At the end of the night, I realized that for the first time ever, I think, never once did I get mad and yell at the announcers. (Although Julie Foudy was a littel awkward at halftime of the LAG-SJ game) Fun, entertaining games; good atmosphere; good production. ESPN was a winner tonight.

    complaints:
-the song for the opening montage was kinda gay, my roommate loved it, and he's not into soccer, so maybe it worked, i dunno, i don't do the whole emo-punk-pop crap
-julie foudy sucks, she's not hot either, what about rachel nichols? where was heather mitts? and ms. mitts has great delivery too, and she's not awkward like foudy
-glenn davis has a very annoying voice, i think tommy smyth with even dave o'brien might have worked better last night
-espn could use christopher sullivan, now that would be a coup for espn production, it makes fsc games worth watching
-there's a gap between the scoreboard and the top of the screen, kinda annoying, they should move it up to fill the gap

    good things:
-john harkes, i will miss him for the dcu telecasts here locally, but kudos for making bank with espn
    -chicago fire fans
-camera work was perfect, nothing bad to say about it
    -tommy smyth was excellent
-cutting to full screen of stats during goal kicks was not overdone, its a good time during the lull in play, and they picked their times carefully
-the dick's commercial with benny olsen
    -the espn primetime thursday commercial
-rob stone in studio pregame show, apparently this will be year long
-shelly smith was not on my tv

    overall, i loved it

You want Dave O'Brien and Christopher Sullivan. DOB knows nothing about soccer and Sullivan tries too hard to sound like he knows everything.

    Do you listen during games?

to be honest, I have to agree... announcers weren't overly talkative, cameras pretty much stayed focused on the action, no stupid "Beckham cam," no "30 at 30 update" (in the past, they always seemed to happen when a team was threatening to score!), no cutaways to the sideline reporters... Looks like ESPN is putting some effort into this, and they're actually listening to feedback. Overall, a really good production.

Re: WTF? (ESPN2 Primetime Thursday Complaints thread)

I totally agree on the not yelling at the announcers - first time in a long time for me as well.

Re Foudy's halftime...thing. Several have already mentioned it, but apparently I was out of the room and completely missed it. To be honest, I don't care for Foudy. And I still don't understand how she got picked to be the token female ex WC soccer player for ESPN. However, if she's going to be the only thing to complain about - it ain't that bad.

Now. She and Rob Stone together make me cringe because I know something silly or stupid is going to be said.......but that's always a good time to run to the kitchen.

Last night, for maybe the first time, ESPN let the game be the story, instead of trying to make the announcers or the gadgets or some other sideshow the center of attention. I hope this was a directive from the producers, and not just a coincidence.

I know this is a complaints thread, but...

If people actually did enjoy the production (as I did) , it is probably a good idea to write ESPN to actually praise the elements that you thought they improved upon. Some positive feedback probably would not hurt and encourage them to listen to future constructive criticism.

Great idea. Done and done. There is a 500-character feedback form you can complete quick and easy on the website.

me too. i almost choked on my beer.

i think ESPN is getting appreciably better each season, and often from game to game.

on the HD broadcast though, i do wish they'd move the bar at the top with the score and the clock, all the way to the top, and shrink it a bit, so it doesn't interrupt the field view as much.

I think the ESPN commentators could learn some things from max bretos and christopher sullvian. Such as:

    1) how to over pronounce players names. (Bretos)
    2) saying the word "certainly" a whole lot. (Bretos)
    3) saying "good ball" and "stay compact in the middle". (sullivan)

All the ESPN and FSC commentators suck, but I love the game so I guess I will just have to deal with it.

I actually thought the coverage was very good. I really like the pregame show (I didnt remember that from last year). Could not remember it, but like how it focused soley on soccer.

I know I am in the minority but i love Symth (every league needs its 'madden' commentator)!

I agree with a previous post--WHAT WAS THE POINT OF THE AXIS CAM. Everytime they used it i didnt quite get it. I wish is wasnt just for still pics and maybe it would have been better. All-in-all it felt that ESPN gave the MLS a fair product.

maybe this 'axis cam' is ESPN's/MLS's version of the NHL glowing puck.

and like the glowing puck, goes the way of the dodo.

ESPN producers know that they're doing a good job when they don't have any letters/emails to answer.

It seemed like someone told her that she was supposed to cover that halftime segment about five seconds before she went on the air. That's probably the worst I've seen of her.

Thats the one thing I don't get is the attitude against FSC commentators. No they don't exactly have the treble commentator voices you would hear in other major sports but they both love the game and call it with enthusiasm and try and make the game exciting. I have no problem with either of them.

ESPN can suck, but overall I thought it was a great MLS Thursday with solid coverage. The atmospheres were very solid and ESPN helped to show that. Anyone honestly think any other telivision providors could do a better job? To me I don't think so. Deep down I have always wanted to see what CBS could do with telivising games because of how well they do it with football and basketball, but I don't think Fox or NBC could do a better job. CBS just always stays true to sport, instead of the flair that Fox and ESPN seem to do. ESPN has improved with their soccer coverage in the past few years, and I really do think it has a chance to really help the MLS.

My only complaint is the commercials got so repetitive (what did they show, a total of 4 different commercials the entire 4 and a half hours?) and my EuroSnob friends came in to tell me I was an idiot for watching MLS.

Ok my main question is this. Why don't we have more day MLS games? That way after I'm done watching EPL on a Saturday it would transition very nicely into an MLS match. Or maybe the powers that be want about a 6 hour gap between games so you sort of forget what you were watching and can't comparing the two leagues back to back..Joking

I understand during the summer there are heat issues but right now I wouldn't mind being able to catch a 1PM game on FSC or ESPN. You would probley get more of the "eurosnobs" who just watched the Newcastle vs Reading game who sticking around and checking out the MLS.

Except during the summer there are no Newcastle/Reading fixtures.....And yes, the heat is at times unbearable for the players to play in which leads to dull action on the pitch. Not exactly a winning formula for increased ratings and exposure.
