SERIE A / Juventus TV Coverage??

Discussion in 'Juventus' started by lupevalez, Aug 14, 2003.

  1. Hi. I really enjoyed watching Juventus play here in America. Is there any way people in the USA can watch Juventus and Serie A this upcoming season? Does FoxSportsWorld carry Juventus / Serie A matches? Thanks!

Unless you have RAI International or GolTV, the only way you'll be able to catch Juve is on ESPN2 during the Champions League.

FSW might be showing the Coppa Italia again so that would be one other option. There is no English language coverage of Serie A for now.

  3. Thanks!

bummer. hopefully fsw will get their act together and help we Serie A fans out.

    Hey Lupe,

It ain't easy being a Serie A fan in the U.S. but there are options (if you can afford them!)
As Dante said there is no American broadcast coverage of the Serie A - I'm in NY & watch both live & delayed matches from Italy via RAI Italia & RAI International on digital cable (here in Central NY, I have to pay an extra $9.95 a month in addition to regular digital cable charges to get the RAI Italia channel as they show live coverage all morning & afternoon Saturday while RAI International has only one-day tape delay broadcast of one match on Sunday).
My cable bill is outrageous but well worth it just to watch my beloved Bianconeri :)
Be aware though that there are usually only two Serie A matches shown per Saturday, so you may only be able to see Juve play probably about 6-9 times on average - in addition, the broadcast is from Italy so all match commentary & pregame/postgame shows are in Italian - surprise!
Anyway, here's a link to a list of cable companies in the US that carry RAI:

The other option as Dante stated is GOL TV which is exclusively via satellite on Dish network.
Regarding the final option, unfortunately, ESPN2 will only be carrying the Champions League for a short while longer - after the start of 2004 ESPN Desportes (a new ESPN Spanish channel) will take over exclusive coverage :(
Not sure how to pickup Desportes, my digital provider currently does not carry it - whether it will become widely available on digital or not I honestly can't say.

I would expect that ESPN will wait until the majority of satellite or digital providers carry ESPN Deportes before launching it. There has been some discussion on the business & media board about it.

GolTV will be coming to digitial cable in some areas soon. Cablevision (NJ/NY/CT) has agrred to carry it, not sure of any others. Won't be on DirectTV anytime soon though. I think I remember reading GolTV does to English commentary on SAP, but I could be wrong.

ESPN Deportes is supposed to launch early in 2004, I would expect to see it on DirectTV, Dish, and many digital cable systems. Not sure if ESPND will do a SAP broadcast for the CL, that would be nice.

Where in Central NY are you?

I too have to pay an additional $9.95 for RAI International because Time Warner doesn't carry it here. Time Warner in Queens carries it in their digital package though.

    Hey Dante,
I'm in Syracuse - Time Warner just started offering individual international channels here about 5 months ago so I was more than happy to subscribe to RAI Italia. You're in Binghamton, NY? - I just sort of glance over folks locations & assumed you were Binghamton, UK :)
Anyway, have you heard anything at all as to whether Time Warner might be picking up ESPN Desportes on digital (or GOL TV?) I'm really pi**ed about ESPN2 dropping Champions League coverage.
I would assume you made the short hike to the Meadowlands to check out our boys in black & white a couple weeks ago? For the Thursday night game vs. ManU, my seats were prime lower center field, however (as most Juve fans), we were surrounded by ManU supporters, including a bunch of chaps from the UK a couple rows behind us who gleefully serenaded us at the top of their lungs ALL night long with chants & ditties (such is football).
Sunday, however was a different story altogether at the Super Cup - my seats were in the Juventus Supporter section in the FIRST row just to the right of goal (woohoo). Obviously I was amongst some of the more 'exuberant' Juve fans (I speak & understand quite a bit of Italian but I won't translate here what my rowmates were shouting & chanting at the Milan players all match long!).
It was nearly as exciting just being in that section as the game itself & when Trez knocked in the equalizer in the dying moments of OT it was pure madness (& utter bliss) all the way round!
To top it all off, the penalty kicks were held right in front of us - not more than 25-30 feet away & I'm pretty certain it was my shouts of encouragement that gave Gigi the extra incentive to make his save on Brocchi's kick ;)
    A great day indeed!

milan milan...vafancu** !!!! YEah, those italians in the front were pretty vocal. I must have been 2 rows behind you...was in 140 row 3 near the aisle with 2 girls..we were all wearing juventus attire. I had a great time. I'll never forget the emotions when Trez scored. We all were hoarse by the restart!

Yep, Binghamton, NY. Actually it's Chenango Bridge, but we're just a suburb of Binghamton. Time Warner offers RAI International for you guys? They don't here, although they have about 5 Spanish channels and a few Indian (no clue why because there are practically ZERO people of Indian descent in the area). It's weird because there is a very large Italian population in Endicott. As for GolTV or ESPNDeportes I have no clue.

As for seeing Juve, yeah I went to the Coppa Italia game. It was great.

    Hey Forza,
Me & my lady were indeed in Section 140, Row 1, Seats 6 & 7 right next to "those italians" :)
They were actually pretty nice guys however they ended up in hot water with the 'Drill Sergeant' lady usher seated at the front railing (who throughout the day was battling broken english speaking spectators who would not clear the aisles).
First off, there were five of them sitting next to us, however they actually only had tickets for THREE seats in the front row so two of them stayed in a semi-crouch in the aisle.
They might have pulled this off had they not insisted on smoking throughout the entire match (unfortunately prohibited in the Stadium) - by late second half she eventually caught sight of one of them puffing away & she descended on them like a rampaging elephant, pinning us against the back of our seats as she squeezed her considerable girth down the aisle.
As she began her scolding she noticed the two squatters & then all heck really broke loose as she virtually dragged them off by their ears - they did not go quietly of course, but their fractured english pleas were as futile as those offered up by Juve to Pierluigi Collina when he called for the Milan penalty kick.
Some supporters in the section also vocalized their displeasure at her harsh treatment by cascading her with boos but this woman was obviously a hardened Jersey veteran of the 'stadium wars' & thus totally unfazed & unstoppable.
Anyhow, the squatters somehow made their way back down after Juve had won (to a chorus of cheers from many in the section), just in time to be featured on camera cheering madly for the victory by the YES TV network - I was also in the shot but the camera crew's main focus was on them.
In fact, they also appeared prominently in two or three other Television crowd shots throughout the match & having viewed the broadcast twice (I have it permanently preserved in all it's glory on DVD), I'd have to say they were the most identifiable Juventus supporters captured on camera as the director returned to them several times as stated!
Anyway, here they are as seen thru MY camera lens:

hahhaha...thanks, your description brings back many vivid memories of the atmosphere in our section! Cheers. I'll post some of my pictures taken from row 3 when I get them developed. I took 3 rolls with my Nikon SLR.
