I would like to get some opinion from many of you of which players you believe should, or could be a very important part of the Canadian Team for qualifiers, and if Canada does in fact make it to SA 2010 WC. Also some youngters to watch out for. Also formation that could best suit Canada.

So no one has an opinion on whom they think will be part of the 2010 WC Canadian if Canada does in fact make it.

    Fine I'll bite.

I think Julian De Guzman, Dwayne de Rosario, and to a lesser extent Rob Friend, are irreplacable and essential for our qualification hopes.

For youngsters watch out for Andre Hainault, David Edgar, Will Johnson and possibly David Houliett. If you ask the our coach, he'd say watch out for Jamie Peters, but I remain unconvinced.

Almost forgot the formation. We seem to be quite comfortable in a 4-4-2/4-5-1/4-4-1-1, and I'm happy with it

    South Africa 2010 Roster

    GK's:
Lars Hirschfeld (CFR Cluj - Romania)
Greg Sutton (Toronto FC - MLS)
    Asmir Begovic (Portsmouth - EPL)

    DEF:
    Paul Stalteri (Tottenham - EPL)
    Kevin McKenna (Koln - Bund1.)
    David Edgar (Newcastle - EPL)
Mike Klukowski (Club Brugges - Belgium)
Andre Hainault (FK Most - Czech Rep.)
Marcel de Jong (Roda JC - NED)
    DEF # 7
    DEF #8

    MID:
Julian De Guzman (Deportivo La Coruna - ESP)
Dwayne De Rosario (Houston - MLS)
Atiba Hutchinson (FC Copenhagen - DEN)
Tam Nsaliwa (AEK Athens - GRE)
    Daniel Imhof (Bochum - Bund1.)
Issey Nakajima-Farran (FC Nordsjaellan - DEN)
Tomasz Radzinksi (Skoda Xanthi - GRE)
Josh Simpson (FC Kaiserslautern - Bund2.)
    MID #9

    FOR:
Rob Friend (Borussia Moenchengladbach - Bund1.)
Olivier Occean (Lillestrom SK - NOR)
    FOR #3/MID #10

Most of these players are the core of the team at the moment.

I have excluded Onstad because he'll be 42 by then, so i have included Asmir Begovic who is currently 21 and is our best up and coming goalie. I've left a few spots blank because they're likely to cause a lot of debate, and people on BigSoccer LOVE to jump all over peoples posts.

For the defenders it comes down to who's playing well 2 years from now. Is Nik Ledgerwood (1860 Munich) on the radar? Are Ante Jazic (LA) and Jim Brennan (TFC) still capable? Who's the 4th CB - Serioux (Dallas), Hastings (Inverness), someone young?

The last midfield spot could be anyone, and there's no guarantee some of the old guard like Imhof or Radz will be still figuring in. They could be superceded by the likes of Will Johnson (Heerenveen) or some youngster from the new U20's (Saiko?). And the last mid/forward might be Iain Hume (Leicester) or Ali Gerba (FC Ingolstadt), but i'd like to see what teenagers David Hoillet (Blackburn) and Randy Edwini-Bonsu (Vancouver) do in the next 2 years.

If Serioux can play like he did against Brazil with any sort of consistency he is our number 1 CB. I have never seen McKenna, Hainault or Hastings play a game for Canada that was equal to how Serioux played against Brazil. Of course Edgar and Hainault are both young and could improve a lot over the next couple of years.

Serioux certainly played with a swagger against Brazil didn't he? I thought maybe too much so for a central defender. We may have paid the price for his decisions if Brazil's attack was led by R'dinho and Kaka.

I think Edgar will be a force a couple of years from now. Mckenna will be getting on in years then. With Kluklowski playing the way he is, I don't see Jimmy Brennan playing a role in 2010 at all. I have my biases but I hope Ledgerwood get some playing time at LB.

Don't you mean RB? Klukowski at LB was almost perfect against Brazil. Nik is very versatile and can play either side (as he has done for Canada at the U20 and U23 level).

I know the U.S. does 23 tickets . . . but is the idea to really try to project or to have it reflect where people stand now with an obvious eye to the fact that Radzinski and Onstad will both be really old by 2010?

Anyway here’s an attempt at a 23 knowing that someone will invariably come out of nowhere and some of the youngsters will rise faster than others.

    GK's:
    Lars Hirschfeld
    Greg Sutton
    Asmir Begovic

    DEF:
    Paul Stalteri
    Kevin McKenna
    David Edgar
    Mike Klukowski
    Andre Hainault
    Jim Brennan
    Nik Ledgerwood
    Adrian Serioux

    MID:
    Julian De Guzman
    Atiba Hutchinson
    Tam Nsaliwa
    Patrice Bernier
    Issey Nakajima-Farran
    Josh Simpson
    Iain Hume
    Marcel de Jong
    Dwayne De Rosario
    Will Johnson

    FOR:
    Rob Friend
    Ali Gerba

I see well I believe Canada can do it and everyone else shoud too.
Does anyone have more information on David Hoillet (Blackburn) and Randy Edwini-Bonsu (Vancouver)?

The thing with Serioux though is consistency. I recall that his debut with Millwall had everyone raving about how it the best debut in Millwall history and that he was a Premiership quality player. But with time that opinion changed considerably. He was very good against against Brazil, no doubt, and I have heard good things about his play this year with Dallas (Beckham tackle notwithstanding). I'd also agree he is a sure starter if he can hit that level of play consistently and could be the solution to one of our biggest problem areas.

I thought Serioux was brilliant in the midfield against Spain a few years ago too. He can play at that level. As long as he stays on his feet and plays within himself (ie limits his tendency to try to beat three guys on the dribble when he's the last man back) I think he can fill the role.

I wish we had time to see Klukowski in the middle (which would get Brennan on the field) or even Nsaliwa, but we don't. I think we have to go on form and right now Serioux is playing well. If he sucks against Panama then maybe we re-evaluate, but I'm hoping he can at least get us to the next phase of qualifying and then we see where that leaves us.

I don't think saw anyone mention this but I was really surprised we didn't use his long throw against Brazil. Twice in injury time there were throw-ins just on their side of half that seem taylor made for a Serioux bomb. Has he stopped doing that? Has he lost the ability to? Is Mitchell against it? Or are they not showing their hand in games that don't matter?

    cheers,

I don't think Hoillet is a legitimate option for 2010. I think he scored once this season in the German 2nd Division. I don't see him getting many opportunities with Blackburn this upcoming season, but perhaps they'll loan him out. I'd like to see him take a shot at playing in the Championship, League One or a non-Old Firm SPL team.

Wikipedia says one goal in 12 games.
Considering he was loaned to SC Paderborn this past season, it's always possible he will continue to be loaned to them by Blackburn. They were, however, relegated to the 3rd league.

Regarding Serioux being possibly punished by Ronaldinho and Kaka, on this year's form I think Fabiano and Robinho are a better stiking pair. Ronaldhino had a very poor year this year and while Kaka and Robinho were both good the strongest season of the four was had by Fabiano who scored 24 goals in 30 league games for Sevilla. I also don't think any of the teams we will be playing against will have anyone at or even near the level of those four strikers. As long as he is consistent, if he can outdribble Fabiano and Robinho then I am not too worried about his abilities against CONCACAF strikers.

Ledgerwood just needs to stop getting injured. His career always seems to be on the upswing and then he gets injured for half a year. Simpson is pretty worrying in this regard too. Since Simpson has been playing striker for Kaiserslautern I think when he is back from injury he might be an upgrade on Hume as a striker to bring in late when we need a goal. Hume has been less than impressive with the national team for quite some time.

Both players are forwards, and both were born in 1990. Hoillet was deemed ready to move on from the U18's at Blakcburn this season and was getting regular PT for Paderborn - a Bund2. club. Since Paderborn have been relegated, there have already been bids made by other Bund2. clubs to have him loaned out for next season. He has 2 years (at which point he'll be turning 20) to show he has what it takes for the big stage.

Edwini-Bonsu plays for the Vancouver U18 team and has made some friendly appearances for Vancouvers' senior team, most recently against LA Galaxy last month. He will be playing U19 for a German side next season as part of his residency agreement with Vancouver. Considering he scored against some respectable German U19 sides this season, he will likely join a Bund1. club.

He started consistently towards the end of the season with a team facing relegation. He is ONLY 17 yrs old. I hope if they do loan him out, that is to another German club. The Paderborn site said that Blackburn would be looking for another B2 club to loan him out to, which is much preferable to your options.

They moved him back to a winger. It was a temporary move since the regulars were not producing and he was. With Simpson in that role it was more of a 4-4-1-1.
