Andy Gray is decent. Sometimes I feel like he speaks as if he is all-knowing though. But I do like him...Julie Foudy on the other hand is garbage. I hate how Gray jumped onto the "Ronaldo is unquestionably the best player in the world" blahblahblah suck CR nuts more during every portgual game bandwagon. Other than that hes great.
andy makes the coverage legit.. pure and simple... ESPN/ABC are finally starting to get it... helps when the boss likes footie
I don't understand why in the Euro they used the really nice small score box w/ time. But during MLS, they take up the far side of the pitch with the beastly score thing, its ridiculous.
Andy Gray has raised the bar for all current and future English speaking futbol commentators in this country. This will be his long term contribution to the game in this country and I thank ESPN for having the cajones to hire him.
For FIFA and UEFA matches, ESPN tries to match the graphics package for the world feed -- blue background, italicized country names, fonts, etc.
Chris Zelkovich of the Toronto Star is not a fan: I switched back and forth between the two, but had John Helm on for most of the time. I didn't have a problem with Gray's accent and thought he had a lot of insight. Gray is a better studio analyst than a commentator, though.
Andy Gray was absolutely excellent! I think his pro-Spain bias is quite funny, esp. in the Italy match. "I fear for Spain, I really do." (At the end of extra-time, when everyone with a decent mind would bet on Italy winning the PK.) "Good luck, son." (to Santi Cazorla about to take a PK). "Good luck." (to Senna taking PK). "Good luck, Cesc." (Fabregas taking PK.) His love for Torres shows quite clearly, and his tendency to call Iniesta and Xavi "little" adds humor to his commentation. I certainly hope Andy comes back for 2010.
Or the "I'm nae gonna say it" when Andy is going to mention someone's perfect PK record, then the guy misses it.
commentators in english, be them english or from any other english speaking country are usually boring ! Palbo Ramirez on the other hand is simply sensational ! the guy has a voice made to comentate football matches ! I dont want a comentator that will talk about crappy usless statistics, a guy like Palbo Ramirez on Univision, he is a comentator that will make you really enjoy a football match ! I am not of any Spanish decent and I dont understand spanish that well, but enough to listen to football matches ! Even those who dont understand spanish at all, should watch the next world cup on Univision ! I dont need Andy Gray to tell me any news about football, especially since he doesnt understand crap about the game !
I do pretty well understanding Spanish, have very different opinion. "Palbo" is one of the weakest ever. For me Jorge Ramos is #1 in the US. If you happen to be in an area with "ESPN Deportes Radio" you may have heard him, he was on Telemundo for years, and was the voice of "Radio Unica" during it's run..."El Relator de las Americas" Andres Cantor is the well know star, now on Telemundo he too is far better than "Palbo". The second tier guy over at Univision/Telefutura who's name escapes me at the moment is better. "Palbo"=goofy poser. "golazo haso haso haso haso hasoooo"
I completely disagree!!! I heard both of them, Jorge Ramos does matches on Fox Espanol for Coppa Libertadores (the mexican teams) and Andres Cantor, has moved to Telemundo, he comentates crappy matches for them. The voice the Palbo has is incredible ! His voice is deep and strong , he talks really fast and yells really loud ! I am not talkinf about their knowledge of football, I am talking about their actuall comentating ! I have listened to a lot of radios from South America, there are some really good ones in Peru and in Brazil, but I still think that Pablo Ramirez is the best!
I thought that while he was very critical of the ref's decisions, he wasn't critical of the ref; kind of a "good ref having a bad day" position. I also thought that when the officials got it right, he would comment on that too. Contrast that with Eric Whynealda's personal attacks and gutless comments like "players win games, coaches lose games, and refs ruin games". Gray did not try to make himself look good by making others look bad, he just commented on what was going on.
The man was incredibly biased against Italy. Still, though, he was pretty entertaining. Also, to the guy who thinks the spanish announcers in the US are better, give us a break. They chat about ridiculous things all game long, laugh about stupid things, and then yell "gooooool" like robots. They are just amateurs compaired to announcers from England.
I think u are saying that cause u are English, even if not.., thats what I like. I was born and raised watching football all my life, I dont need to learn things about the game or news while watching the game. These guys make it definetly more exciting and fun ! Plus I dont think these guys "know nothing" like u make it seem, I think football is played in other countries besides "America".., they know a thing or two. Anyhow, I definetly dont want to listen to Andy Gray since I always disagree with his or any English commentator's opinion ! I am a Milan fan !!!! Andy Gray used to have square feet and has a square head !
Sorry but there's clearly a bias there, plus you've got it wrong. And have fun in the Uefa cup milan fan
We will ! Dont forget, your 2 pathetic teams have been in the CL final the same number of times Milan reached it in the past 5 years ! I am Albanian, no biast with either Andy Gray or any of the Spanish speaking commentators ! If I had a biast would be with the Europeans !
I had to look up what a "Dutch oven" is and can I just say "Eeeww!" I would be pretty surprised if that was what he was getting at, but I did notice the French toast comment when he made it.
