All you need to know about this guy can be found here: https://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?t=725865 I am assuming since the SD fans aren't happy about him leaving, we should be happy about him arriving. That's usually how these things work, but don't hold me to that.
I wouldn't do that, not when I can link directly to the 4-0 drubbing. Given the chance, I'm sure he'd be a starter. There was a line from the S8C boards back in 2005 that should give you a good sense of the man, "Guerrero is the new Ditka."
Wow. A very good deal just became great. Niell was making $150,000 and this is going to cost DC less than that. They don't play the same position but this is a massive upgrade for DC. I'm very excited to see how he does with players like Gallardo, Moreno, and Fred. This gives DC an outrageous amount of speed on the flanks between Ivan, Fred, and Martinez and hopefully this will help pull Fred out of his slump because opposing teams can't key on him as well.
I think Tino replaces Niell. Between Guerrero, Burch and Martinez I don't think there will be much room for Fred on the left. He should slide out right, where his natural right footed tendencies should increase his effectiveness. So where does that leave Tino? Answer ... withdrawn forward. For example now that Moreno is covering for Gallardo you have a perfect opportunity to play Tino up top. Of course Tino will still be a backup option on the right. Of course I could be way off. In the end Soehn might just decide to slide Martinez back to the middle, put Guerrero at left back and keep Fred at left mid. Burch and McTavish come off the bench in this scenario which leaves Tino stuck at right mid. IMO this would be a mistake ... but the way Soehn's been lining things up I wouldn't be surprised. My ideal lineup : ------------------Wells Namoff---McTavish-----Peralta------Martinez -----------------Simms Fred--------------------------------Guerrero -----------------Gallardo ---------Emilio----------Moreno subs : Quaranta for Moreno, Burch for Martinez or Guerrero, Doe for Emilio.
A good trade on a number of fronts: * Gives DCU a true, two way left-sided mid with speed - he was very good in his Chicago days. It is hard to judge his San Jose games since it is an expansion team with a weak offense. * With Olsen's injury, Guerrero should be the starting LM even when all of the other injured players return. Fred flips to RM - Quaranta becomes the first offensive option on the bench for AM, RM/LM, or F and hopefully knocks Dyachenko down the bench (i.e. if Gallardo is out, put Moreno at AM and Quaranta at F - if Guerrero is out, Fred plays LM and Quaranta plays RM). * His left-sided versatility (LM or LB) is a plus * We do not have to trot out Thompson or Cordeiro at first team LM - they can develop their game in the reserves * Comes to the team ready to play unlike some foreign acquisitions who sometimes get their start date stretched out to Visa issues and lack of game conditioning. He is a known quantity in MLS as opposed to running a bunch of foreign trialists through the paces hoping that they can stick. * Salary $ are no worse than a wash with Niell's $ from which little value was gained - his salary $ are reasonable for a good veteran starting mid. * A partial allocation is not much to give up for a starter at a need position I see minimal downside: * Will miss games anytime that Honduras plays * He is too short to play goalie
Holy crap, a starting-caliber true flank player. Outside of Olsen - who is so good he can play anywhere - when was the last time we had even one of those on our team? I think it might have been Earnie Stewart Guerrero seems to hand us our heads every time we play him. If nothing else, this keeps him off of the field against us. I love the deal. The pieces on our team just started fitting together a whole lot better.
Actually, I'm sure he did. With SJ huge influx of players this window (Most of them being left sided players), Ivan Was Bumped to the bench and the people on the SJ boards were seeing him as the next person out the door. Also those 147,000 other reasons might be a factor too.
Goff says a portion of his salary will be picked up by San Jose for this season. All the more reason to be pleased by the trade.
I really liked this guy at SJ. SUCKS to lose him. We simply did not have a team he could engage with for most of the season, but if you look at his performance when we beat Houston he was phenomenal. Things are getting done haphazardly in SJ and Guerrero is a casualty. God forbid we have some depth of talent out here. Lucky you guys. Best to Ivan.
The answer to your question is DUH! 1. He is a latin american player surrounded by latin american talent like Gallardo, Moreno, Fred, Martinez, etc. Language and style of play must be of his interest. 2. As much as he heard our team in the past, let's face it, he had DCUnited envy. He is now part of the best organization in MLS. 3. DCU plays in SuperLiga, Concacaf Champions, etc. That international exposure keeps his chances intact to be seen back at home (national team) or bigger leagues (if he has the hunger). 4. He WILL start for us immediately. If he blows his chance, he wont start once all players are healthy, but the starting job is for him to screw up.
Seems to me this guy is the player that marc burch wishes he was. And since SJ will be picking up part of the tab for him I see no reason to not be excited.
I don't disagree with everyone about him wanting to come here, because I thought of most of those reasons as well. But you never know if he had family somewhere, or just prefers CA all of a sudden. Player movement is a bit unpredictable that way. It's a great move on paper, that's for sure.
there's 50% chance of "Fire Guerrero" and 50% chance of "Guerrero is best DC player ever" threads in next 2 weeks
Yes. Same salary as Niell and SJ is paying a portion to boot. I believe Doe has taken Niell's slot. So, we have 4 forwards in Luci, Jaime, Doe and Tino. Looks like Osario is still pissing off Fire fans with this.
He'll be good for you guys, I have a good feeling about it. I don't know about any other Quakes fans, but this one is a tough one for me to see. Guererro was always one of our positives when we were way down in the cellar earlier this season. Good luck, Ivan, and congratulations DC fans.
While Doe essentially took Niell's spot as a reserve forward on the bench, Doe was acquired before these recent senior roster moves. By recently cutting Niell and Carvallo, it opened spots for Guerrero and Vide. If/when another goalie is acquired to compete with Wells for the starting spot, a senior roster spot would need to be opened via another player getting cut or put on season-ending IR (i.e. Olsen or more likely Mediate on IR) or less likely, moving a senior roster player to the developmental roster and then cutting one of those developmental players. On another note, the DCU press release confirms that Guerrero can not play for DCU in the USOC since he is already cup-tied to San Jose.
Well judging from everyone's reactions, seems like a good coup. Anyone know how long the deal is for? (I may have missed it earlier in the thread)
