Probably no Blanco for Chicago either, although that is not assured since he played less than 90 last night. At his age, though, back-to-back games are pretty tough.

I assume we'll see Buddle and Gordon, as well as some of the younger players like Ely. I could see both Klein and Randolph in the midfield if they use Dominguez.

Confirmed: Becks is on his way to China now.

Blanco played 20 minutes last night but the newswire says he's training with the MNT.

It SUCKS that Becks isn't playing. That's probably the main reason why ESPN picked up the game. So, no Landon OR Becks?

Beckham needs to get his priorities straight with the Galaxy and play with his club team as much as possible. The MLS season will be done soon enough and then he can play in all the friendlies he wants.

Actually he isn't playing because he is in china for the oympic ceremony.....

Donvan and Eddie lewis are going to be at the game. It's bruce's decision to play them or not.

I agree they got to stop letting him do whatever he wants just because he is David Beckham....

Stop

This is by far the wisest and smartest statement made on these boards in about 2 months.

Rest of you should read it, and re-read it, and re-read it again. Til it is a mantra into your beckham PR bombarded, subliminated minds.

Also, could someone please give some backdround on Eddie Lewis and how good is he and how did we acquire him?

I can possibly help you out there. I've only seen him play about 80 times so it might not be comprehensive.

He's definately better than what we currently have, both at left back and left midfield. He is solid when used defensively, as he was for a lot of the time he was at Leeds, can actually distribute the ball well which currently the G's can't.

He won't be sprinting past the fullback to get to the byline but he's got a good cross if put in the right positions.

He was only the fifth foreign player to be awarded the Fans Player of the Year award for LUFC, after Albert Johanneson in the 1960's and recently Tony Yeboah, Harry Kewell and Mark Viduka.

He'll always be remembered as a very popular guy at Leeds, and has the best wishes of the fans, as evidenced by a huge number of good luck messages posted when news of this transfer came out. Partly this was because he was close to the fans, he joined in with the fans after the Playoff final defeat to Watford.

Loves free-kicks as well. This was one of his best

And I'll remember it because I was behind the goal and tore my ankle ligaments in the celebration.

He has lost a lot of pace of late, but wasn't bad for Derby.

Apparently he was made available for free transfer by them. Leeds were interested in re-signing him, but Derby wanted the £250,000 that they paid us for him back, and the coaches decided that it was too much for a player who'd be second choice.

Oh for f*ck sake

Players must be released for pre-match preparations as follows:
a)
for a friendly match : 48 hours
b) for a qualifying match in an international tournament : four days (excluding the matchday).
The release period is extended to five days if the match concerned is held in a different
confederation from the one in which the player's club is registered .
c) for a qualifying match in an international tournament an a date reserved for friendly
matches: 48 hours (except for dates which a confederation has reserved for a qualifying
match by the given deadline, in which case the release is for 4-5 days).
d) for the finals of an international tournament: 14 days before the first match in the
tournament.

From FIFA's own guidlines. Every other club had to release their players, its just other leagues have the bloody sense to postpone games that clash. MLS is going to be a big league in future with, I imagine, several international players on each team. How is it going to manage this situation in future?

Also Beckham has been contracted to London 2012 since before he signed for Galaxy.

Frankly the league is responsible for this situation as is every other league around the world, including the Premier League. Time for you to put the question to Mr Garber I think.....

WHEN is Beckham going to score again??? He's stuck at 5 goals at one was an empty netter. He SHOULD be able to score at least 10 a year.

I KNOW he's a set up guy but he hasn't really been doing that very well either lately. He needs to pick up his game. The better he does the more it raises the profile of soccer stateside.

No shit captain obvious. Tell us something new and insightful. As for scoring 10 goals, why should he be able to do that? In the very next sentence you say he is a set up man.

I don't have a problem with Becks going away for FIFA dates because I know I would never stand for a club trying to prevent an American player from playing with the national team on a FIFA match day. Therefore, I wouldn't want my club preventing players from playing for their country. I also don't think a player has an obligation to favor their club over their country for a friendly. That is a personal decision for the player, not for the supporters of his club or country.

Shouldn't Becks be back with his club training instead of taking a field trip to Beijing for the closing ceremonies? The club that brought him over to win championships. The club where he's being paid millions and millions in salary and endorsements. The club that's in danger of missing the playoffs - AGAIN?

With Lalas gone, maybe Bruce will put an end to all this crap. Not that I want the Galaxy to be good - just for Becks to focus on what he's being paid to do, build up soccer in this country.

Beckham has been under contract to support the London 2012 games since 2004/05, even before London was allocated the Olympics Beckham was part of the bid organization.

So the guy has a contract to attend the hand over ceremony in Bejing, that pre-dates his Galaxy signing.

He’d still be going to Bejing even if he was still signed to Real Madrid.

Beckham is huge in Asia, so you can understand the London Olympic management leveraging his image as a contemporary Londoner.

You have to be very naive not to realize that these type of events and commitments were already know to both the Galaxy and MLS before Beckham agreed to come! They involve big big money and were carefully negotiated before the contract was signed.

I venture to say that without the flexibility to play for England or to perform similar promotional events Beckham wouldn’t have come to the Galaxy.

Not withstanding the FIFA regulations concerning clubs being required to make players available for international duty.

And if Donovan or any other play had similar opportunities they’d do exactly the same.

Beckham-mania was at its height in 2001, when adoring crowds followed his every move on visits to Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand with Manchester United. At one time 7% of the mighty Man United revenues came from Beckham merchandise.

One Bangkok fan placed a sculpture of his idol in a Buddhist temple, while a three-metre (10-foot) chocolate image of the young midfielder was created in Japan.

During the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea, Beckham's distinctive mohawk hairdo spawned legions of imitators. In 2003, 1,000 screaming fans greeted him as he arrived in Japan with Real Madrid.

Nov 07, Beckham played in front of huge crowds in Sydney and Wellington, with 15,000 schoolchildren turning up just to watch him train.

And the Galaxy tour in March 08 has not been without its moments. Hundreds of fans and media caused chaos at a Shanghai hospital when Beckham visited leukaemia patients there.

Nice post

No American playing in the EPL can be prevented by the English employers from being selected for the US national team.

So Americans like Brad Friedel, Brad Guzan, Tim Howard, Jonathan Spector would be released from club games for to play for the USA.

http://ussoccerplayers.typepad.com/ussoccerplayers/2008/08/american-abro-4.html#more

I can't mention Tim Howard without quoting some great fan chants from Everton

He's got Tourettes
he guards the US nets
He's Tim Howard
He's Tim Howard

and the classic (Mary Poppins)

tim timmery
tim timmery
tim tim terooo
Tim Howards got tourettes

and he says, "F*** you

Beckham has a duty to play for his country, as does Donovan. International games take precedent over any MLS games.

I am still waiting to see how having beckham here in LA is really helping us. No playoffs last year(i know he was injured) likely none this year the way things are looking. We could come up with a lot of excuses, but this is getting ridiculous. We should expect titles, not praying to make the payoffs year after year.

I am still hoping this works out, yes we get more type of fans at the game, but how long will they hang around after BEckham retires or if we continue playing lousy soccer.

Yes. England was preparing for World Cup qualifying. Given that UEFA is a lot tougher than CONCACAF, I would say they need to play as a team as much as possible, even if it is in friendlies before qualification starts.
