UEFA recently announced that they are considering changing the name of the UEFA Cup to coincide with their attempt to give the tournament more prestige.

It got me to thinking about the names of certain things in MLS. The main one that comes to mind for me is the Supporters Shield. When I first heard of it, I thought it was an award for the best fans.

What do you think of the idea of changing names/logos/trophies?

I would like the two MLS regular season winners (Supporters Shield) to follow the naming convention of the A-League in calling their regular season winners the Premiers.

The MLS Cup could also be changed to actually be a cup instead of a soccer version of the NFL trophy. The MLS logo could also be changed to something more action oriented, like the Bundesliga logo.

Would you change anything? Would you keep everything the way it is?

I think we're building history, so I don't know that I'd change anything. Regardless, I despise the name Major League Soccer. I wouldn't miss it for a second if someone did change it. We're finally building a successful brand. I'd say leave things as-is. The name is lame, the logo is lame but they are at long last recognizable.

If they did change it, they'd likely change back to MLS when they realized it didn't give them any more credibility or matter.

Remember when CONCACAF changed their name to:
    The Football Confederation
    [IMG]

    And then back to CONCACAF?

If names really mattered we'd all be enthralled by games in the "Blue Square Premiership". Names do not matter, stars and level of play does.

But if we must change the name I vote for: "Major Soccer Premier League of Association Football" :D

The MLS Cup is the competition name not the trophy name.

BTW: Is the World Cup trophy a Cup?

Nothing is going to give MLS history and prestige more than time and money. That's the facts jack.

First, change Chad Barrett's name to Wayne Rooney. He looks sort of like him, and it would give him more prestige.

    But seriously...

I don't think name-changes are necessary for the most part, because just about anything that sounds odd at first, people can get used to, and it ends up seeming natural and right in the long run, only because of familiarity.

Like "Redskins" seems like an odd name, but it's been around for so long that people don't even think of its literal meaning, unless they're constantly reminded of it by people who want an issue to fight about.

Only, I'd change Chivas USA's name, not because of how it sounds, but because they're narrowing their potential fan base too much with that name.

I'd want to change the look of our trophies/cups, though. I think they look too cheap. They should get an artist to design something that looks worth winning by itself, apart from what it stands for. Like the Woodlawn Vase that they give out to the Preakness winner, now that's something to kill for, even though it's a replica.

Keep MLS. If we must adhere to some subjective standard of universal prestige, then la liga is a bad name for being too spanish, serie A for being too italian, and the bundesliga for being too German.

Seriously, your league name should set you apart from every other league, not try to steal from their reputation. The latter is for losers with no self esteem.

I think the name of the league is fine, but I think the logo is dreadful.

    American Express League?

sponsor and League all in one.

(I'm kidding, btw. The name is fine, and so is the logo. It's much better than MLB and NBA for instance.)

Id like to see American Premire league or something but i dont really care. I would like a cup though instead of that thing and put the ribbons on it like they do for other leagues and cups.

MLS always reminds me of MLB (maybe we're trying to trick baseball fans into looking into our leage ) I think a new name would be nice but at this stage in the game when momentum is building, to change the name would set us back a few years.

The logo could be changed around a bit without effecting the overall structure of things if they could still maintain the feeling of the previous one. I think the current one looks a tad childish I'd like to simplify it a bit more and add some edges.

Ive thought about American Premier League or American Premiership but a lot of England haters would bitch that we are aping the EPL if we used that. Ive thought something simple like American First Division or something could work. La Primera Liga, Ligue 1, Serie A all sort of translate to First Division. Its simple and to the point and does not sound dorky like Major League Soccer. MLS sounds like a knockoff of Major League Baseball i think

    How about something like this:

With MLS on it somewhere. It has potential I think

Wearing the lion patch works for English clubs partly because their all English. So they all have a connection with the image of the lion...however the MLS is both American AND Canadian...
Therefore, for fairness...our new logo would also need to feature a beaver or moose in addition to the eagle...:p

the name doesnt need change, the trophy(MLS Cup) lokks like a soccer Superbowl trphy doesnt need change either. but DCU needs a real nickname though.

    Um bullshit:cool:

Just because Canada cant sustain its own league and piggybacks its way into ours doesnt mean the moose makes it on to my logo

I know you weren't completely serious, but we wouldn't have to have a Moose or anything like that. Its possible for certain Welsh teams to make it to the EPL, but you won't see them adding a dragon to their logo.
