that stadium seats like 70,000.
Did you see the other side of the stadium. Probably 30-40% more than the side the camera was pointed at.
I think you are underestimating how many people actually fit in the Olympic stadium, believe me, I've been there many many times, and the places that are harder to fill are exactly the east and west upper sections, on the lower bowl of the stadium you can't seat more than 20k, and in the north and south sections together you can't seat more than 10k, the bulk of the fans (the other 40k) seat on either the west section (palomar) or the east section (pebetero), after all the Olimpico is the second largest stadium in Mexico, the only thing is that it was build after stadiums of old American universities, and it looks a bit flat and not as impressive as other large stadiums. I think that at the very least 20k fans showed up for the match, but it seems very likely that they were more. BTW you have to consider that the stadium is right across the main part of the UNAM campus and that most afternoon classes finish at 8 PM, so it's not rare for some students to finish class and go to the stadium to grab a beer and watch Pumas, on the other hand if instead of HV from Jamaica we had played a Brazilian or Argentinian side, the stadium would have sold out. ---------------------EDIT I just had a look at the data from Concacaf and there's many factor of why it could be skewed, I don't know how they did their computations but it probably was by tickets sold and not people present, in that case they are probably not factoring the Pumas season ticket holders, to which this game and actually all of the Concacaf Champions League is free, also there's giveaways, new students and some faculty members receive free tickets for unattractive games such as this one.
