Well, since publicity is 1 of my favorite topics with soccer, I'll bring it up again. You may not (like me) want to believe it but the American Football League is about to start again. NOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!! Pre-season can't last forever, ya know. What a shame. And MLB (maybe this is a rumor, don't sue me) "apparantly" is set for a strike on Aug. 30. YEAHHHHHHH!!!! I just love the thought of it! So I was a-thinkin' if this would be the perfect (or last chance) for MLS to make a major impact (with advertising that is.) And I love Landon but how 'bout some other folks. That might help. Any others guys?
The AFL??? The league that folded in the 60s?? Wha strike in NFL? What do you mean preseason??? But to answer your question about the face of MLS... Donova, Quaranta, Twellman, Convey, all the youngins who younger generations can relate to
Im interested to see how or if sportscenter will cover MLS games... whether they will show any highlights or whether they will show the coverage and go to in depth stories about how the MLB strike is affecting fans owners players and the like. This may also mean that there will be a bigger chunk of golf and NFL highlights. If MLB strikes I hope that some more coverage will begiven but I wouldnt count on it.
Knowing SportsCenter, the key word here is 'if'. And by 'if,' of course, I mean 'won't.' Jerks. Now they'll spend even more 'sports' coverage time talking about off-field stuff, money, etc. As if they don't do that enough.
The MLB player's union is shrewd, I tell ya! They knew they were going to strike, but they decided to hold off until football season began, so that Sportscenter would show football highlights instead of soccer highlights! - Paul
Does anyone actually believe that the MLB Players will go on strike? And that everyone(espn, baseball fans, media) will actually pay more attention to MLS? NO way! I really doubt that they'll go on strike. Remember this is MLS.......we never catch a break
If there's a strike, it'll probably be short. The owners would end up screwing themselves if they lost the pennant race/playoffs/World Series, as many of them are in financial trouble. It is hard to forsee how they're going to resolve the revenue sharing and luxury tax issues. A lot of people seem to think that baseball's going to eventually need a salary cap, but my knowledge of economics isn't enough to know whether that's true. All I know is that is that the NFL/NBA seem to be doing alright with one. Huey
It's true. I follow baseball and they very definatly need a salary cap. The difference between certain small market teams and large market teams is massive. They Yankees are gonna end up paying aprrox 130 mil for this seasons team. The twins pay arouns 25 I think. Yes the Twins are doing very well but thats because all their players are mostly young home grown players, and they will implode after this season after other Big market teams buy them. Thats one thing. Another thing, A-Rod. With a salary cap in place (my guess it would be around 65 mill), no one is going to give him 25 million a year. Impossible. No random middle releif pitcher is going to get 10 mil for 3 years. If you follow football thats how much Kevin Johnson, one of the better recievers in the NFL just got. What salary keep means is that the big market teams will no longer dominate baseball, and players won't be making astronomical amounts of money. And owners have already stated that If players go on strike that they will push hard for a salary cap.
The average MLB player's salary is $2 mil a year. Thats disgusting. Most people now agree...if there is a strike (especially over sept 11....the fans wont come back. It took loads of brand new balparks for a bunch to come back..and the strike was 9 years ago! Will SportsCenter devote more time to soccer? No telling...because we've gotten so much more respect in the past 6 months, its a good possibility. Will we get more games shwown on TV? Dont know that either. I could imagine MAYBE if we fenageled the schedule around for a few weeknight games (ESPN has NFL sun nites, and College on thurs nites). Even if they cover the strike....a 3½ hours baseball game = 1½ hours of strike coverage and a 2 hour soccer match. Perfect youd think......but maybe not to ESPN. Do you think if we held games on the night of Sept 11 in NYC or anywhere else...we'd get it on TV and let it be a benefit match. Im sure we could work somehtinig else. How nice would it be to see Soccer showcasing a memorial for 9/11 when america's pasttime (baseball) cant even play a game. Do you think that would do in baseball and rise soccer? Consider that soccer is still a laugher for many writers and fans of other sports. I think seeing soccer there (maybe Im making this out for more then it is....) on that day will lift a few peoples hearts. I have ideas bout how we could do this....but Ill start a thread.
Couldn't have said it better myself lad! And 2 mil a year for the average MLB player is not only disgusting but just plain unessary. I mean, I just can't put into words how much I hate that. AHHH, it just makes my blood boil! If soccer (MLS) did do a memorial for 9/11 while baseball is still screwing themselves, that would be the greatest thing for us EVER!! No doubt. And it would definitely raise awareness and/or curiosity about our league. How I would love to go back to school and not hear my classmates say that MLS is a "joke" and that baseball is the better and more loved sport. I wouldn't even have to say anything to them because something like this would do ALL the talking. That, my friends, is my only true birthday wish. And if it came true, I would not be able to explain nor compare my happiness to anything or anyone I've ever known. - Akele
