Okay, so today (Wednesday 7/9) ESPN's PTI had a preview for the LA vs Chivas derby match. One guy said "Who do you pick for the game?" The other replied "I'd rather stick needles in my eyes (than watch soccer)." What is ESPN's deal? Do they support soccer or hate it? It seems they just want the games on tv to keep people tuned in, but fail regard it as a true sport in the US.
Well if he needs help with that. I'm sure there are an army of BigSoccer dittoheads that would be more than willing to help.
Sounds like Kornheiser is back from vacation. I'll watch it tonight on ESPN.com when I get home from work. Mike Wilbon is very open to soccer. He was a guest in the booth briefly during last year's DC/Galaxy game. When the topic came up last week about the top moments in sports so far this year, Wilbon chose the Turkey-Croatia game as his #2 or 3.
I thought that douche from Miami was there all this week. I watched yesterdays, but didn't have a chance to watch today
Goddammit. I knew this thread was coming. I was flipping through the channels and saw that PTI was on and the first thing I saw was "Galaxy" as one of the wrap ups later on in the show. That exact moment I knew someone would post a thread b&m'ing about whatever they said.
Bill Shaunessey (spelling?) was the guy who said it. He looks like the little orphan annie and read everything in a monotone voice, so soccer hating or not, I don't think he'll be back for many guest spots.
Man, that Shaunessy guy makes Le Batard bearable. Not just for the MLS comment, all his opinions about everything reek of crusty ultra-traditionalist decades old sports writer (if that makes any sense). And he's the biggest Boston Red Sox fan.
It is the very last thing they talk about, but they do also talk about today being the two year anniversary of the 2006 World Cup final too (they say that soccer players don't even fight with their hands in relation to the Zidane incident ). link
That sounds like it'd be Dan Shaughnessy of the Globe. Otherwise known as the 'CHB', short for 'Curly-Haired Boyfriend'. Don't ask. He also coined the term 'Curse of the Bambino', and for that is justly reviled. i don't know that I've ever heard him say anything about soccer, but it wouldn't surprise me to find he's opposed to it. Nobody here takes him seriously.
I was about to say Dan Shaughnessy has been riding that "Curse of the Bambino" horse forever. Bill Simmons hates him and always makes fun of him in columns. When doing an EPL column and talking about how Newcastle hasn't won any trophys for a long period of time and have had tough luck, Simmons said "Somebody get Shaughnessy on the phone." Dan LeBatard is a retard too. When talking about OJ Simpson today he said something along the lines of "Dont let people forget your greatness" like OJ had parking tickets and that tarnished his legacy somehow. HE KILLED HIS WIFE! (OJ not LeBatard)
you know, I used to be the type that would start a thread like this back when I first joined (has it been 7 years? jesus christ?!) now, I'm a bit older... wiser... let me share something with you that I've learned. A lot of people that watch PTI would agree with that jackass. Eh, what are you going to do. At least now there are beginning to be people open to the idea of MLS. As long as soccer keeps pulling ratings like it did for the Euro, everything will be allllllriiiiight.....
ESPN has the worst afternoon shows. I'd rather stick a fork in my neck than watch PTI ever again, I use to watch it sometimes but it's so old and overrated now. I cringed whenever I hear they're going to "The PTI guys." I don't care if they were fill-ins or not today.
i think soccer(only) fans need to realize that they gonna get the good or bad out of everything.... its not like soccer is always bashed on espn or any other channel for that matter.
I can't blame him. There are lots of things I'd rather do than be subject to viewing the LaLaGals and the Baby Goats. Fortunately Thursday Night is Rugby Night. Practice, Pub, Setanta.
