I going to be heading to town to cover the games on the 2nd and 6th. I have a few questions and would love it if anyone could clue me in a little:

Can I assume that the Thursday game will be in the evening?

If I stay downtown in the financial district, will I be able to walk/light rail to the stadium, a grocery store, etc?

What would be good microbreweries in that same area? ;)

And how hard would it be to get public transpo to Oregon for the Pilots match?

    Many thanks,

Downtown Portland is relativelly small and very pedestrian-transit friendly. It's a short walk to and from anywhere DT. PGE Park is close. If I don't take liht rail, I usually park my car DT and walk to Piggy (as I like call our stadium) when I go to Timbers matches. Light rail goes through DT and will drop you off at Piggy on its way west.

As for local microbreweries, DT has only a few, but they're all over the city. My favorites are the Lucky Lab on SE Hawthorne and the Laurelwood in the Hollywood District. If I had to drink DT, I'd go to the McMenamins near Portland State University. The Bridgeport Brewery is in the Pearl/Northwest area near DT and is near the streetcar line.

Go to www.nwbrewpage.com for a good guide to microbrews in the Northwest.

The Bitter End (www.bitterendpub.com), located on West Burnside a block from Piggy, doesn't brew its own beer, but a local brewery supplies it with a Bitter End Bitter. It's the Timbers Army gathering spot before and after matches.

    There's a Safeway DT on SW 10th/Jefferson.

Now that the Portland Timbers season is over it's time to get ready for some World Cup action.

I'll be headed there too... no word on whether my little hooligans are with me or not.

Pape Field is in the same complex with Autzen Stadium and the Moshofsky Center. It's actually not the easiest place to find just by looking around town (trees, trees, and more trees). Pape is west of the Moshofsky Center (football team's indoor practice facility, big building, hard to miss from Centennial Blvd), which is west of Autzen.

Coming down from Portland, I-5 to Eugene.

Exit 194 is I-105, I believe the first exit is westbound, towards Eugene proper. You want that first exit.

You'll want to take the Coburg Road / U of Oregon exit (the next exit) off I-105, about a mile and a half from I-5. On the off-ramp, stay left, as you'll head south on Coburg Road for a couple blocks, awaiting the next set of signal lights AFTER getting on Coburg Road.

Now this is where I've lost my memory (and I am a Duck). You want to get on Centennial Blvd going eastbound. When I went to school, you could make a simple left turn at the light. You may still be able to do that, OR you may have to wait for a loop road on the right that swings you around and eventually on to Centennial... as long as you follow the signs and don't end up on the freeway again. The stadium will be rather obvious on your right after passing a few establishments and a few more trees..

    I hope this helps.

BTW, I have a temptation to stop in Corvallis for a 3 pm men's match between Oregon State and UCLA. Corvallis is about an hour from Eugene in normal traffic. If I'm alone, I may just pull that one... how often can you see two defending national champions live on the same day, after all?

    Portland, Oregon!
Let's post this in updated fashion. Helps to have friends still in town.

I-5 to Eugene. Exit 194B to I-105 westbound.

Mile and a half to the Coburg Road / U of Oregon exit. Take the exit, stay left to go south. There is a stoplight at the end of the long off-ramp at Coburg Road. The NEXT stoplight on Coburg Road is Centennial Blvd, now MLK Blvd (the street sign currently shows both, apparently), you can turn left.

The stadium will be apparent on the right, but the first parking lot entry (the preferable one) is easy to miss because there's a sign pointing to a nearby planetarium, you're navigating a curve, it comes up rather suddenly. You want to make that entry. There's usually a small "Soccer Parking Here" sign, but that's easy to miss (in my experience).

Weather: it's Oregon, be prepared for rain. It rains more in Eugene than in Portland, because the foothills are closer to town, it can certainly happen then. However, early October usually means indian summer, so it's mild, but it will likely be in the 50s in the second half (rain or no). You'll have to deal with your hatred, though I do remember a Colorado lad who wore shorts in Eugene for a full school year without getting sick.

Paul, I'd totally be into going to the doubleheader if you want someone to tag along and split the gas fees. Will you be in Portland for the Oct. 2 WWC games? We can discuss then. No karaoke this time.

I am going October 2, and we just determined late last night that I'm traveling solo.

I can certainly take you along on the 3rd.

The question is whether anyone else wants to go. With more negotiation, I could bring a minivan. Think I should post that on soccercityusa.com (tonight, at home, where I'm not firewalled from the site :( ).

BTW, I personally don't mind the karaoke. It's the people in the square mileage assaulted with my voice that should concern us.

    Look-out, tourist coming through.
I'm staying at the Mallory Hotel on Oct. 5th, is there somewhere to go right there for pregame or should I head into downtown and then wander back over to PGE. I gather that everything is relatively close to each other from reading the other posts.
You locals assigning a pregame pub/beverage assistance center that some of us out o'towners can show-up and participate amongst or is everyone on their own?

Too bad McMenamin's-Edgefield is having Oktoberfest in Sept, I'm staying there on Oct 6th, go-figger.

PGE Park ready for group D matches

Portland's PGE Park has grass laid down and additional grandstands installed for Sunday's group D matches, as well as next week's quarterfinal and semifinal matches.

I was able to get into the stadium today and have a few pictures:

The best place to meet before and after games is the Bitter End Pub (20th and W. Burnside) which is right across the street from the stadium. It is where Timbers fans always gather.

If you have kids along you could take them to the Kingston which is also right across from the stadium.

As for backpacks, they will certainly check them but you should be ok with water bottles. Food might be more of a problem as I'm sure they'll want you to buy their overpriced foods.

    seating question......

Hi All!!! I can't wait to get into your beautiful town again!! I have 2 questions for you natives.

#1-How far is Mt. St. Helens from Portland? I understand that along the way, from the southern route, there are caverns, like the Carlsbad Caverns. Is that a day-long trip from Portland? Can you go there and be back in a few hours?
#2-I will be sitting in the East side. A friend has decided to make the trip up, but can only get a 200+ seat. Being that they only have bench seating on the east side, do you all think it would be a problem to get her over to sit with me? Is security really strict there?
I know it is bending the rules, and I respect anyone that would think that is not cool. I'm still asking, though........

    Re: seating question......

If you want to see the volcano is on the northside the caves are on the south so it would take a whole day to see both and I am not sure if it is like Carlsbad Caverns. Give yourself 3 to 4 hours to see everything this includes the drive up and back from Portland.
Security will not let your freind into the east Bleechers. Everytime I went back and forth fron the South bleechers they wanted to see my ticket.

The Bitter End - right across from the park is the Timbers Army hang out and a good bet to chill with local footy fans.
