Michael Laudrup - to coach Benfica? http://www.goal.com/en-us/Articolo.aspx?ContenutoId=701307 That could bode well for Freddy Adu.
That would suck. Sven seems like a nice guy...I'd hate to be in the situation of having to despise him.
Benfica is also interested in French midfielder Hassan Yebda, currently with Le Mans. And negotiations with Michael Laudrup are "progressing".
Adu got a new coach. http://www.planetbenfica.co.uk/news.php Looks like a quality guy. Previously manages Getafe and Valencia of La Liga.
From the article: That's promising. Young, ambitious, successful. Anyone know about his tactical or training philosophy?
Flores is a very good manager, who got screwed by Valencia... this is a good move for Benfica, altho I dont thnik they will keep him long
Agreed, I can see him at Benfica for maybe 2-3 years then probably head back to La Liga. If Adu impresses, maybe can bring him back to Spain.

Ugh. Adu is too good for Nacional. This would be a giant step back for him and he needs to veto it. I sincerely hope that Adu doesn't make backward steps on the club level in order to please Bob Bradley. I can imagine Bob saying to Adu, "You need to play more." Adu responds, "I'm young and at a big club." Bobs say, "Then go to a smaller club and/or call me when you're older."
Adu doesn't need to please Bradley. If the US continues to call up players like EJ, Feilhaber (completely out of form) while omitting Adu as he progresses with Benfica, then the US Nat team needs a new coach. I think if Adu eventually went out on loan, then that's probably solely the decision by Benfica managment as they see Adu not ready to start for the club and need minutes elsewhere. Adu won't have much choices here. He either stay at Benfica and see 10-15min each game (or less), or went to a smaller club and perhaps start.
I would rather him stay at Benfica and get 10-15 games than go to Nacional. There are better clubs out there than Nacional for Adu. Hell, according to most observers, Adu is already good enough for Benfica. If Benfica don't have room for him then he should go somewhere of near equal quality that does. There is absolutely no need to play somewhere in front of 1,000 fans in the hope of getting to one day play for Benfica. That would be a giant step backward for a player that has made giant steps forward in ability.
I understand your argument, however I have a different point of view. If Adu truly believes he's capable of starting for Benfica, or a top team in Portugal, he needs to go out and proved it, because as it stands now Benfica just don't seems to think he's a starter. If he lights things up at Nacional, lots of club will be calling for him, either within Portugal or elsewhere in Europe. I don't think one can garnered many interests by seating on the bench or getting 10-15 min per game (even at a top club). If I was Adu, I would go to Nacional immediately if the offer is on the table. You got to start small somewhere, there's no shame in that. Rui was a Benfica man himself who went out on loan to a 2nd division team, before he became a legend.
As a Benfica fan, your natural preference is for things to happen that benefit the club. In this case, you wnt Adu to go on loan so that he caan come back to Benfica a better player. As an Adu fan, I could care less about Benfica. I want to see Adu play at his level, which is certainly not at a club that gets less attendance than some MISL teams.
Flores just arrived and he is said to like fast wingers so this may be good for Adu. Hopefuly he will help define Adu's future at Benfica as I don't think Adu will be loaned without him allowing, so either he let's Adu go and in this case he should do so (it's better than staying on the bench or not even making the squad) or he says he counts with Adu and won't allow the loan deal to go through.
I can understand your argument, but I whole-heartedly disagree that clubs will be calling for him if he lights it up at Nacional. If he goes to Nacional and scores some goals, why would anyone think he has progressed to the point that he suddenly deserves a place in the starting XI? Adu has to earn his playing time based on his work ethic and performance, which most sources report as being high-quality. So, if he has been proving himself all year long in practice and in his limited playing time, why should Adu accept the demotion? If he is no longer in Benfica's plans, he should demand a transfer to a different club. The kid has got skills, and there would definitely be teams that would be willing to buy him AND play him. There is no reason Freddy Adu should even remotely consider going to Nacional - if he wanted to play football at that level he could have gone to college.
I hope that I am not missing something important here. Nacional played in La Liga right? Which mean they will go up against Sporting, Porto, Benfica, etc. twice a year correct? So, is it better to sit on the bench at Benfica or start for another club in the same leauge? Yeah, the squad might be weaker (alot), but the competition is still the same ain't it (with the exception of EUFA competition)? I am an ADU fan first, and the US Nat team's interests takes precedent over Benfica's.
Haha yeah you're right. I guess that's what I get for being melodramatic... ...but I really do believe that going to a club as small as Nacional will hamper his development as a player. I just can't imagine that the facilities and coaching/medical staffs are of the same quality, and I know that he won't face the same quality in practice or receive the same fan support. And I know for a fact that he won't like living there as much as he likes living in Lisbon. Anyways, the playing time would definitely be good for him, but at what expense?
Why stay if they don't play you? Better off going out on loan and hoping a real club with vision comes in for you. Do you know anything about Nacional? Plus I wouldn't mind Freddy getting out of Lisbon for a while and focusing on football. Bnefica have loaned a few players to Nacional so it can't be that bad.
Nacional is not that bad. They were in the uefa cup in 06-07. They are a fun team to watch. They beat Porto 3-0 just a few weeks ago. I wouldnt mind it if he gets to play. Then he can go back to Benfica after the season and tear it up there.
