I haven't seen a thread dedicated to it, but is Guevara going to get a suspension for the blatant punch he threw at Devon McTavish? I can't stand that guy and that was an enormously cheap shot. I hope he has to sit at least one game for that.
He should. On a side note he's from my native country and if there is one thing i've always hated about him and what keeps me from rooting for him, thats his lack of discipline. I can't stand that.
It wasn't exactly a punch. It was like a slow-mo punch. Honestly, as much as I dislike the guy, a yellow card was probably punishment enough.
The punch occurred before Robert's sending off iirc. Devon is on the ground, getting up - and clear as day Guevara punches/smacks/whatevers Devon in the head. I expect nothing less from Guevara.
In addition to Guevara getting away with this, did anyone notice the Roberts elbow thrown at Namoff (I think). They both went down in a heap with Roberts on top and it looks like he drops his elbow down at Bryan. Didn't look like he connected but it seems the intent was there. I think it was around the 63 minute mark but after enjoying a long weekend (thanks DCU) I can't be sure.
There was more to it than the slap that got Drogba red-carded out of the Champions League final. That said, I'm fine with it being simply a yellow.
I'm actually kind of curious about Guevara's other punch, when he couldn't outjump Fred(?) and punched the ball with his hand instead and MAYBE broke up a quick DC counter attack going the other way. Isn't that supposed to be an automatic yellow? I seem to recall Eski picking up that yellow several years ago in a playoff game...
I doubt he'll get anything else. Devon's dad said it was kind of slap/punch type of thing. It kind of looked like as Guevarra was flailing around on the ground his hand hit Devon. Not sure how much intent there was but with Guevarra you never know.
I don't know how MLS handles after-the-fact discipline from video evidence, but my understanding is that, had this occured in the EPL, the league could not increase if it was something that the ref saw and judged on the field (which is what I think happened here w/ the yellow card to Guevara). In other words, he probably gets away with a cheap shot. I'd imagine McTavish may remember this for the next time the two side meet. Aside from that, I thought the referee had an excellent match (although Laurent Robert might not agree
Robert card? What was that red card for? I've not been able to track it down in match reports, and I don't have the game on DVR. Certainly whatever the AR saw, it just took a word from him and the center was ready to eject the onetime Magpie...
Re: Robert card? Are you sure about that? It's listed in the box score as a straight red for abusive language (which, by the Laws of the Game, is a straight red offense different from dissent).
Re: Robert card? I hadn't checked out the box score, I just assumed since he was already carrying a yellow he had picked up another one for his unpleasantnesses with the Loud Side AR. You must have it right then.
It looked like a clear (and deliberate) strike to the face to me. Should have been a red card. I'm sure nothing more will come of it though.
It looked intentional to me but I am kind of bias, so I can't really say much. I haven't liked that guy ever. He is another one of those guys that gets too much credit for not nearly enough output.
Re: Robert card? I think Bootsy's right: Robert saw a straight red. Apparently he said some very nasty things to the referee because he believed a DC United player had deliberately handled the ball in the box. This usually goes beyond, "You suck, ref," and traverses into questioning what animal(s) his mom mated with in order to produce him and possibly who supplied his pay envelope before the match. At that point, it's more personal than dissent. The ref stopped play for the offside, and showed Robert some shiny red vinyl. Either way, he's gone, so he not only misses TFC's next MLS match, but because of the red he's that much closer to a suspension for accumulated discipline points. Like I said, I thought he did a good job overall.
