I agree. Chastain and Balboa were made for one another. I literally muted the T.V. during Brazil v Belgium this morning. Everything about his comments are annoying. He is living off the fact that most of his NBC colleagues no absolutely nothing of the game and as a result don't realize he is a complete moron.

Balboa is a moron unlike the world has ever seen. Truly an embarrassment.

I convinced one of my friends starting watching the USA soccer matches with me during the Olympics. The guy has never seen or played soccer at any level before the Olympics. Even he could tell that Balboa, or "the idiot guy" had no idea what he was talking about.

What is weird is that NBC actually did well to find good announcers for other sports. I for example, knew little to nothing about most of the events in the Olympics, but the announcers were usually quite good at explaining the details and intricateness of each event.

Therefore, I think it is particularly pathetic that someone who knows nothing of the sport, can say with confidence that the announcer is terrible.

Atleast NBC didn't bring in Dave O' Boring to call the Olympic Soccer Matches, right?
I do agree with you guys though, Balboa did a very poor job in calling the Games in My opinion. And since when is he(Balboa) a World Cup "STAR"?

While I am soooo happy the season started again, I am still having a lot of trouble trying to understand the Scottish co-commentators..
-With apology to all Scots !

    I just can't understand you guys !

Why is it that they all have scots co-commentators?? ?

with the exception of the very brilliant Derek Rae.

Really hope we get the stadium feeds at least some of the time this year, it is easy to tell that lots of people watching of different net works feel the same, most of Asia gets the guys at the grounds, it makes a huge difference especialy if its not a big game as that is where the real art of a quality anouncer is seen.

I do not like to criticize commentators on their "style" , because that is often a matter of taste. But when an announcer has no idea what he is talking about (and I am not talking opinion, but lack of knowledge of fact), that is what I find most annoying. The announcer in this case is Daniel Arreola (must remember to spell it with two 'r' s) and the match to which I refer is the second leg of the Spanish Supercopa. In order to explain why he is such a dunce, I have to talk about the match scoring, so...

    ******SPOILER ALERT*********

Valencia won the first leg at home 3-2. In the return leg, Real went out to a 4-1 lead before Valencia scored a goal early in the 5-minutes added time to make it 4-2. Mr. Arreola then proceded to talk about how Valencia is just playing out the time, since of course they would need two more goals to win the cup, and then goes on a extended tirade about how the tie has been determined, so the referee should not have the teams play out the extended added time. Of course, in reality if Valencia were to score the next goal, they would tie in aggregate goals - 6 (3-2, 3-4), and would WIN the cup by virtue of their 4 away goals to Real's 2.

Christopher Sullivan must be living in his own little soccer world. A typical example of a game he might be calling.

FSC Announcer: "What do you think of (X Player)? Do you think he fits in well on his new team?"

Sullivan: "Watch how they moved it up the flank, outpaced the right back and he failed to deliver on the cross."

Sometimes its like he doesn't even realize there is another guy talking.

well, not sure what happened to La Liga in week 1? The stadium anouncers are not the same as in previous seasons and are actualy worse than some of the 'in house' i have heard! The guy doing the Espanyol game made it sound like a college game and struggled with his english? Has a new company taken over the 'world rights' for La Liga?

From what I know, the guys doing La Liga these past years have been replaced due to... money. The new guys, whoever they are, make less than half per game, so there you have a $trong rea$on. Nobody cares that Breen Turner and the rest of the guys were better, actually much better. They just aren't coming back, unless a miracle comes, I guess. And even in this case I pretty much doubt it...:(

I would wager a guess to say over 50% of the soccer commentators in this country think the away goal counts double in two-legged aggregate series. They just never seem to get that rather simple rule correct.

Sadly, when you get right down to it, its more than just lacking soccer knowledge, having a poor voice and being completely uninteresting. Most of these commentators just aren't very bright ...

Thanks for the info Luis Figo (what a player he was), is this true, it comes down to money? Do you work in the business to know this? Do these guys earn so much more for it to make a difference? I really missed hearing Paul Breen-Turner doing Real Madrid, ever since i started watching La Liga it has nearly always been his voice:(.

I tell you guys, my dream is still to have the option on the tv to turn off the commentators and still have the crowd noise on TV.

This would be the best use of the secondary audio channel ever. And so simple, as well as welcome.

I generally choose to watch GolTV in Spanish (I don't speak Spanish) to avoid Schoen and Hudson (who seem to get all the "big" games). I'd much rather just hear the crowd.

Same for anything on FSC involving Christian Miles.

I also watch Gol TV in Spanish, and I don't understand it anymore than the very basics. I would mute Fox, but I really like the crowd noise. I have the same problem when I watch NHL center ice and the regional announcers are terrible.

We get the US based ESPN commenators doing the La Liga, the majority of the commenatotrs are okay, Derek Rae and Tommy Symith pairing is exelent together and there are some other good ones out there out there just as long as they don't have a really strong annoying american accent I can handle it.

Tommy Smyth is a bit of a muppet though. Apparently he said something intelligent one day, but I must have missed it.

Yeah, Figo was excellent... I tell you my sources are very close to the deal. PBT ant the other 2 guys used to do the matches from Madrid, not in the stadium as you thought. As you may be aware, they were doing a hell of a job for you guys not noticing it!!

Now the games are being done in Barcelona, where they pay less than half to commentators (around 100$ now per game), and don´t have to pay for flight and hotel expenses for the other guys. It is the same company, Mediapro, just other way of managing tv rights.

There you have a reason... PBT and the other guys weren´t given a chance, really. Bad for them, bad for Gol TV, I guess.

Holy cow! Do you work at GOL TV Luis Figo? I can hardly beleive that Breen Turner and co were not in the stadiums, incredible, those guys have gone up in my opinion a thousand times (I still cant beleive they were not there)! This medipro outfit have made one hell of a mess up, they had the best in the business, i would be supprised if GOL TV were not going to complain as well as the other TV networks, we were in a bar in Bangkok and the local guys were all complaining about it!

I don´t work at Gol TV. But I know Paul and Carlos and Marcos, having worked for Mediapro in Madrid. Mediapro don´t care about commentators, they don´t even know these guys go on air. Initiatilly it was meant to be sort of guide-announcers for foreign televisions, but I guess they were good enough to go on air, as it was found out. You could hear these guys in Malaysia, Thailand, China, etc.
Mediapro has gambled, but they usually never lose. I don´t think they are coming back... unless all these stations complain a lot, which is unlike to happen.
