LA Times article http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-spw-farmer17apr17,0,800212.story Pictures http://losangelesfootballstadium.com/ Nice stadium, says it wont use tax dollars. I selfishly hope it wont get built so that it doesn't compete with MLS teams in LA, but I think their fan bases are different enough that the impact on the Galaxy and Chivas won't be too big.
I hope that it does get built, and without tax dollars, so that pro sports owners around the country have to put up or shut up when it comes to their stadiums instead of extorting taxpayers. It's a good example, to be frank.
Before reading the article the only possible MLS connection I could think of was the long-shot possibility that AEG could conceivably be involved. LA is their home base and stadium building and operation is part of their core business. Then the article pointed out that the mover here, Roski, was/is involved with AEG and Anschutz on the Staples Center project...hmm
I'm trying to figure out in which universe that makes any sort of sense, because it doesn't make any sense in this one.
Chivas want a home of their own. Galaxy want bigger everything. AEG might be linked to the new stadium. And their footprint does seem to be getting larger it seems. I don't think it should be that hard to see a universe. With all the alternates and all. If I wanted to be ludacris I could have said Becks was to be the kicker and punter. Now THAT is MLS implications at its finest.
I just hope Lalas is pulling the strings on this too. I'd like to see one small corner of the stadium with all the bathrooms, concession stands, general amneties, and salary, while the other 9/10 of the stadium has seats not fit for USL... I mean... AFL teams.
I still can't tell if you're serious. The Galaxy can't consistently sell-out their 27,000 seat stadium, so why would they move to a 70,000 seat stadium in a worse location (further from LA city limits). AEG is not involved in this stadium deal. The guy proposing it worked with AEG to build the Staples Center, but he's going it alone on this one.
Sorry, but where exactly is that stadium? Los Angeles? It's in ********ing CHINO??? That's not LA. That's everything that's wrong with SoCal development. sigh. There are no MLS implications.
Since Jorge was the only one with balls enough to invest in MLS at the time, when people thought the league was done after contraction and losing tens of millions, he will get some leeway form MLS. If the situation hasn't improved there after MLS goes to 18 teams, and gets a few more stadiums approved, then Garber may start "suggesting" it to him. Fact is, he has earned the right to give it a shot for a while. Most toss the word "deserves" around on these forums with little to no merit or logic. He "deserves" his shot for what he did for the league. It was big at the time. Very big. They also seem to run their organiztion fairly well compared to most MLS teams. Still get tons of sponsers, youth programs, etc. If he wants to give it a decade and spend his cash then good for him. He has "earned it".....for now.
The MLS implication is that if the stadium is built to host soccer (and I'm guessing that's a near-certainty), there might be some USMNT matches played there. And possibly, within the lifespan of the HDC, MLS Cup could be held there. IOW, it might be taking some money out of the HDC.
I do admire the man very much. It takes a lot to spend your own hard cash for a soccer team that on avg gets 10k, but they make money off their sponsors and the other programs that Chivas is involved in.
From what I understand as well CUSA is very well run, IMo all that franchise really needs is a rebranding to a totally neutral, totally new side not connected to a Mexican club at least outwardly. Market to latinos still (I mean you have to, you're in LA), but have it be it's own club and I think interest will start growing instead of shrinking as it seems to have done with Chivas USA to an extent. UIn the end, calling the club Chivas USA and giving it that kit is a gimmick and people dont like being pandered to. Same with RSL frankly. but MLS isnt afraid of change though, BurnClashFusionMutinyMetrostars etc etc etc so if its decided its the best thing then it will happen.
Yeah let's not get carried away. This is about the 5th plan to bring the NFL back to LA in the last 7-8 years. They all got this far. It'll be interesting to see if they can make progress. Off the top of my head: NFL to Hollywood park NFL to retrofitted coliseum NFL to downtown stadium NFL to rosebowl Actually a few more NFL to Carson (forget the details here) NFL to stadium in dodger stadium parking lot. etc. etc. They all had nice models of their stadiums and pitches to the NFL but none got much further then that.
Hey,RSL avg 18k per game. A change of name might do the trick though ,but we have to wait and see what the new guy in charge of Chivas USA will do.
Without getting to far off topic one thing I alway thought would work is if the marketed themselves as the "peoples team". Considering their ticket prices are considerably cheaper compared to the Galaxy.
2009?!?!?! I'd be shocked if the NFL was in LA in 2012... there have been a dizzying array of proposals to build a stadium in the LA metro area... maybe this one will succeed, but the guy needs a team first... which means: -He has to buy/find owners willing to move (that alone could take a couple yearS) OR -He has to get a franchise (the NFL isn't gonna expand anytime soon) this has little/nothing to do with us.
