I saw the US Men's Olympic team is going to be training in San Jose, starting July 20th, before heading to Beijing.. Anyone know any details?

From what I could find (here and here) just looks like they'll be processing US Athletes at SJSU, and none of it is open to the public. I'm not sure if that's all they're doing there. There is that other post about them training at Stanford so maybe some stuff will be open to the public over there?

Too bad the Quakes didn't play our Olympic team instead of Honduras - oh well.

You mean the one that lost to Honduras? Yes, I'd rather have seen a bigger margin of defeat.

Off-topic. But the US Olympic swimming team is practicing over at Stanford until the 24th. They have two sessions one starting at 7 am, and the second from 3 PM to 6 PM.

The U.S. men's team lost to that Honduras team? Really? Wow. Our chances don't look too good in Beijing.

Can we assume that the Men's futbol team will also be around until the 24th? And if so, maybe the Quakes FO is reading this and will arrange an impromptu exhibition sometime before the Men's team flies to Beijing. That would be a great opportunity for both sides. Men's team gets a game of playing together under their belt before the Olympics and our Quakes give our new guys more playing time to gel with the rest of the team.

Three Apples seems to have some good quality info on this topic. According to what he posted on a different message board all the Olympic athletes will be going through San Jose before leaving the country.

I know the swimmers are headed to Singapore on the 24th before going to China and from what ThreeApples posted the soccer players are headed to Hong Kong on the 20th IIRC.

A US side that was resting its first choice players as they had already qualified...

    from that game:
    18-Dominic Cervi; 15-Kamani Hill, 3-Michael Orozco, 4-Pat Ianni, 13-Hunter Freeman (6-Maurice Edu, 26); 7-Stuart Holden (2-Marvell Wynne, 89), 16-Sacha Kljestan (capt.), 5-Nathan Sturgis, 20-Eddie Gaven; 19-Chad Barrett (12-Jozy Altidore, 80), 14-Robbie Findley
Subs not used: 1-Chris Seitz, 10-Dax McCarty

notice Barrett was in the lineup, so in essence, Novak was playing with only one striker.....;)

I actually went over to Stanford last weekend hoping to see our swim teams, but was told that their sessions are closed to the public. This will be more difficult to do for a soccer practice if they're using one of the outdoor soccer fields. Hopefully someone can figure out the practice times/locations.

As someone mentioned, a scrimmage with the Earthquakes will be great for both teams. It'll definitely help new guys like Huckerby/Lima re-gain their fitness level....

Its over at the Avery Aquatic center in the 50 meter pool. You can stand outside the fence and watch. They don't want you bothering the swimmers during practice obviously but I'm sure they don't mind once the swimmers are leaving practice.

I'd like to know when/where the soccer team is practicing this weekend. One logical place is at the Maloney Field which would be open. If they use the football stadium then it would be harder to watch practice.

I wonder if these athletes are training to protect their lungs from the Beijing atmosphere.

Wouldn't they do that in L.A? Kind of like needing to get to Mexico City days before a US/Mexico match to get acclimated.

I scoured the Stanford website and couldn't find any info on this. Can we assume Maloney? If anyone knows, please post!

I made it to the practice today, which was at Maloney Field. The team walked out onto the field around 4 and practiced for about 90 minutes.

Quite a few players were missing. I didn't see any of the players from Toronto or Houston. I'm guessing they're still on their way from weekend games. Kljestan and Parkhurst sat out most of the hard workouts probably because they played in the Superliga game yesterday. Not sure why Guzan wasn't on the field though. The only player that seemed to be missing from the non-MLS contingent was Altidore.

Re: Men's Olympic Team in Palo Alto

I'm gonna try and stop by practice after work (it's just up the street) either tomorrow and/or Thursday. Must remember to bring my camera.

US Soccer has someone blogging about it here.
Apparently they were at the Giants game this past Sunday. Hopefully the suck of the 'Ants won't rub off on the boys.

I saw Nicole Barnhart! I will probably stop by again on Thursday in hopes of seeing more of the team there.

Practice was good today...The team seemed to have good camaraderie. Guzan looked good in goal, he seemed ready.. Freddy seems to be the clown on the team, always joking.. The team seemed to be in high spirits.

It's amazing how the intensity of practice increased over the past three days. The first practice lasted about 90 minutes (with a lot of fitness stuff), but it went over 2 hours today. I've been impressed with Rogers, Adu, and Bradley. Also, Feilhaber's touches looked good.

Unfortunately, I can't make it tomorrow. I hope the boys will make us proud...
