Chivas do play attractive soccer. Not so much this year. But I think that has little to do with attempts of latin infused influence by it's owner, especially considering CHIVAS USA is nothing like it's bigger brother.

Brand Chivas, in america, is about as good as Tecate. It's tough to sell over Sierra Nevada or even Budweiser. Adding even further insult to injury is their sponsor COMEX. Yep, it's all things Mexican. And here I am thinking, you know, It's a fun culture, but hey, it's like going to a bull fight in Spain. It's interesting, but at the end of the day, it just ain't you.

Too bad too. The team has the talent. And I've always wondered...how do players like Jonathon Bornstein, Sacha Klejstan, and Ante Razov feel everytime they put on that Chivas jersey, which is so unmistakeably a knock off from the real thing. So given a choice, that is, if you are a Chivas fan to begin with, will it be goat or immatation goat?

I agree. This FC thing is getting ridiculous. I hope no one calls the Sounders, "Seattle Sounders FC".

I just have two questions: What does Los Angeles have to do with the "Galaxy?" Wasn't the "earthquake" in San Francisco? Serious questions.:)

My guess would be that there are a lot of stars in Los Angeles, like there are in a galaxy.

The 1906 earthquake was centered closer to SF than San Jose, but i'm sure it ********ed up the whole area pretty well. San Jose isn't too far from SF.

Hm. I would support a rebranding for various reasons, all of which are mentioned on an almost daily basis by other people, but NOT to Los Angeles FC, also for countless fairly obvious albeit debatable reasons.

all this rebrand talk about chivas, lets talk about "REDBULL" energy drink NY and "REAL SALT LAKE" they draw worse that chivas or about the same i believe so i think we should rebrand them as well. I wonder why nobody takes REDBULLS seriously in NY. I wonder what would happen if the second franchise started there an were named the METROSTARS or COSMOS. as far as REAL FAKE SALT LAKE, they should change there name to Salt Lake CITY just because it would sound less tacky, after all this is what these posts are really about. They have nothing to do with poor attendance an your concerns for the good of the league. This is downright about MLS using stupid names to jerk off the an satisfy the big investors that come around flossing there Gold... an i agree, We need original names like the galaxy or the metrostars. hell even the FUSION sound better that "REDBULL"CHIVAS USA" AN REAL SL...

    this is my 2 cents..

i said worse or ABOUT the same an that word in itself holds water. But like i said this has nothing to do with "attendance" numbers. If ChivasUSA were selling out more that the galaxy it would still be the same ************ arguement. Redbulls? come on.. how the hell does that connect with NY? Real salt lake? the same .... This is about Stupid unoriginal names having no connection to the city ... Like i said, If ChivasUSA was selling out every game there would still be something to argue an rebrand about. Simply put, Come up with team names that connect to our beloved citys. Can u imagine, If another big company wants to come in with there branding on a franchise, Do you really wanna see the columbus crew vs the Detroit FORD, or the galaxy vs MONSTER NY? Or the Earthquakes vs AmericaUSA?
So if were talking about rebranding, Lets be fair an talk about the other team names as well

I guess Bayer Leverkusen shouldn't take to the pitch ever again as well. Arguing naming clubs after a brand is touchy because they can build history, simply renaming clubs after existing clubs just seems South American and early 20th century (Arsenal in the Argentine league anyone?).

You are right, it's about the name rather attendance figures.

Some of these "It's About Attendance" revolutionists are so delusional. They make it seem like every team in the MLS is breaking world attendance records for soccer matches. Without Beckham, this league is lucky to compete with the NHL in average attendance.

That's not a team name, that's just the name of the city. Add an FC, and maybe you've got an idea.. .

I might have got a few parts wrong but I thought it would be cool to use the historical and Spanish name for the city. Better than FC Los Angeles.

i havent read any of the other post.

i have nothing againts mexicans, a lot of my friends are mexicans from mexico, my uncle is married to a mexican from guajaca and my cousins are half mexicans half salvadoreans.

    that being said.

i think if a team in mls called aguila or fas is sounds offensive to the american soccer public i dont see how chivas usa isnt offensive?

i like the way chivas usa play, i like some of their players, prekki is a pretty cool guy but will not support chivas usa bc of the name, i've rather support chivas from guadalajara.

naming the team "chivasusa" to me only means the team is for and by all the mexican-chivas fans in the US.

chivas usa can be full of white boys or salvis but i still would not feel attracted to it bc of the name, and im sure a lot of central americans feel the same way.

just my opinion and again i truly apologize if some chicanos or pochos feel disrespected by this words... im sure america fans, cruz azul fans, pachuca fans that live in LA feel the same way.

i thought someone might mention leverkusen. and btw, bayer also owns the uerdingen team, which formerly popped up in the first bundesliga so that there have been two bayers at the same time.
another industrial name used to be in italy, where the vicenza team (they too pop up in first division now and again) used to be called 'lanerossi vicenza.' rossi was a guy in the wools ('lane') business. they used to have a stylized 'l' on their jersey. but when the team was sold the 'lanerossi' and the emblem disappeared. except that now i've heard the 'l' is back on the jersey, just for tradition's sake, since there's no tie to the wool industry.
so the thing about product names has a little (not much) tradition in europe.
the other thing is teams that don't have the name, but are clearly connected to a main sponsor. vw with wolfsburg, but also fiat and juventus.
but all these cases had/have to do with an industry that is identified with the particular city and is by far the most important piece of the local economy, which gives such arrangements their stability. we'll see what happens with rbny...
