Dude I work with Mexicans at my job and I'm friends with most of them. Some born in the USA some from Mexico and El Salvador now living in American. All of them laugh at Chivas USA and the MLS in general. The Mexican- Americans born here... their parents are Chivas Guadalajara or Club America, Cruz Azul, Monarcas, Pumas, etc. fans.

I don't know why you think I'm talkin' out the side of my ass on this matter. If my co-workers actually said to me, "yo I'm lovin' (or at least interested) this this Chivas USA squad" then I would co-sign the notion that ChivasUSA is a great name and it shouldn't be tampered with. But since I hear Chivas USA is a joke and f*ck the MLS alot, i feel they need a name change so they appear seperate and have their own identity. I'm not hear to rip your team, I want the MLS and all it's teams to succeed point blank. Hell I imo the NY Red Bulls might be the worst name in all of sports period.

    Those crazy Salvadorean-born Mexicans....

The fact that your Salvadorean-Mexican (Mexican-Salvadorean?) coworkers say ******** the MLS a lot is exactly why a name change won't make much difference to that type of fan. They don't care about the MLS. They think the MLS is trash. Naming a team something else isn't taking Chivas out of the MLS. Tell me, do these Salvadorean-Mexican's respect the Galaxy? My guess is that they say Beckham is gay, LD is a bitch, and the Galaxy is crap.

I hear you but at the same time at least get the younger Mexican- Americans who claim LA. To me your team should be one of the biggest teams in Southern Cali in all sports. If named and marketed right your potential is unlimited. By naming you team Chivas you basically eliminated damn near half of the Mexicans in Southern Cali because they are Club America affiliated from FMF ... and no way will they pull for anything named Chivas in red stripes period. Then on the other hand Chivas fans of the FMF team think CDUSA is the 'triple A' for Guadalajara. You guys are losing twice in the fan department.

Then your owner said(in so many words) that his team was for Mexicans and would beat the gringos in their own country. Now the white people aren't interested. You're losing 3 times:(!!

Chivas de Los Angeles: I like it.

Chivas LA (CLA) sounds better than Chivas USA - for one, the main market is Hispanics in LA, and it "localizes" the team. That plus it'll be quicker (like Spanish announcers need to talk any faster :D) for people to say during matches.

I say keep the "Chivas", drop the USA.

Why would a Salvadoran make fun of MLS. Like their soccer league is any better. I mean how many of their countrymen can even hack it in MLS.

As for the Mexicans, on a talent level their league is better but hey have some silly things as well in their league. Four Divisions and two seasons that end in a playoff. If you're going to have a season ending playoff at least have it once a year. Hell their regular season is just as messed up as ours.

Regardless, I can't blame them for laughing as Chivas USA. I know many South Americans who laugh at that team name as well.

They can laugh at the MLS all day long, but how many times has Mexico beat the US in the last 10 years at soccer? Also, MLS teams are pretty even when playing teams from Mexico. The level of play is getting more even between the leagues.

Completely agree! It would be perfect with keeping the heritage still alive while bringing the past back to the forefront.

I can see why Chivas was created and the purpose it serves but it has failed to bring in enough new fans to really make it legit. I think a complete rebranding especially in the face of the anti-Galaxy feeling going around the league would be perfect. I'd also like to see the branding favor the "little man" i.e. those with less income to combat Galaxy's "Hollywood" status i.e. those with higher incomes. I personally think the league is missing out by trying to market the sport and league instead of concentrating on marketing the individual teams and what they represent to the community- the rest will follow. I'd love to have a sit down with their marketing team and chat about what I think they're doing wrong :D

Any way on the note, might as well get Galaxy to take over FC Hollywood and rename themselves...

I'd like to see a team with attitude go for SC instead of FC for soccer club or ST for soccer team as the teams we have aren't clubs in the European sense so no use in calling them that (albeit I do any way!).

Agreed. People will talk bad about MLS, and then turn around and support leagues/teams that arent even as good.

Here is someone who believes that the "Chivas brand extension into the USA" experiment is going "very well:"

I think they should be Club America America.... They want to head to Miami from what I've seen of the story but I'd rather see Beckham owning a team there with his connections in the industry as I think the potential is pretty big in the area. Plus as the MLS is maturing, we shouldn't "rely" on other teams from other countries to suppliment our league.

Wonder why they want Miami since there are not many Mexican-Americans there who would be fans of Club America. I think it is where Univision is headquartered so maybe that has something to do with it. San Antonio would be a good choice.

The UNION ULTRAS have members that follow many different FMF teams as well as members that don't even follow Chivas GDL or FMF. The main thing is that they could not identify with the Galaxy, but love soccer and want the MLS to grow. They gave it a chance and they love it. So although some people you know that are Club America fans will never pull for anything named Chivas in red stripes, there are some that love the sport and will!:D

You go back to 2005 when Vergara talked his shit. He made a big mistake. He has a big mouth. Have you heardhim the last two years regarding CHivas USA? I don't think so because he is an owner, yet does not directly oversee this Club. You need to live in the present and not the past.:)

For comparisons sake, and its only speculation on my part, but had TFC been names say Toronto Arsenal and afilliated with them, you would not have seen the result at BMO that you have today. As a lifelong fan of Liverpool I could never support that team. amost all other soccer loving fans with European origins would have a hard time supporting the team, and that's without another legit neutral team in the local market. Its hard enough for fans of sioccer to adopt a new team as it is.

Chivas USA was really a huge gamble and doubt it has reaped any of teh huge potential it may have had.

What would happen if NYRB was renamed to Man U New York?

It is silly. The NCAA won't let any teams wear any names on their jersey that are a reference to Native Americans during NCAA Tournaments. That is why the FSU baseball team can no longer wear the baseball jersey's that say "Seminoles" on them. Those looked pretty cool too. There are movements in our country by some tribes to get rid of all sport team references to Native Americans no matter what they are.

    1) I have often thought about that too, but not naming them after a team would be a good step in the right direction. If I didn't chat on big soccer I would have never known who owned that team as long as they didn't copy another teams name.

    2) I agree!

    3) I'm sick of the FC fad too. Calling every team FC doesn't make out teams as good as the ones in England. It just make our teams look like they are pretending to be something they aren't.

    4) RSL is just a bad name. This was yet another crappy attempt at trying to get fans interested just because one of the top teams in Europe has that name.

    5) I like the Rapids too and am glad they stuck with a name that has a connection to the state. I think it is cool how all of their pro teams in Denver are named after things that are a part of Colorado's environment and the Rapids kept that tradition alive. I also agree that the old colors were better.

i love fc, i hate these non soccer names. i like the old fashion city name with optional fc, or named after the first owner like some greek teams. on the chivas matter, i think that we're in america now and we should stop marketing to ethnic groups all together. FCLA and LA City. I like that. That would make for a great derby, no? and i hated metrostars, rbny is so much better

Please tell me this joker is kidding. Sure Metrostars wasan't the best team name, but it was better than to have your team named after an Austrian energy drink. If Red Bull wants to sponsor the jersey, fine, but just don't take the team name.

On to the second thing that's bugging me about this post. I hate when teams copy the English or Euro's just because it's precedent. I admit, FC Dallas is better than Dallas Burn, but still, that doesn't mean that it always will be better. This is America, we do things differently here. I want traditional American team names, as long as it has something to do with the area. Seattle Sounders, San Jose Earthquakes, LA Galaxy, New England Revolution, etc. All those names have something to do with the area they represent, and the newer teams should be like that.
